    I'm thinking of using your plans in the near future to build my first kart. Everything seemed to go smoothly up until I got to this brake rod section. In the plans, I see the brake rod guide tab (1/4 " DIA) and then one of the eyelets (3/8" DIA). Next, I see another eyelet which I'm assuming is the "front eyelet" at 1/4" DIA but it looks like the rod doesn't go through it (through the diameter that was pre-drilled out)? The diagram shows the rod touching the side of this front eyelet and the instructions at the top says, "...and weld the eyelets to the rod..."
    I'm really not sure where to put these eyelets. Also, what exactly are you welding at 3:31-3:37 of this video? I know you're at the front at the brake pedal, but I can't see what specific spot you're welding the rod to on the brake pedal.

    • @KartFab
      @KartFab  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No rod is welded to brake pedal, you run a bolt through brake pedal and eyelet. Space it out with nuts. Use threadlocker.

      Hydraulic are the best, but kind of expensive. Brake band or mechanical disc will work well enough and cost 1/2 to 1/5th of the price. If money is no option, hydraulic is the way to go.

      You have tons of options depending on how much you're willing to spend, You can go disc brakes with hydraulics,
      You can use mechanical cable on drum or disc,
      He's building a traditional old school go kart, the rod is cheap and easy to buy and build,
      It also allows you to deliver a lot of power from your foot without cables stretching and hydraulics needing service, Cheap and reliable.

      +Tony Gonzalez actually that's not all that bad with 60t and only 13" tires.... It could be better. Just make sure you don't start/stop constantly, or try to climb hills with it. You will feel the clutch slip, then fully engage. You want the clutch either disengaged at idle, or fully engaged. The more time it slips, the more smoking and heat you get.

    I have an old Carter Super Wheels Go-Cart. 5HP B&S Engine. Pretty Basic. Getting it refreshed for grandkids. I don't see a provision for a return spring as you show in the kit. Not elsewhere in the rest of the system that I see. Is that normal?

    • @KartFab

      I found out no spring on brakes for this Carter cart. Additionally, we can't find a diagram of linkage for the gas pedal hooks up. This is an older 5hp B&S engine with horizontal shaft. It runs and the governor linkage works. nut the gas pedal doesn't increase engine speed. Only # on engine is 302023200019110506. No manual throttle where the choke one is.

    Is there a way to make the brake band clamp tighter? because mine takes a while to stop my go kart.

    • @KartFab
      @KartFab  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If i step on my brakes hard, it locks up the wheels. The problem could be a number of things. Old brake band loses friction, improperly adjusted band, bad linkages (are your linkages like mine on the go kart? If not, they could be affecting it). Also, your brake pedal applies leverage, you can put the linkage for the brake pedal lower for more leverage, or higher for more travel. You can have the right leverage, but if the band isnt adjusted correctly, you may need more travel for it to engage.

      +djm227 the spacer is for the steering shaft. It doesn't matter how thick it is maybe 16-11 gauge. I forget what the fender washer is for but it may be for the steering column where the steering wheel bolts to it.

    I got the clutch and sprocket today.. I was rideing on a flat surface testing the go kart.. without brakes so I drove it ran smooth till I got to a dead stop.. then it started smoking... it's a 12 teeth clutch tires from a ride lawnmower 8' maybe regular sprocket .. I don't know how to put oil I'm a newbie

    • @KartFab
      @KartFab  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tony Gonzalez 8"? Are you just making that up? There is a bushing around the clutch kind of where the teeth are but next to the engine shaft. You just put a few drops of it on there every now and again. Smoking clutch could also mean you have the hearing wrong. Get on a "go kart speed calculator" site to see what your top speed at 3600 RPM is. Most yard karts should go around 25 mph or less. If it is geared to a high speed, you will eventually burn out the clutch from the heat as it is trying to engage all the time.

    • @Any_Halfs

    I'm noticing that the clutch engages as I start turning the choke off (when the vehicle is sitting on my workbench) without hitting the gas pedal. When it's down on the ground, the clutch engages without me hitting the gas pedal but only when the choke is completely off. Any ideas on what could be causing this and how to fix?

