  • In this week's woodland macro photography outing I photograph a thing I can only describe as a nubbit, some things that look like eggs from an alien creature, and a beautiful piece of bracken. So no mushrooms this week. I know, I know, no mushrooms, but I'm trying to move away from being a 'mushroom guy', what ever that is. Anyway, a change is as good as a rest, isn't it? Enjoy!

Only just found your channel and I’m absolutely loving it. You make macro photography look achievable so will be getting a macro lens to go with my OM1 mk2 camera. Any advice on lighting to purchase for field work.

Brilliant, glad you're enjoying it! Yes, it's totally achievable - if I can do it, anyone can. There's no special secrets, at least none that I know of! Lighting-wise, I'm using a NanLite Pavotube and an Aputure MC (both great options) , but there are loads of other options. I've just bought a SmallRig P96L (arrived today, in fact!) which I'll be trying out in a week or two.

Thanks for the shooting technique « display peaking stacking image », I have a Z6II and I never see this fonction 🧐…I have to try this soon…you take 100 shots and moore but you only used 8…10..14…How do you choose them ? I use Affinity 2 for my focus stack , and you ? It would be interesting to see your process. I hope you understand my english….because I think m’y english is as « spécial » as your breakfasts 🤣🤣🤣 . Thank you So much ! Joëlle from BELGIUM.

Hi Joëlle in Belgium! Unfortunately I don’t think the Z6II has the peaking stack image function, which I didn’t realise when I made the video. It seems strange that Nikon took it away - I don’t think it’s on the Z7II or Z6III either. Out of the 100 (or however many) images, I delete everything in front of the closest image I want to use, then delete everything behind the furthest image I want to use. This might leave me with, say, 60 images. I then pick every third or fourth image and stack them. If there are any gaps then I go back and choose maybe every second image and do the stack again. I try to stack the minimum number of images possible, as this reduces the amount of retouching I need to do later. I’m currently using Helicon Focus for stacking, as I find it better at doing large stacks than Photoshop. I am planning to make a video showing the process in detail - that will be in a week when it rains too much to go out!

In fact, m’y Z6II don’t have the peaking stack function ☹️😢. I try this afternoon to make some focus stack with very small wild flower in my garden, it wasn’t easy because it was a bit windy and some horseflies attacked me 😖. I apply your method and I think I’m making somme progress . Thank you ! Joëlle
