  • The Emerald Buddha
Historical sources indicate that the statue surfaced in northern Thailand in the Lannathai kingdom in 1434. One account of its discovery tells that lightning struck a pagoda in a temple in Chiang Rai, after which, something became visible beneath the stucco. The Buddha was dug out, and the people believed the figurine to be made of emerald, hence its name. King Sam Fang Kaen of Lannathai wanted it in his capital, Chiang Mai, but the elephant carrying it insisted, on three separate occasions, on going instead to Lampang. This was taken as a divine sign and the Emerald Buddha stayed in Lampang until 1468, when it was finally moved to Chiang Mai, where it was kept at Wat Chedi Luang.
The Emerald Buddha remained in Chiang Mai until 1552, when it was taken to Luang Prabang, then the capital of the Lao kingdom of Lan Xang. Some years earlier, the crown prince of Lan Xang, Setthathirath, had been invited to occupy the vacant throne of Lannathai. However, Prince Setthathirath also became king of Lan Xang when his father, Photisarath, died. He returned home, taking the revered Buddha figure with him. In 1564, King Setthathirath moved it to his new capital at Vientiane.[1]
    Ubosoth outside decorations closeup
In 1779, the Thai General Chao Phraya Chakri put down an insurrection, captured Vientiane and returned the Emerald Buddha to Siam, taking it with him to Thonburi. After he became King Rama I of Thailand, he moved the Emerald Buddha with great ceremony to its current home in Wat Phra Kaew on 22 March 1784. It is now kept in the main building of the temple, the Ubosoth.
    Gold clothing
The Emerald Buddha itself is simply the Jadeite statue,[2] but it is adorned with garments made of gold. There are three different sets of gold clothing, which are changed by the King of Thailand or a liaison in a ceremony at the changing of the seasons -- in the 1st Waning of Lunar Months 4, 8 and 12 (around March, July and November). The three sets of gold garments correspond to Thailand's summer season, rainy season, and cool season. The two sets of gold clothing not in use at any given time are kept on display in the nearby Pavilion of Regalia, Royal Decorations and Thai Coins on the grounds of the Grand Palace, where the public may view them.

Thailand ever did help to the Lao people so why Lao blaming their brothers ? Here is a great piece of history ! If you really love Emerald Buddha then pay respect but not come here to blame each other ,please. If you are a real believer , a real Buddhist man why dare to use bad words against Thais ? Lao & Thai = Brothers ! Me l do pay my respect to you both. Thailand has a great history ; We cannot return back in time to change it . Laos been the most heavily bombed country on Earth ; We cannot get back the thousands of wasted lives. All we can do is to pay respect to our ancestors then to carefully choose the best leaders for out future. Sawasdee Krup , Sa Ba Dee ! Salut [hello] from Romania !

King of Cambodia sent 10000 troops to escort the emerald Buddha to Laos when the princess married a Laos prince. They were supposed to spread Buddhism with it. If was sent from sri Lanka. Thai ended up capturing it. It was taken from Laos. Khmer and Laos had very close relations with cambodia during the time when Thai rebelled.

You're really sick and deluded! Need to see a doctor. First off, the first king of any dynasty in the world was a common person who possessed power and out-shined in his strength and power. No was born a king in the first place. The founder of a dynasty, whether in Europe or in Laos, was a common person. So what is wrong with General Chao Phraya Chakri.
Second, Anouvong did not take the Pra-Keo back to Laos. The image was taken to Siam during the reign of King Taksin, and was moved to Bangkok in 1784 as stated in the video. Anouvong was taken to Bangkok and was raised in the Thai Court. He was a friend of King Rama III, and King Rama III even supported the appointment of Anouvong's son to be ruler of Champasak in spite of disapproval by several influential courtiers then. During the reign of King Rama II, Anouvong was appointed ruler of Vientiane, a vasal state then. At the same time Anouvong also vowed allegiance to the Hue mandala, a common practice at the time. When a request by Anouvong for the return of court entertainers which were relocated in Sara Buri was rejected, Anouvong decided to rebel against the Siamese Kingdom and was finally suppressed. So there was no evidence that he took the Emerald Buddha to Laos.
Thai and Lao people originally came from the same Tai language group in Southern China. When they migrated south, they did not come in one large group at the same time. They came in batches and at different time. They met with indigenous people and mixed with them. Those who went north adopted the Chinese culture and today they are settled in Vietnam. Those who moved south and settled in northern Thai, formed what was called the Lanna Kingdom, those who settled in the area of the Mae Khong River formed the Lan Xang Kingdom, and those who moved further south formed the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya Kingdoms. The land on which latter three kingdoms was founded was onced occupied by the Khmer (Lan Xang and Sukhothai) and Mon and Khmer ( Ayutthaya. AT first the Tai were a minority and later they became more powerful and defeated the indigenous. These Tai people adopted the culture and religions of the people they conquered and interracial marriage was the norm. Ayutthaya, though ruled by the people they considered themselves as Siamese, was a multicultural kingdom. These Tai people were different in their own culture and language because of their mix with the local people, different geographical terrain, and religious practice peculiar to the groups. Siamese could not be considered pure blood because of interracial marriages--Mon, Khmer, Malay, Indian, etc. Because of its multiculturalism, the word Siam was exclusive. During the period of nationalism--the fight against western imperialism, the name of the country was changed to Thailand to include all ethnic groups and make them feel that they belong to the same country.

