    Hi Russ you aren't doing anything wrong on that 656 when that guy said take the valve cover off with the fuel tank on it take the fuel tank off then you will have alot more room to work on it with fuel tank off well you will have plenty of room to see everything clearly when you work on it

      Parts or questions? For questions you might want to google. For parts All States Ag, Shoup or Steiner.

    Glad you are feeling better. Lot of memories in that old sputter start. Speaking of memories...and the wick bar on the front. I remember a day, when it was in use on this tractor, Bobby was out in the field across from the end of your driveway. I was with Gran Gran (our grand father for those of you who don't know and are reading this) and we heard a sudden rev of the engine and an abrupt silence. We drove over to find Bobby had run the front tire into a massive hole and couldn't back out. We took a log chain and tied it from the side of a flatbed truck to a loop around and through through those rear spoke wheels on the back. He was able to use that as leverage to pull himself out of the hole. It's a wonder he didn't break the front axle off...but then again, they made tractors different back then. The wick bar on the tractor would pivot back to the sides for transport. There were two bars and they lived in the bottom of the grain barn for decades. If you don't find the original weight bar...you may consider using the old yellow brackets as a base for a new one. Just don't ask me to describe the way they would use a hill to kick start it when it had a dead battery.

    Thats the torque amp lever...NOT FOWARD OR REVERSE....the gear selector is on the right side....we own a 1970 656 diesel

    • @Thomasfarmstn
      @Thomasfarmstn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No TA on this one. My grandfather bought it new in 66. That is a forward/ reverse lever on this particular one. It was built from the factory to mount a cotton picker on it. Google tractor mounted cotton pickers. They run with the tractor in reverse. I’ve been around Farmalls and IH tractors all my life. I do know when you pull back on a TA it doesn’t go backwards like this one. Thanks for watching.

    I have worked on a 460 and a 560 and that gas tank is a pain. We would take out the 4 bolts that bolt it down to the clutch housing and put a block in there to get it up to work on the motor. Is this tractor a hydro?

  • @piercismpropagandanetwork9846
    @piercismpropagandanetwork9846 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That forward reverser is a VERY rare option on a 656 and it seems to be a factory fender delete or had clam shell fenders since the lights are mounted on the side of the hood that way. I’m restoring a early model 656 as well it has the aftermarket Swartz front axle like on yours as well as it’s a diesel. Mines just a regular 656 with the Torque amplifier rather than the forward reverser. Ours came from Mississippi and has certainly seen better days. You should post some pictures of it on the Red Power Forum as many people would like to see it and may be able to help you with anything.

    Thats the difference in a 282 and a 414. 282 was one of the hardest starting IH engines and the 400 series were the best. I remember using wick bars, I kinda remember that one on that 656. Usually had Roundup in them.
