Well, unless you have been living under a rock for the past week it will be no surprise that SpaceX used Mechazilla to flawlessly catch Booster 12 out of the air. We already now see SpaceX's Frantic Push to Move Forward with Starship! The Booster is back at the production site, while new Version 2 vehicles appear. Indeed Big Changes Are Coming with Version 2, and we’ve learned and seen so much more around this epic catch event. It has been an absolutely epic week for SpaceX in many ways such as the incredible spectacle breaking a new SpaceX record with Falcon Heavy and Europa Clipper. Then we also have some great new information from VAST and their mini Space Station. So let's jump right into it.

Trying to find out if the side boosters etc will re-enter for a burn up on the clipper? cant find anything anywhere?

Your speculating on later starships perhaps being titanium matches my thinking. The mass increase to orbit would be fantastic.
My 10 yr old son wants to work for SpaceX. When we were watching this live. My son said “now we know what it felt like to see humans land on the moon” watching this, I bet you was the same feelings. People had back then.

It is close to the feeling I had watching them land on the moon at 3 years old. And every televised landing after. But the catching of Starship will be the next big milestone followed by a crewed launch. This is closer to watching the first Space Shuttle launch and landing. The kids today will have a lot of milestones quickly with the rapid advances SpaceX is making. If some of the competitors can actually get their craft into orbit, it will be a fun time to be around.
That catch was nothing short of surgical precision by the SpaceX teams.
It really was one of the most freaking bizarre and incredible things I've ever seen.

@@alesh2275 I don't think they can do it for the next flight, as it would need a new licence. Unless they decide to wait to get it. I guess they will keep the ship return to the block 2 ships.
They need the second tower up and running unless they ditch the booster which Im not sure if they want to do that. Does the tower in Florida have chopsticks installed? That would be crazy if they caught it there @@Edino_Chattino
@@Edino_Chattino Yeah they have lots of TPS testing to do and they aren't going to put that on hold just to get a license for the landing attempt.
I scoffed when it was said heavy booster splashed down on flight 4 with "half a centimeter accuracy". After flight 5 I believe them.
A remarkable fact about the Europa Clipper mission is that SpaceX charged $178 million for the launch. I’ve seen estimates for the originally planned SLS launch of up to two billion USD. Even a Delta would be significantly more than Falcon Heavy,
Even fully expended, the Falcon Heavy is cheaper, at least for interplanetary missions!
The mission is old as hell too. I think it was first named about 20 years ago if I'm not mistaken.

As a Floridian this is hilarious, you put your blinker on to take a spot and as you back in someone will try to take the spot regardless, even if it means "parallel parking" completely backwards, then because they did it backwards they can't figure out how to park less than half way in the road

I love how the booster bumped and banged it's way into the arms, and the arms were like, "don't worry, I've got ya buddy". I know I'm anthropomorphising, but the tower really did look like a live arm catching it.
The craziest thing with SpaceX is that... there will basically never be solid competition in this market they're in within our lifetimes, what they've been able to do so quickly is absolutely nuts, yes blue orgin and rocket labs, but they're not in the kind of scale that SpaceX is currently. Its just so crazy to see, the collective chills that everyone got when that booster was caught... insane.

First mover advantage..
Blue Origin has accomplished very little considering it was founded 2 years before SpaceX. Most rocket companies seem to take 6-8 years to achieve orbit, BO 24 and counting with not even an orbital launch attempt. Pathetic.
It's almost an oxymoron to use Rocket Lab and Blue Origin in the same sentence. Peter, like Elon, is the epitome of overcoming adversity and doing the impossible. Bozos is a clown.

After being destroyed on the 4 previous launches, seen super heavy being brought back in one piece must have been an incredibly emotional sight for the space x team, like seeing a mate come back home.
One of the SpaceX lady hosting was crying when the booster was caught. You can hear it in the audio
I don't think anyone expected the catch to work first time, it is a very difficult operation and impossible to model accurately. A lot of it would have been experience and intuition on the part of the engineers dialling in control system settings. Even getting the booster back to Starbase is pretty complex let alone catching the thing out of the air.

Especially the guys who built components, maybe snuck in a signature here or there. Seeing your baby come back alive must've been a huge sense of satisfaction to the talented engineers.

What an incredible week and that catch was absolutely amazing. Besides getting the ship to hit the spot accurately, one thing not being talked about was the orientation of the pins and how unbelievably accurate that was, just incredible. Thanks for your videos Marcus, I wait for your videos and literally ignore the other videos until I see yours because you always give the best coverage.

It’s crazy how fast the booster slowed down right before it approached the tower
Noticed the booster didn't shake a shutter like flight 4 did as it hit the thicker atmosphere. I think that's because it side-slipped to slow its self by becoming less Aerodynamic as it fell.
When the booster was coming back to the tower , the vision of it coming in at warp speed 9 was incredible, thought it would have to smash into the ground. Instead the unbelievable happened with the chopsticks catch. Still can't believe it. I seen it but I can't believe it 😂
I think that the catch was so much slicker than I was expecting. Certainly for a first attempt.
But the whole process was more like a choreographed dance than the launch of a new space launch system.

