    Great video John. To all of you out there who dream of doing something like this, take your opportunity to summit a mountain of your choice while you can. It doesn't have to be Denali or Everest. There are many wonderful experiences to be had and at almost any budget. The view from a mountain top above the clouds is an experience that every capable person should try to have at least once in their life. I've done many, but never one of the world's classic summits. There was a time when I wanted to and probably could have done a trip to Everest and I always thought I would "do it later" when finances were better. That time never came and now I missed my chance in this lifetime. Just a few years ago I took my son to ski in Steamboat. The elevation at just 10,500 ft kicked my butt. The same trip 28 years ago to the same mountain did not phase me one bit. Take your opportunities now while you can.

      ***** This was a great comment! However, I would urge you not to quit if it's really your dream; I was with a 63 year old man at C2 on Everest. And he was blind in one eye! So don't let age be a factor. Cheers!

      @TaxationIsTheft69420 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Exactly. Don't give up. Age is in your head. Will it be harder? Yes. But can you do it? Absolutely. You make your own destiny. It's not over until you're gone.

      The thing with mountaineering and adventuring generally speaking is just dont wait it out. Hiking or going in the bush is just great aswell! Any experience can be a good one and you can do trips on a really low budget really.

    came here out of intrest in the mountain. just finished a cruise to alaska where we took a sea plane up the glacier and flew around. weather was good and we were able to get a good glimps of the summit for a good ten minutes before we had to turn around. the pilot told us we were flying right above the base camp area and i remember thinking we were at a pretty high altitude (i have a fear of heights) and still looking up at the summit and it was still so much higher then we were. was an experience ill always remember. cant imagion climbing it, but the video was really well done and just wanted to thank you for sharing it with the world. i really enjoyed watching it.

    Thank you for such a detailed and honest account of this epic adventure. I did this same route in ‘96 and just re-lived once again all those memories and feelings thanks to you. We got pinned down at 16’ at the top of the fixed lines for 3 nights with 100mph sustained winds. By the time we got to 17’ we were toast. Summit day was in whiteout and the summit ridge was in a lenticular. We made it but spent a night at 17’ and 14’ Before the long slog back to the strip. I can’t believe you were pushed straight through!! Thank you for letting me re-live the adventure!

    John, this is really fabulous. Thank you. I am still stunned at the ending. The only negative vibes came at the end where you commented on the lack of support from the guides. Bobby - Fair enough. I didn't have a good experience with the head guide on this climb and wanted to leave that out of this video as much as possible. It was a personality clash which happens on mountains. Probably just as much my fault as anyone's. Contrary to what I said here, I have gone guided following this climb and have had wonderful experiences with every company since.

    Beautiful video! Thank you for capturing so much footage - I know it takes way more effort and thought than most are aware. I did this exact route in 1996, but we were pinned down for 3 nights in a snow cave at the top of the fixed lines. 100mph sustained winds made for some real excitement! From that point onward was whiteout so I love watching the details of your footage. My summit photo is pure white. We never saw a thing. Congrats!! And I loved hearing your commentary of being overwhelmed every moment by the splendor - it's spectacular in every way.

      +Gage Gillespie We May see each other up on the Mountain then. Good luck in your training for it. I am doing Rainier maybe next year or early 2017, and then save up for and train harder for Denali in 2018. I will be 46 years old then.

    • @blueomni30
      @blueomni30 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kevin Stone Rainier is, like most mountains, largely about the mindset. Of course you need the technical skills and so, but moving up disappointment cleaver makes you realize it earned the name for a reason. One foot in front of the other and you'll make it! Good luck!

    • @blueomni30
      @blueomni30 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would agree and argue that you need to practice, not only read, glacier rescue until you know it by heart. At no point did I imply otherwise, hence my caveat that you you need the technical skills. My point was simply that having the technical skills to do it doesn't ensure you will. Mind over matter plays a large role, as it does in every climb or adventure.

    • @kevinstone9638
      @kevinstone9638 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +blueomni30 Thanks for the information, I hope to climb Mt. Rainier either this year or next. I live in West Virginia and do a lot of really steep climbing and have 25 years as a high angle rescue firefighter working with ropes and rappelling long distances.

      @camranbaird7160 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tim Brooks Yip it's nearly the same hight the higher you are thw quicker the air gets thinner and the location of everest won't help

    Very well said Sir. The Majestic & Mighty Mt Denali AKA Mt.Mckinley standing very tall above everything around it at 20320 feet from sea level and 18000 feet from its base till the top of the summit is definitely taller than Mt Everest as you rightly mentioned . Thanks specially for this information. The vdo is incredible and mesmerizing. Thanks 👍❤

    John thanks so much for logging this and sharing. Great work! Planning a trip myself and was planning on going with a guide but you seemed to not like it - any more thoughts on that for those on the fence? Thanks again!

    • @JohnBeede
      @JohnBeede  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Austen - I actually do recommend a guide service, especially if you haven't been to the mountain (or comparable) previously. It's all about the guides as people and how you mesh. Therefore, don't base it on the company so much as on the specific guide. I can, however, say that I've had wonderful experiences with IMG.