@@didierroux4596 Another thing is the Emerald Buddha in the Thai Royal Palace. The Emerald Buddha is a Buddha image carved from soft, emerald-green nephrite jade. Jade is the most found gem in Burma and Northern Thailand in which the Lanna Kingdom (Northern,Thailand) and Burma have a border, there has been a trade since the past and Burmese and Lanna people often carve jade into jewelry and valuables, while Thai Siam tends to use gold and other non-jade gemstones. Tommy, You should be shy to write that in 1434, Lanna was Lannathai of Thailand. In that period there was not the word Thailand at all. There were only Kingdom of Lanna, Lanxang and Siam. These three kingdoms had thier own lands and power. Lanna belonged to Yuan people, Lanxang belonged to Lao people. Siam belonged to Siamese. At later time Lanna and Lanxang belonged to a half Yuan and Lao King Saysetthathirath. So he could move the Emeral Buddha to Lanxang without any problems, because his grandfather( previous Lanna king) gave everything to him both land and properties. Even his grand mother Quess Jirapapha and a lot of Yuan people went along with King Saysethathirath to Vienchan to establish the new capital of Lanxang. Then Lanna was lost to Mynmar later time. There was nothing related to Siam at all. After Siam won the war to Lanxang Vientiane, Siamese took it to Bangkok. In Porpiboon Songkam era, he changed the name of Siam to be Thailand. Then there was a word Thailand. No lie.

Emerald Buddha in the Thai Royal Palace. The Emerald Buddha is a Buddha image carved from soft, emerald-green nephrite jade. Jade is the most found gem in Burma. In which the Lanna Kingdom (Northern,Thailand) and Burma have a border, there has been a trade since the past and Burmese and Lanna people often carve jade into jewelry and valuables, while Thai Siam tends to use gold and other non-jade gemstones. Lao people as well. Most of them use gold and silver. Also, I tried searching for gem information in Cambodia but your country has no emeralds, no jade and no diamonds. Then how can the Emerald Buddha belong to Cambodia?

Thank 4 this valuable information. What's your opinion thru out the century, Siam made up so many lies & trivia surrounding Emerald Buddha, that Siam is the rightful owner?? Siam is nothing, but a big thieve & robbed everything from the Lao pple. If I am in power of the Laos gov't, i would file a claim to get Emerald Buddha back through a world court; Greece got the statue of Apollo back from Italy when Roman invaded Greece & Macedonia (kingdom of Alexander the great); Greece won the case!!

This is because Chaing Rai became a part of Thailand and benefit from Thailand's development. BITCH!

It's easy for a thief to say, "let it be". Not so easy for those that got stole from. We missed our Sacred Emerald Buddha. WE also realize that it's not realistic to get it back peacefully. So our King did something that the Thai kingdom once did to our Kingdom. We cursed them.
We were cursed by the Thai kingdom to not ever be prosperous. In return, our kingdom cursed the Thai kingdom with turmoil and unrest.....guess what?

    • @tikitak1155
      @tikitak1155 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No country is perfect. Not Laos, not Thailand and not ANY country on this planet.
In regards to your comments about Laos being run by Vietnamese morons, I agree with you on that.
Laos had its shares of unrest. But not at levels of and frequencies like Thailand. It's stable...for now....
I will say it like I see it. If you said something that's true, I'll tell you you're right. If I disagreed with you, I'll also let you know. I'm not going to pretend.
We can debate history all day. Truth is, history is subjective. It's taught differently, and from the perspectives of each side. So....you called me this and I called you that. Fact is, This figure had been taken away during war. Not a gift. No one expects to ever see it in Laos ever again. We want to....but reality is different from dreams.
I stand by my comments. I respect yours too. You defend what you think is right. I will do the same.

Thailand did not steal it. In the old days, when wars were waged, and the conquers had to make sure that the defeated would not rise and caused the trouble again, the man power had to be relocated, the city had to be emptied and its man power added to the conquerors, the valuables had to be confiscated. In this case, the Buddha image was taken as part of the the confiscated. Laos could not blame the Thai for taking it because the Lao army could not protect and defend the county. It's Anouvong's fault to begin the insurrection in the first place , which led him to his death and to the demise of the Wiang Chan Kingdom. The price or the trophy for the conqueror. This image would change hand in the future if Thailand failed to keep it.
You cannot change history--why fret over the loss. Time has lapsed for hundreds of years. History is for us to learn about our mistakes, not to repeat it again. It's not for us to dwell on them too much that we lose to see the light of the future.