This has to be one of the greatest feats involving an actual booster, since they became reusable. I was so happy for all at Spacex that I actually burst into tears. Emotional or what? I feel so silly😂. I’m glad the exterior damage happened in flight, so is probably easily solvable, rather than by slight collision with the tower. Marcus’s various videos have been great. The chat between Marcus, Fraser, Scott was really enjoyable and informative. I can’t wait till launch six. Here’s hoping it will be even more successful, with an even better catch and a no tile burn through on the starship. 👍👍
I'd have loved to have seen the reactions of all the old astronauts seeing this. This is something they could only dream about...even during Shuttle. The Chinese might be able to manufacture etc at a similar rate, but they'll never match the quality or the genuine innovation. This is the kind of excitement and general giddy positivity that the early Space Race must have elicited in the population. I know that this is the most positive I've ever felt during my 48 nerdy space-loving years on this rock. I am starting to feel confident that I may be able to get off this planet in my lifetime, even if it's only temporary (but I'd go to Mars or the Belt one way in a second flat)

Catching the booster will go from being unprecedented two weeks ago, to standard operating procedure by next year.
Now let's land Starship intact!
It's interesting how when space x are unable to fly for a few weeks, they don't really fall behind as they just go and launch loads of rockets in the same week to catch up!
Don’t get it twisted… the delays likely DO slow SpaceX’s plan. They press on as best as feasible, but things might go faster if they could launch at their own pace. Had flight 5 gone up six weeks ago, the resulting findings might have resulted in changes implemented before flights 6 & 7. As is, they pressed on with build-out and testing WITHOUT being able to incorporate possible flight 5 findings. Now decisions must be made… launch without possible improvements, which may accelerate evolution or delay a bit more to incorporate new findings. Either way, progress is likely slowed.

I wish SpaceX would release the footage of inside the engine bay of starship. They used cameras there for the 10km hops. The footage is probably amazing coming back through the atmosphere.
TBH I really didn't think they would pull off the booster catch, hoped they would though but watching it was pretty amazing, kudos to SpaceX.
It’s hard to believe what they are achieving. Catching a Starship, and reusing it will be unbelievable. Once they can do this routinely, the cost to or it per kg will plummet, and off planet exploration will be transformed.

To Quote a wise and strong man from a galaxy, far far away.... "Another happy landing"
The scale of SH is such that I would have never guessed the landing pegs protrude .5 meter!
The degree of precision of that Landing cannot be possibly overstated. The avionics team has to be out of their mind happy, but the real credit has to go to whoever created the gimbal system, and the software control that takes in so many variables and keep the rocket upright while slowing it down. That's just insane.
It's like balancing a 40 story building on your finger.
Reconnecting the booster to the quick disconnect would have been to purge the methane tank most probably, until the tank is purged with nitrogen it isn't safe to have people work on the booster or transport it. Using the launch mount and it's automated systems allows this to be done without risking a crew to go manually connect up nitrogen hoses to the booster.
Even if all they did was prove it COULD reconnect after a launch it would have been a worth while test.
It'll be interesting to see what changes are made to booster. Having one intact is great for engineering teams.
What I found annoying is the falcon heavy launch of Europa Clipper. They did not display graphics to give us a sense of how expending the boosters gave us a better delta-v. Even at release of payload from second stage we were not given even a hint of the escape velocity!!!

What an absolutely bonkers week! 3 Falcon 9s and landings, a Starship launch and catch and a Falcon Heavy with Europa Clipper, which was first proposed god knows how long ago. Is it 20 years?
One major issue with a Starship catch is there was a lot of contact between the catch arms and the booster during the catch. That won't work catching a Starship as it would destroy the heat shield. In fact the arms dragging along the mounting pins for the heat tiles could tear a holes in the starship. This was the first attempt, I'm sure they'll refine their process over time, but really in the end the arms can only touch a Starship at the landing pins nowhere else.

Of all the videos and reviews I have seen of the Starship launch, not one mentioned that all the Raptor engines worked as expected on both the booster and Starship. This is also a first for SpaceX.

I really like the look of planned new space station. Very cool, as it looks more like a 'design', rather than a cobbled collection of bits and bobs.
And by being modular, it won't ever get "old". Just replace the older modules.

Really hope spacex starts to do more useful things with these launches now that they have successfully achieved the mission profile.
They can now recover a booster and can land the starship with precision.
Time for starship v2 and an orbital attempt or alternatively catching the starship at starbase as well.
If we want to go back to the moon in 2026 there is still a ton of work left.
If I had to guess, I'd say that IFT6 will keep the same profile as IFT5, being the last block 1 ship test. IFT7 will go orbital with cargo (Starlink). IFT8+ will attempt refueling if the previous tests were ok.
They may not do a orbital attempt till they show they can reignite a Raptor 3 engine, which means a block 2 Starship at least.

Long term, the need for quickly relaunching is a necessity. Short term, why not use a catch tower that would not endanger the equipment needed for the next launch? Catch tower would only need the chop sticks and the ability to lower the booster/ship to a ground transporter to return for refurbishment.
That's just a waste of time and money. They already have to repair the olm anyway

I quite enjoy watching the booster ping around off of the bumpers as it is being caught.
Now that the flood of dopamine has subsided, I've been thinking of some possible improvements. I think it is ill-advised to use the same "arms" to both catch and manipulate the booster for launch, however, I do recognize that the same Tower should be utilized to provide rapid reusability. In that case, I would build a second set of arms on the opposite side of the Tower above the original set specifically made for catching the booster, including a pivot to swing them over to the launch side arms. That way, once the booster is caught and secured, it can swing to the launch side where the launch arms can receive the booster and take over.

I don't think the gridfins problem is that problematic. They need to change the hot staging ring anyway (it's not reusable right now) They could change the geometry to mitigate the flow of hot gas on the gridfins and they could make the gridfins vertical to minimize the area exposed (vertical or at a angle that does the same thing). They might need to change the geometry of the gridfins if they choose to put them vertically at launch because it looks like they would put significantly more drag vertically. Or maybe they're fast enough to make the switch just before the hotstaging.
