But nearly two decades after The Black and White Minstrels had been taken off the air (in 1978, the same year that Rock Against Racism began). Fourteen years after the Brixton Riots and the Scarman Report. Two years after Stephen Lawrence was stabbed to death. Baddiel is rightly sensitive to antisemitic abuse both on and off the terraces. Unfortunately, this ridicule and depiction caused Lee to suffer racial abuse on the field (which Baddiel doesn't mention in his book). That doesn't mean Baddiel should be solely hung out to dry. It ironically exemplifies the jewish dilemma about assimilation - how much is too much? Should jews throw their lot in with other groups who suffer racism, or should they stand apart, under their own banner? By and large, this dilemma is a luxury not afforded other ethnic groups, whose visual appearance makes them immediately visible, and therefore immediately vulnerable to both the kind of systemic racism from birth most British jews are highly unlikely to experience, and the kind of treatment at the hands of people like Lady Hussy, or worse.

News flash...Its called a joke. He's got a pineapple on his head. He wasn't a prolific striker. AND his haircut was like a pineapple style. They took the piss out of lots of footballers. Race NEVER came into it.
I remember watching this as a kid and it never once made me think about his race. It was all about the fact that he was very badly out of form and kept missing and happened to have an unusual hairstyle on top of that. If you're doing an impression of someone and trying to look like them then of course you would change your skin tone to help with that, nothing to do with blackface. If it was a white guy (or a person of any race) playing so badly and had a look that stood out they would have mocked him too, i'm so sure of it. We've definitely gone backwards because none of these sketches made me think about race at the time and I think most people felt that way too. Nowadays i'm being forced to think about the race of people all the time which is sad. It was cruel but also totally normal behaviour from any footy fans at the time so not really a big deal and there's nothing to apologise about really. It couldn't happen now because we've lost so many of our freedoms to express ourselves but at the time it was fine. Maybe the only negative thing was that it went on for a bit too long and they could've moved onto someone else to joke about more quickly.
That's your experience. What about the experience of any black person watching it? Or not watching it but having to go to school the next day and having people do exactly the same thing to them because 'at the time it was fine'?
@@alfieb6711 I'm sure a lot of black people found it funny at the time too because it was about his hairstyle and how bad he was at football and nothing to do with his race. They probably wouldn't find it funny now because people like you make everyone obsessed with racism

How the fuck did this get passed? BBC screwed up here. David Baddiel knew better , no way he didn’t know this was racist. I’ve seen him since apologise to Jason Lee, 25 years later , I guess better late than never , but … fuck sake ..he should have apologise earlier , he shouldn’t have done it ..what was he thinking?
There was a culture of this kind of entertainment, I've seen hosts on they think it's all over abuse Chris Eubanks, Frank lebouf etc where it's uncomfortable to watch
If this is bullying then EVERY Spitting Image sketch ever made requires a personal apology to politicians. And Jason Lee DID miss an awful lot of goals. I'm impartial. I think football is shit and resent it taking up so much news and screen time. No apologies from me.
No one is expressly asserting that one race is superior to another race. This is parody, not racism. If this is an example of overt racism, each episode of the television program, In Living Color, contained incontrovertibly racist content.
This always made me feel uncomfortable and angry as a young black man and especially during a period when alt comedy (which Baddiel hailed from - not so much Skinner) was supposedly intelligent and anti 70s working class comedians (the majority of which was massively racist) I felt that these guys jumped on the 'ladism' - faux working class male (usually white) - movement when for one Baddiel absolutely was 'not' that and used that movement to peddle racist sketches which as Jason Lee said in his recent podcast with Baddiel not one member of production team said anything about. It was only Stuart Pearce (a team mate of Lee's at the time at forest) who directly complained about it to Baddiel. Someone posted 'this aged well' - this was the 90s not the 60s/70s - it ain't half hot mum, mind your language, love thy neighbour and alf garnett either had or were being consigned to history during this period, so it was never acceptable. But because it was alt university comedian young stars delivering it within the ladism culture it was accepted within 'mainstream audiences'. I think Skinner was just as responsible plus the show and I feel if viewers had a deeper understanding of the blackface culture within historic comedy tropes and why this was relentlessly performed - they would be surprised and shocked at the deeper historic connotations and reasons for doing this.
Is this any worse than the piss taking that goes on today. The Harry Maguire memes? Look what happened to Phil Jones career after everyone started laughing at his face?. The reason they get it is cos they are playing shite. Jason Lee wouldn’t have got this if he was banging goals in.

there was no racism in it at all the joke was being a terrible striker which the shoe was all about to take the piss out of football and footballers and themselves it wasn't target Jason Lee all the time other footballers were also subjected to bring ridiculed.
A white person dressing up with blackface isn't racist according to you then. Cool.
Can someone explain the joke that he couldn't get a letter in the mailbox?! Thanks...
He means because he misses a lot of chances in front of goal he would also miss the letter box.

