My (state) school was banning phone’s completely for the last couple of decades. Sounds like some schools were just too relaxed.

i was born in early 90s and i quit school after couple years (due my 150+ IQ, schools were too boring and useless to me), but i remember phones being banned aswell. you was allowed to take it to school and class, but it had to be on silent and you wasn't allowed to use it during tests.
i also remember how one of those "tough" guys was always "flexing" his expensive phone, he was that bully-type who thought rules don't apply to him, so one time during test he was doing something on phone, probably playing snake, and didn't notice teacher approach, so teacher took the phone out of his hands and smashed it over his head so hard that he fell off his chair. entire class was laughing and he just sat there on the floor with big eyes and about to cry.
he sat there for a while and then he said something like "my dad will sue you"
but since it was 90s and not nowday eyerolling snowflake society, nothing happened to teacher.
guess what? he was never touching his phone ever again during class. i'm not saying violence is solution, but some people just don't have ears for words. try explaining something to dumb person and it just goes in from one ear and out from other.
take those as example, who constantly scrub on phones while driving .. they won't listen to any reason, but when they crash their car cuz they were scrubbing on phone, then that lesson will most likely be enough for rest of their life. they won't be scrubbing no more.

Well about freakin time!!!! Seriously took you all this long to figure it out???!!!!! With all the those irresponsible social media, ANYONE can see ANYTHING these days, I mean some horrific stuff which is shockingly unimaginable!! And if we as a parents, school and government to stand up today and call these companies out!!!! Your child will forever change! Internet is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE and you go to the park now you don’t see teenagers or even younger kids playing with each other no more but to look at their damn phone!!!!! Less and less social interaction. They are all turning into real life zombies!! To those parents who rather buying their kids the phone in exchange for some ‘peace’ and quiet time for themselves and putting in the minimum nurturing and bonding time with your kids is just the most selfish thing you can do to your kid! Is that the best you can do as a parent!?? Nurturing and cultivate your child’s well being emotionally and spiritually is the best thing you can ever give to your child and is what they truly need deep down! Speaking from someone been studying child psychology for nearly 15 years. It is time for a change! can you imagine with AI adding on top into our future life?? Go figure people.

Discipline! My eldest left last September. I felt it important to provide her with an emergency safety line due to the area we live in. She was taught to not use it inappropriate and was never pulled uponotpr punished as she respected the rules. She also knew if she had broken them rules she would lose that phone and I would not back her behaviour.
Too many parents are defending bad behaviour surrounding these devices. So much so they are threatening these schools. Inner city schools are a tough place exist. Even harder when there is no descipline or consequences.
Phones should not be in school but could be needed for safety on the journey to school.

Saying phones are not the problem is like saying guns are not the problem in America. Of course phones are a problem, they make you lose concentration. They are going to find the majourity of their children having problems giving them up in school, which will highlight they are the problem. I would also take advantage of this, the most punctual child that does all their school and homework, gets their phones back during break times.

There also needs to be a crack down on bullying. There should be a safe space, a bolt hole, in every school where the pupils can get immediate access to a trained professional. Perhaps there are already programs like this happening in schools, I’m not up to date really on what is standard now in schools as my children are all grown but if there aren’t things like this in schools, then there should be. Bullies are now able to get into their victims homes because they have constant access to their victims through the phones. There should also be some sort of naming and shaming of bullies, after a complete investigation of course, to incentivise young people making better choices. So many young people dying from knife crime, probably due to some pointless, childish reasoning as well. It’s heart breaking 💔. I cannot imagine the kind of pressure young people are under these days just trying to grow up. It’s so far removed from my own experiences in the 80’s. I thank god I did not have to face these problems as a young woman, it was difficult enough without all this. Just know, that if you are a young person and struggling with things, there are many, many people who care, even though they don’t know you. Reach out to someone, anyone! Even talking to someone online (an appropriate person, not just some random) will help. They might be able to offer ideas for solutions to your difficulties that you haven’t yet thought off! Give it a try, what do you have to loose? 😢

@@cmciaranmasterson I’m well aware of that fact but yes you are correct, that is one cause but I’ve known more than a few from very good backgrounds that were terrible bullies simply because they thought they were better than those around them and I’ve certainly known more than a few grown ups who behave in the same manner. If you were LUCKY enough to be born into wealth and opportunity, then that’s wonderful but all those others didn’t have any more choice or control over where they were born and into what situation they were born than you did. Simply be grateful for the wonderful things you have in your life and if you have more than you need, and I mean that to include time, compassion and understanding, then why not try to help those around you. You will feel so much better about yourself than if you choose to bully someone more vulnerable than yourself. You never know, you might even learn something valuable.

I've taught in many schools over the years, and the root of the problem is actually confiscation of phones. If a child is not prepared to hand over a phone, you cannot forcibly take it off them as this can lead to all kinds of accusations being made. Having a rule is one thing, but enforcement of that rule is something else. Most kids usually do follow the rules, unfortunately it is a small hardcore who cause the most disruption and that tends to go hand in glove when it comes to looking at parents assisting a school in achieving its aims.

The school instituted a new rule per semester.
Any student caught using a smartphone during class had their phone confiscated for the day.
If the same student was caught again, the phone was confiscated and the student's parents had to come to the school to pick it up.
If it had happened a third time during the same semester, the student could be sent to the Principal's office and paddled (the schools around here have corporal punishment available as a disciplinary option).

With the whole ChatGPT, I wonder what the future holds with Secondary Education. Want to fix the phone issue? Hold the parents responsible and fine them if their kids get caught with their phones in school.

Phones should be banned in classrooms outright. They are a nightmare and students constantly use them. Tic toks made in toilets and filming/photographing of others without consent, obsession with messages all detracts from learning and it’s a massive problem globally. Parents add to this by texting and calling kids when they know they are in class. It all needs to stop.

Personal device assistants are like drugs. People abuse them because people's lives are broken in some way. In case of children, they are prone to phone addiction because of the novelty that the phone and all its applications bring. Children need rigorous mental and intellectual stimulation, well-designed and implemented educational and inter-curricular programmes... etc. Once you start fixing these things, then you will see how children will no longer form unhealthy attachment to their phones, which they are doing, by the way, to fill emotional gaps in their lives, or to cope with the difficulties in their lives.

As of prep school, we could take our phones to school but we had to hand them to the supervisor at the beginning of the lesson and take them back at the end of the day so that nobody could get distracted or caught. Omly during the school trips, we could use our phones for fun. However, phones weren't restricted at college even if we had more than one lecture a day.
PS: We always made sure our phones were shut down before we could hand them at school. At college, we made sure to either power off the phone or keep it silent even during the exams although the former was more preferable.

i only went to school for couple years in late 90s and i remember something similar, altho nobody forced you to give your phone away, teachers had the right to physically take the phone if they deemed it necessary.
they just said that your phone MUST be on silent (no vibration either) and you can't take it out during class, BUT if you was expecting a call from family, then you had the right to keep it on vibrate, but at start of class you had to notify your teacher about it.
i also remember one teacher grabbing some "tough" guy's phone and smashing it over his head so hard that he fell off his chair, entire class was laughing over it, cuz he was one of those entitled rich kids who thought rules dont apply to him. as it was 90s, no action was taken against the teacher, she didn't even have to pay for the damaged phone (which was very expensive at those times).
i don't like violence, but i think if teachers would be allowed to do that, then it would only take couple times per school and kids would be too afraid to use their phones in class. perhaps not smash it over someone's head, cuz some phones nowdays have metal edge, but i see no harm in letting teachers grab the phone and smash it on the ground.
they should make a law that teachers are not held responsible for any damge to kids phones.
