  • In this video i Install the Barnes 4WD, Seven Slot Customs bolt in skid plate upgrade for you Jeep Wrangler TJ. This fits any TJ 1997-2006 Automatic or Manual. This thing is a huge upgrade compared to the weak stamped cross member skid plate that came from the factory. Depending on the Year of your TJ this will be a high clearance skid plate "tummy tuck" and give you 1" or more of extra ground clearance. Stay tuned for more videos on this build. Hoping to stretch the Jeep to a 100" wheel base!

    I put this skid plate on my 2001 TJ, 4.0L with NV3550 manual trans. fit perfectly. The only thing I did different was I drilled through the nut serts all the way through the top of the frame. ran long bolts from the skid plate to the top of the frame with nylock nuts and washers. I had a couple of nut serts that the threads were in rough shape. This set up, I find, is far more secure than the nut serts.

    • @MuddyBeards4X4
      @MuddyBeards4X4  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good to hear, those nut serts are definitely a weak point. I wouldn’t trust them, that’s why I welded them👊🏻

      @@MuddyBeards4X4 Weak point, how? How many TJ 's have you saw that the nutserts fail to keep that TC skid plate where it should be?

    That skid plate looks great man. I also did not know they clocked the t-cases differently. Cant wait to see the stretch work.

    I swapped a ax15 out of a cherokee into a tj. In my research I found I needed to swap the bell housing and tail housing. But I had one out of both sitting there to look at.

  • @w1.0
    @w1.0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Since you raised your motor mounts that dropped your transfer case and is the problem in my mind probably stock transfer case

    • @MuddyBeards4X4
      @MuddyBeards4X4  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s what I originally thought, but the issue is 100% that my transmission is a AX15 from a Cherokee and the output housing is different than the TJ one.👍🏻

      Thats crazy that the engineers would clock those different gotta love em!!!! At least it didnt cost ya a crazy amount to fix!!!

      @MuddyBeards4X4  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, I can’t think of a reason why they did it, lol. Oh well, like you said at least it as only $40 to fix it, but it put me behind a few weeks on the project

    Only one I can find is the Barnes one and I'd much rather have a star with 7 logo over the Barnes name stamped out of it.

      They are the exact same skid plates, but they don’t have the 7 slot “brand” anymore.

    I was stoked to hear you explain the Cherokee ax15 issue. I am installing a 4.2l (258) in my 87 yj and have been running into walls. Where did you get the clocking ring and did you have issues finding the correct tranny mount for it. I had the 2.5 inline 4 w/ Peugeot POS tranny that blew a hole in the side, hence the upgrade. Any info greatly appreciated.

    • @MuddyBeards4X4
      @MuddyBeards4X4  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The clocking ring I got on eBay. I believe it was $42. I am not familiar with the YJ trans mount but in the Tj it is a separate piece so I used the factory mount with no issues. Good luck👊🏻

      I stumbled on it in 2015. Its self etching. Prevents rust. Chemical resistant. Drys really fast. Only down side its $8 a can at vatozone.
      Anything I take off my rig, I paint with vht wheel paint. Makes power washing down the road a breeze. No longer have to worry about clay stains. Road grim comes right off

    Mine possibly must have had the tcase clocked already, as it has a full belly tuck skid about 2 times the size and it sits flush with the frame rails... I do like the shock and coil relocation tho to get longer shocks in, how much extra droop did u gain at the rear buddy? Subscribed and keep up the great vids👌🇺🇸

    • @MuddyBeards4X4
      @MuddyBeards4X4  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks👊🏻 they must have done something to do a flat skid plate for sure. And I don’t remember how much it gave me, but I was able to run and maybe 5-7” longer shock. But you have to be careful not to get so much droop that it binds up your pinion yoke, because it will break.

    Thanks for the review, have been eyeballing that. I have an 01 with a 1"BL but I swapped a 241 in so I dont have a lot of room for a tuck. Where is that first 4wheeling clip? Looks kinda like Vantage or somewhere on the east side?

    • @MuddyBeards4X4
      @MuddyBeards4X4  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice, jealous of that 4:1. That is Johnson valley, king of the hammers last February. I would try it out and see if it fits, it should. If not that $40 clocking ring would fix it.

    So why not flat bottom it now? seems like a good time to do that? and good luck man! i triangulated my rear axle and long armed it about 1.5 years ago now! best thing i could have done! its awesome :D Im getting starting to fab the parts to make a flat bottom skid. only reason why i am asking. kind of want to watch some one else do it first LOL

      Lol, I still have the stock 231 which I plan on upgrading next year so my original plan was to install a easy bolt in upgrade to hold me over until my tcase swap, but that didn’t really work out for me👊🏻

    Do you have to run the body lift? I can’t find any info on their website.

    • @MuddyBeards4X4
      @MuddyBeards4X4  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No body lift required, it is basically just a beefy version of a stock skid plate. Same drop as the factory one.

    How do you tell the difference between a xj and tj ax15?

    • @MrMrsregor
      @MrMrsregor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      to my knowledge, the only difference would be the 6 holes for mounting the transfer case. if you try to put an xj ax15 into a tj, the transfer case will hang down too low. you can re-drill the 6 holes and re-clock transfer case to make it fit.
      so, i guess the only way to tell what jeep the ax15 came from, is to look at where the holes are located on the transmission where the transfer case bolts to.
      it also was used in some dodge Dakota trucks, jeep MJ, and ZJ (but only the 1993 inline 6)

    • @MuddyBeards4X4
      @MuddyBeards4X4  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not sure the question? There was no problem with the skid plate. My Jeep had a transmission from a cherokee which is what messed everything up
