But by extension, it doesn;t make sense to start keeping people from saying potentially 'offensive' things about Hinduism. What can classify as 'offensive'? Where do you draw the line? Are we not behaving like Islamicists who cry 'Islamophobia' (a very poorly defined word) everytime their belief system get criticized? My personal experience with Ramayana is that it never contains anything that our modern-day illiterate Indians/parents teach us. Some compare it even to Illyad of Homar. I say it's far far away from that. They compare it to the abduction of a woman and how it led to war. Ramayana has a beautiful love story of a man who loves his wife at the same time he keeps his responsibilities to society and values such as the promise of his father first before the family or personal matters. Then the woman is one who is not bound by any rules or society and loves a man to the bottom of her heart. The contradiction of two hearts is beautifully presented. Then the love of brothers, the sacrifice of friends and strangers alike, the goodness and the conflict of hearts of villains such as Kumbhkarna, ..its an epic! Ramayana has a beautiful description of thousands of plants and herbs that are consistent and still part of the Indian geography. The beauty is that it never tells you to follow Raam or Lakshman, it presents the conflicts and hardship of people who keep their ideals and values and keep up to live that when adversities present. The spiritual seekers will find more than these, the wisdom of Hindu philosophy of living life honestly and doing even (anything regarded by society as)sin (which takes you to hell or undesirable for you) if your sacrifice benefits society! Ram is a God (no equal term in English to the ones in Sanskrit) because he blames none in any adversities, he cries like a baby when his love was abducted but never plays any revenge politics to get back, whatever happened good or bad he says he is the Atman, not the body. Ravana may be presented as a villain in Amar Chithra Kadhas and TV Serials but Ravana is also a character to learn from, who represents everyone who wants to own everything that is beautiful but use his power to own it. Ravana is not hated in Ramayana, but he is the character you mostly play in your life. Jai Sri Ram!

I think distinction needs to be made.
1. What Audrey Truschke tweeted was not heavily biased but provably wrong. People are right to criticise her and debunk her statements.
2. But by extension, it doesn;t make sense to start keeping people from saying potentially 'offensive' things about Hinduism. What can classify as 'offensive'? Where do you draw the line? Are we not behaving like Islamicists who cry 'Islamophobia' (a very poorly defined word) everytime their belief system get criticized? Do we want to eventually start playing the same 'Don't hurt my feelings...or else' game as them?
Part of what 'Hinduism' great is that it can accomodate and sometimes shrug off scrutiny and that's what makes it a diverse and inclusive ecosystem of a belief.

Good rebuttal. Such incidents wouldn't happen if Hindus united and had a strong lobby to institute prestigious chairs at these universities where insiders to the Hindu tradition would be appointed as professors. Right now, it's all dominated by "scholars" who don't know Sanskrit or other classical Indian languages, have not read a single Hindu text in the original, and only reflect off of each other in their own ecosystem. I think Rajiv Malhotra has mentioned this repeatedly. For every other culture, the academics are sympathetic to it and "insiders". Only Hinduism's academics in the west are full of Hinduphobia and contempt resulting from complete ignorance of primary sources from the tradition itself. Instead all these academics spew theories constructed outside the social ecosystem of India to explain Hinduism.

My personal experience with Ramayana is that it never contains anything that our modern-day illiterate Indians/parents teach us. Some compare it even to Illyad of Homar. I say it's far far away from that. They compare it to the abduction of a woman and how it led to war. Ramayana has a beautiful love story of a man who loves his wife at the same time he keeps his responsibilities to society and values such as the promise of his father first before the family or personal matters. Then the woman is one who is not bound by any rules or society and loves a man to the bottom of her heart. The contradiction of two hearts is beautifully presented. Then the love of brothers, the sacrifice of friends and strangers alike, the goodness and the conflict of hearts of villains such as Kumbhkarna, ..its an epic! Ramayana has a beautiful description of thousands of plants and herbs that are consistent and still part of the Indian geography. The beauty is that it never tells you to follow Raam or Lakshman, it presents the conflicts and hardship of people who keep their ideals and values and keep up to live that when adversities present. The spiritual seekers will find more than these, the wisdom of Hindu philosophy of living life honestly and doing even (anything regarded by society as)sin (which takes you to hell or undesirable for you) if your sacrifice benefits society! Ram is a God (no equal term in English to the ones in Sanskrit) because he blames none in any adversities, he cries like a baby when his love was abducted but never plays any revenge politics to get back, whatever happened good or bad he says he is the Atman, not the body. Ravana may be presented as a villain in Amar Chithra Kadhas and TV Serials but Ravana is also a character to learn from, who represents everyone who wants to own everything that is beautiful but use his power to own it. Ravana is not hated in Ramayana, but he is the character you mostly play in your life. Jai Sri Ram!

Good video Shawn. You have a fair balanced way of putting across your point. But Hinduism is being denigrated. More accurately Dharma is being denigrated. Dharma is higher than Hinduism as Dharma is only true law of the universe. It is the Kal yug and this is the evidence. Everything good in every religion and society structure is being denigrated.
Dharma says women are equal to men and more that mother is highest of all. But across India and the world look how we act.

To understand Hinduism, one must start from the 3 eternal entities in this universe viz God, Souls and Matter. Each of these 3 entities are uncreated and eternal, without beginning and without ending. God is the infinite universal, superintelligent, superconsciousness (universal soul) who creates the universe from matter because of his love for the souls to have a material medium to realize him.. Creation is from out of his superconsciousness. Souls are individual intelligent consciousness who take on different material bodies to experience matter and ultimately realize the impermanence of matter and seek the permanence of merging their soul with his superconsciousness. In Hinduism, one can worship God as a 'person' with form or without form, simply as consciousness.. Since all of creation emanated from God, hence truly speaking, there are many manifestations of God according to our experience and limited perception. One to many and ultimately many to one.
