Sterling does what Martinelli doesn’t. Martinelli needs open space and runs in straight lines, teams have figured him out. Saka beats opponents from a stop ball when their feet are flat. Sterling does what robben would do, he dribbles at just the right pace to move laterally if need to burst when space opens up and he runs AT defenders. He might cook up at Arsenal, maybe even more than saka does tbh

People don't realise if Sterling was still at City in that perfect system he'd still be scoring 10 + goals a season. It's all about what these brilliant clubs such as City and now Arsenal allow their players to express themselves in their organised possession play. Sterling will get 15 + goal contributions for Arsenal
These clubs have a style of play and maintain 55%+ possession. They’ll rotate players. Players will remain fresh and uninjured. No one has to be selfish because there will be enough goals. Sterling will bang in 10+ easily.

As back up for Saka, and if the cost is not high it’s a good gamble. FA Cup starts and Carabao Cup and possibly Champions League it allows for rotation which Arsenal must be more proactive with to avoid the end of season exhaustion that has cost them recently.

Sterling can do what Trossard does and what Martinelli does while also providing a dynamic Saka does not which is thriving in 1 v 1 situations. Arsenal can literally decide to play Martinelli on the left and Sterling on the right and go for absolute pace on both flanks stretching the pitch a dynamic we haven't had in a while.

But he will retain some transfer value rather than not playing at all, and he’ll still have 2 years left when he comes back. Chelsea will still ‘save’ 8 million a year on the accounts.
I think the ownership is also happy to take the loss because they signed Sterling in the window where they had no recruitment team in place. I think they’re viewing that summer 2022 window as a write off.

On paper it's a great signing. Sterling i's a serial winner and comes with bags of experience of the league. He doesn't need to relocate from his current accommodation. He knows Arteta, played with Jesus, Zinchenko, Havertz, Saka, Jorginho and Rice before. Provides excellent cover throughout the front line. He's on loan with part of his fee paid by Chelsea and he has something to prove. What's not to like about this deal?

Lets not be a bunch of whingers for no reason. We need to look at the numbers. I guarantee that Chels are covering 150k of Raheems weekly salary. So, our exposure may be 150k per week. Sterling did 10 goals and 8 assists in (2771 minutes played) 43 games last season. That equates to 1 goal contribution every 154 minutes which is a contribution about every 1.71 matches. Decent enough numbers for a back up. He is never going to be our number 1, but he can fulfil a role.