This guy now lecturing us saying we don’t take anti semitism as seriously as anti black racism 🥴
Baddiel has to be the most thin skinned hyper sensitive "comedian" ever on British TV. The amount of whining he's done about people pointing out facts about a foreign Country the past few years...
... And this is what he was like back then.
I can't recall him doing any comedy since the last century. What is the point of him, why is he still a 'celebrity'? He just seems to crop up on my telly for spurious reasons when there is an international football tournament, its like he's living of the back of a football song that isn't even that popular anymore.
Watching this just makes me think he should be forgotten.

It was just comedy. People need to chill out. Too many snowflakes nowadays.

News flash...Its called a joke. He's got a pineapple on his head. He wasn't a prolific striker. AND his haircut was like a pineapple style. They took the piss out of lots of footballers. Race NEVER came into it.
How many times dos David have to apologise for this?
His recent book (and documentary) on anti-semitism by apparent 'progressives' is so brilliant.
Apparently only once; 25 years later
Many thanks for sharing!
Absolutely hilarious. Peak UK comedy this.
How is it racist to take the piss out of someone?
White players were equally ripped to pieces..... Jimmy Greaves, Iain Dowie, think they even did Ronaldo at one point.
I remember watching Fantasy Football and finding these sketches funny as a kid, which is why they annoy me so much now
Baddiel wot a chugger! 😏
@@evo5dave he’s definitely white so that’s why he found it funny
@@alfieb6711 I'm sure a lot of black people found it funny at the time too because it was about his hairstyle and how bad he was at football and nothing to do with his race. They probably wouldn't find it funny now because people like you make everyone obsessed with racism
Spot on , Daniel
My thoughts exactly. Bullying, yes; racist, no.
Why do people whine and winge? It was 26 fucking years ago and, in my opinion, hilarious and brilliantly executed. 26 years ago, you would've pissed yourself laughing at the joke.
Edit:Its not acceptable now, but it was 26 years ago, times change.
Who????
Nasty program
Pele was shite too apparently. I guess Skinner and Baddiel must have been amazing players in their time.
Gold!
“...they’re just middle class white boys” you got that right Frank (Clark). David Baddiel blackface just about sums him up.
*wide boys
Was he in blackface?
The same reason Lenny Henry was in a white face.
How the fuck did this get passed? BBC screwed up here. David Baddiel knew better , no way he didn’t know this was racist. This makes his Jews don’t count book a bit hypocritical, when he himself did THIS . Funny how for some people they only get bullying after they’ve been bullied. I’ve seen him since apologise to Jason Lee, 25 years later , I guess better late than never , but … fuck sake ..he should have apologise earlier , he shouldn’t have done it ..what was he thinking?
Everyone did this then. I’m guessing you’re young
There was a culture of this kind of entertainment, I've seen hosts on they think it's all over abuse Chris Eubanks, Frank lebouf etc where it's uncomfortable to watch
No more German mullet jokes. Equality and fairness rules.
To be fair it wasn't just Jason Lee who got ridiculed. Alan Ball was ripped into as well.
And Pele
And that singer
If this is bullying then EVERY Spitting Image sketch ever made requires a personal apology to politicians.
And Jason Lee DID miss an awful lot of goals.
I'm impartial. I think football is shit and resent it taking up so much news and screen time. No apologies from me.
No one is expressly asserting that one race is superior to another race. This is parody, not racism. If this is an example of overt racism, each episode of the television program, In Living Color, contained incontrovertibly racist content.
£14,000 a week average salary for PL player… they’ll take every critical word.
Is it racist against ian dowie??
It’s amazing the stuff you could get away with back in the day, this is really uncomfortable viewing now. Not good.
This is hilarious, dunno why the hate for it.
