    Wood chips will only rob nitrogen from your plants if they are mixed into the soil. If you keep them on top, as a mulch, the most soil that loses nitrogen is about a centimeter. That topsoil could be sifted, and the remaining bits of wood used on top of the soil.

    I had a garden in Amarillo, TX and it was clay and very poor soil. Put a bale of alfalfa and leaves,grass clippings in to improve the soil. The farm extension agency had classes on all items. 2nd year my soil was improved alot. Did same with flowers.

    I've been stuffing alfalfa pellets in the cracks of the yard during summer for 2 or 3 years now. Yard is definitely improving.
    I also use it in my raised beds and deep water tubes for trees.

    A suggestion: don’t handle fertilizer directly with your hands if you will be flying anywhere in the next week. I had a rather lengthy encounter with TSA after they detected fertilizer on my hands from gardening the day before, and suspected I may have been involved with bomb-making since fertilizer is sometimes used as a component in explosives.

      My daughter was 6 and set off the metal detector. Had a belt buckle sewn on her shorts. They had to do a pat down but made sure to tell her, and me what they were doing. They had to run hands over the elastic then check for residue. My daughter asked what kind of residue. The lady was prepared. Told her she was checking to make sure I rinsed all the detergent out of her clothes when I did laundry.

    Great info! Glad to hear of the alfalfa pellets because I use them in my goat feed anyway and I'm sure the goats don't mind sharing 😆 Thanks for the friendly budget knowledge; it helps a lot during these expensive times. I'm actually trying to sell my goats because its getting very expensive and I only have a herd of 3 😳

    • @SK-jq8um
      @SK-jq8um 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, that's why the eggs are so expensive, they can't afford the feed. An increasing number of hobby farmers will no longer be able to feed their pets, sadly. I guess the one thing saving your goats is they will eat just about anything. 🤣

    Hi Gary, I get a lot out of your videos. Being in the Southwest, I have an aversion to using wood ash as a soil conditioner. Being arid here, which on the average raises soil pH, and much of the water here is on the alkaline side, adding a base such as wood ash to our soils would be detrimental, as wood ash is also alkaline. Same with lime. We use gypsum and soil sulfur here to lower the pH of our soils. Other than that, keep up the good work!

    • @cannabinerd9665
      @cannabinerd9665 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never seen leaf mold for sale anywhere. In it's most basic form it's just making a pile of leaves and waiting for them to break down. The budget sense of leaf mold is that you trade off the price you'll pay for compost with the time it takes to break down. If you're just going to buy something anyway just get regular compost or worm compost.

    • @curiouscat3384
      @curiouscat3384 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cannabinerd9665 True. I live in a mid-size city (300,000) and even though we have a city leaf collection program, many people bag their leaves and put at the curb. I go around the neighborhoods full of oak and maple trees and collect those bags - usually around Thanksgiving here in NC. I have a compost bin, layer with green stuff, turn about once a month and I have compost. A year of composting is best but you can also top dress with the fresher leaf mold.

    If you have logs or wood chips, dig the dirt away and place them at the bottom. The plants' roots won't reach them, so they will slowly decompose without issues while filling your beds back up. If the top soil doesn't have chips, it will compact too much. Where I live, it's all heavy top soil, but that depends on location.

      Yes. For seeds on the surface it could be an issue. But transplants would be fine. That is why it is good to put it out late fall too and let it sit.

      Yeah if it is thick in the top 2 inches is can inhibit growth as microbes initially work on it. But I would work it well in the top 6-8 inches if you are in a pinch. It should be fine that way.

    I’m wondering if the alfalfa pellets are safe in your garden. The reason I wonder is that the lion’s share of alfalfa grown in the US now is from genetically modified seed made to withstand multiple sprays of roundup. Wouldn’t that roundup still be in the green growth of the alfalfa after it was harvested and pelleted? Couldn’t that act as an herbicide and prevent plants from growing? Does anybody have any experience with that?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      So you arent over doing with stuff and can water it in well with fish emulsion or a water soluble organic. That provides extra nitrogen. For transplants, you can go as early as 4 weeks IMO. If you had transplants that cant wait, just mix the area well where they go and the can go in right away. For seeds, I would go with 45-60 days.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      Everyone has an opinion and that makes it hard. Pressure treated wood is fine. It's copper based. Leaching of copper is like... it will kill the plants well before they got to levels that would harm us. Galvanized could leach to some degree. But all the research I read its a non issue. Plant your plants 4-6 inches from metal if you are worried. Good luck.

    We are going into our fourth year with our raised beds, so this video is really timely Gary! I have some 2021 oak leaf mold on standby to top dress, plus we have alfalfa meal and fireplace ashes! Our issue is we still have plants in the garden that live year-round (collard greens, leeks, etc.). Top dressing around them is harder than an empty bed. We don't want to bury them with new material around their base. Any tips?

    You read about the Chesapeake bay issue right? Excessive nutrients being applied and watered away the you water is creating a huge problem. Less fertilizer is more, I might use as much fertilizer on 1000sqft that you use in one bed. Also only water once to twice a week deeply. My plants thrive with the minimal nutrients, compost, and water. The environment will only thrive with how us gardeners and farmers manage it.