    • @KartFab
      @KartFab  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ok now you need to really pay attention. The idle speed screw that is black will COMPLETELY CLOSE the throttle if you back it out far enough. E.G. your engine will not run at all if you adjust it low enough. Air makes your engine run, if it has no air, it will not run, period. So go back to the idle screw on top of the carb, and back it out until you see the top plastic part of the throttle butterfly touch the metal part of the carb, this is in the fully closed position and your engine will not run AT ALL in this position, when you screw the black plastic screw in from here, your engine will idle slowly, and if you keep screwing the screw in, the engine will idle higher and higher because the throttle butterfly is opening more and more. You need to be 100% sure that you are adjusting this properly. If you are certain that you have the tthrottle butterfly 100% closed (black screw all the way backed out, then you need to look at other sources of air. So there are two other thoughts coming to mind here. 1) your screw is adjusted, but your throttle return spring is not pushing the butterfly closed (this only happens when the engine is running btw). If your throttle isnt returning, it could be that the 10mm friction nut that the throttle lever pivots on is not backed out far enough, or you have a weak return spring. If the nut allows the throttle lever to freely pivot (i like it very loose) you can then look at the return mechanism. If it is weak, then you can drill a small hole in the top of the throttle lever (the one you can grab with your hand) and get a small stretchy spring and attach it to the end of that lever and then to your pull start shroud so this spring will keep the throttle on the turtle side of things easier. Ok lost yet? Hope not. Second thought coming to mind is that you may have a vacuum leak (e.g. air is getting into the engine from a leak somewhere) a vacuum leak is caused by a crack or bad gasket, or gasket installed backwards. I only see these types of leaks when people start jacking with the engine pulling the carb off and rip a gasket or forget to install it correctly so it is not sealing. So with that said. I can pretty much gurantee that the engine is getting AIR and you are not able to cut off the air with whatever you are doing. If an engine doesnt have air, it doesnt matter what your choke is set on, it WILL NOT OVER REV. IT WILL NOT IDLE. It will not run. You control that air through good gaskets and seals, and by the throttle butterfly. The throttle butterfly gets held closed by the governor only when the engine is running. The idle idjustment screw on top of the carburetor bypasses the force the governor is applying to close the throttle butterfly, so the throttle is cracked open just enough to allow the engine to idle correctly. So............ If you really tried that, then you need to try it again. Get that engine to BARELY RUN at a LOW idle speed. On top of all of this, if you run the enging with half choke, it is making the engine's fuel mixture extremely rich, which will underpower the engine SIGNIFICANTLY, which will ruin the force the engine has to apply to the clutch, so the clutch will be constantly slipping. The clutch needs to slip a little bit when you first start out, then lock up when you get higher up in the rpm range. If it is constantly slipping, it will burn up, and possibly anneal the metal and ruin the clutch (typically by detensioning the springs from heat build up). A smoking clutch is also a sign of bad gearing. you want a 6:1 gear ratio typically with up to 15" tires. If you are trying to climb a hill it may smoke as well, but that is because the clutch is slipping and you cant climb super steep hills with a standard centrifugal clutch. So gear ratio, and low hp/low rpm can cause clutch to slip. Good luck. Hope this helps. Check the obvious stuff first. If your engine wont run without the choke on, you should CLEAN YOUR CARBURETOR, including removing the pilot jet, main jet, emulsion tube, and using carb cleaner. You should NEVER run your engine on partial choke EVER. It should only be started on choke, and when it warms up a bit (usually after a few seconds), you can take the choke off, let it warm up a bit more, then drive it.

    • @wgpubs
      @wgpubs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      SOLVED: It looks like it was a combination of the 10mm friction nut not being loose enough and also the throttle cable being too tight.
      Everything works fine except now chain comes off because my clutch slips down from where it is mounted on the engine. I did notice anything locking the clutch in place when I unpacked the engine and now I can just slide it off/on the engine. Is there something I need to do to lock it into place?
      And thanks for your patience :)

    • @KartFab
      @KartFab  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      glad to see you got it fixed. I try to be thorough in my response so that you get all your options covered. So to answer your chain problem question. YES you need to have something locking the clutch into place. Some clutches have a set screw that you use an allen wrench to tighten against the engine shaft. The clutch should have a key and keyway that keeps it from spinning. But as far as keeping the clutch on the engine shaft, you need to use a washer and a bolt that has threadlocker on it to keep it from slipping off the end of the shaft. Some clutches (like race clutches) need a small amount of end play, but most others will require maybe some washers if the shaft is longer than the clutch to keep it all fixed into place.

      line it up and put a cotter pin through the pivot point to hold the brake band on.

      Jack up the rear of the kart and start it. It might be an engaged clutch or torque converter, or throttle is stuck open or idle adjustment is too high.

      other wheels dont need it. one wheel brake is all it needs. If you have a live axle go kart, then you use one brake for both wheels. This is for a 1 wheel drive go kart.
