    Just finished the video. What I do is watch them once to see what,s there and then replay them and take detailed notes on everything you demonstrate so I can refer to them as I learn this recorder. One thing I did not see that you might consider for a future video is how to configure and copy tracks from the computer to the SD card to use in a project. My group has created a bunch of percussion tracks and I would like to be able to stick the SD card into the computer, copy which ever one I needed to the card and then assigned it to an input/track. I am going to study the manual today to see if I can figure out how to do it but I am sure others may also want this type of info. Thanks again for all your efforts. Zoom should hire you as an online instructor.

    Another very helpful video. It's much easier to learn from these tutorials than reading from the manual.
    (Steve could you please explain how to adjust the volume of tracks 9-16 when mastering? I can't find the 'fader' display screen. Stay safe. I'm from New York, and I can tell you Covid is no joke.)

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a Long Island boy myself. The NY never leaves me.
      The tricky thing is when you're going back and forth from 1-8 and 9-16. I made mention of it in one of the videos. Let's say for instance you have the fader on track 1 all the way up and then you go to track 9 (which uses the same fader) and you have it pulled nearly all the way down. All is good until you go back to track 1 to make a minor adjustment. But because you just worked on track 9 and the fader is nearly at the bottom, as soon as you touch that fader the volume on track 1 is gonna drop. So, what I do after I have everything near where I want it, I make volume adjustments by doing this (and this will answer your question): hit the pan/eq button, hit the track that you want to make the adjustment on, use the up/down arrows and look for fader, and then use the jog wheel to adjust the volume/fader level. Hope that helps. If you get a chance please check out my Easy Listening Instrumental video. Half of the songs on that one were recorded on the Zoom and I'm tryin' to get a little love on that one. th-cam.com/video/_Qj4KwE1AfM/w-d-xo.html Stay safe.

    Hi Steve, I love my R16 and your tutorials are great! Could you remind me, am I right in thinking that you can't record the send/return FX live on a track? You will have to apply them afterwards and record to the master, right?

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to hear you're diggin' the recorder. The send effects are always there (that's your reverb/chorus/delay) and you can change them whenever you want. When you click that send button you can choose which reverb you want. If you click the send button and then arrow right you can choose a chorus (or delay) to pair it with. Then, when you click the Pan/EQ button and arrow down you'll see Reverb and Chorus and you can adjust it as you want on each track. So, when you use the reverb on your guitar or vocals you can hear it while you record. Just hit that EQ button, choose the track, arrow down, and turn up the reverb. You won't be stuck with that particular reverb later on if you don't like it. The send reverb isn't actually recorded to the track.

    Hey man, thanks for the awesome video. I'm struggling to use my R16 with lavalier mics, I'm thinking of purchasing some vxlr's from Røde to connect the lavs to the R16 but i'm not certain that it provides the plugin power needed for the lavs. Can you shed some light on this man? Thanks in advance!!

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What problem are you having with the lavaliers? Lavaliers are wireless mics that clip to your shirt. So, the lavalier mic plugs into the wireless transmitter, the receiver picks up the signal, and you'd run an xlr or 1/4" cable from the receiver to the Zoom. That should work. If it doesn't work I'd check the battery in the transmitter. Now if the wireless thing isn't your problem and you're trying to plug the lavalier in direct, then it could be a plug thing. There are a few type of plugs, TS (tip sleeve- 1 black band on plug), TRS (tip, ring, sleeve- 2 black bands on plug), and TRRS (tip, ring, ring, sleeve- 3 black bands on plug). I gather the Rode VXLR will work provided the plug on your lavalier is a TRS (has 2 black bands on it). So, check out your plug on the lavalier and see how many bands it has on it. Then, there's the whole subject of dynamic mics and condenser mics. Condenser mics need phantom power which the Zoom has on inputs 5 and 6. Hope that helps ya brother.

    Hi Steve, I came across a bit of an issue when transferring a master to a usb stick. I did a first master which I stored on a usb stick and downloaded to my computer > no problem > but then I recorded the guitars again cuz there were a few screw-ups in the first master. I then mixed down that second version > no problem. Now, when I tried to store that second version on my usb stick, it just wouldn’t let me do and kept storing the first version. The second version with the new guitars are in the machine but fir some reasons can’t be stored in the usb stick. Do you have any idea why ?

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Make sure you're pulling up that 2nd master for transfer. Multiple masters can be saved on the Zoom SD card. As I'm sure you discovered, when you mix down it doesn't overwrite the previous master. If you have a laptop you can put that Zoom SD card in and transfer it that way too. Also check to make sure the stick isn't near full.

    Thank you for this tutorial. I'm planning on purchasing an R16. I do drum covers on TH-cam and I have all my tracks sent to different parts of the drum. One mic on the snare, 4 mics on each tom, bass drum, and two condenser mics for overhead. Would it be possible for me to record the drum tracks and play the song on another track without that song being recorded. I know there are possibly 16 tracks total however eight of them use mics. If you know what I'm saying. I'm also very new to this.

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Basically, as an example, you can record the drums on tracks 1 through 8, and record the song you're playing to on tracks 9 and 10. Then when you mix down the drums just mute tracks 9 and 10. Or, you can just listen to the song from a CD player while you record the drums, and not record the song at all.

    Steve, I am having no problem adding an effect before I record a sound file by following your instructions but I am struggling with the proper procedure to add an effect to a sound file after I have recorded it dry. I recorded a rhythm and lead track and managed to get an effect on the rhythm track but when I went to add a different effect on the lead track the effect from the rhythm track effect was already there. When I changed that and went back to the rhythm track the new effect from the lead track was there instead of the one I originally placed there. Very confusing. Thanks for all your hardwork on these instructional videos. I have enjoyed them. Your presentations are in much ways , in my humble oppion, are improving.
    Question:
    Have you needed or used the track edit feature: time stretch?
    I have used the track edit feature : trim.
    Without success when it needed to correct track sync problems.
    Example
    Down loaded seperate bass, drum, guitar and vocal tracks.
    Play back those tracks one at a time on an external audio player
    as each is recorded onto a seperate track on the r16.
    (Using the 1 bar count in on each seperate track)
    But it is humanly impossible to get each track start on exactly beat one, some tracks start record at beat one plus 100 miliseconds and so with varing degrees of beat one plus 100 - 180 miliseconds.
    The track edit feature is limited to 100 miliseconds, so no corrections can be made.
    this difference in start track playback causes a 100 - 180 miliseconds echo between tracks?
    I am trying to ascertain if the edit track feature time stretch will help in syncing.

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No Mike, I haven't. That's where it's better to use a computer based recording program where you can see the audio waves and move them around and sync them up, rather than using a multitrack recorder.

When I exit out of project 1 and create a new project, track selector lights for tracks 1 & 2 are green by default! Without performing a factory reset it is possible to some how just reset the new project's settings? I don't know if I am making sense?

    Thank you so much for providing these great tutuorials, Steve. Question: After recording 6 tracks, I went into each individual track and adjusted all the pan/eq perameters and added reverb and effects to each one where needed, then hit PLAY and adjusted the sliders and got the volumes balanced out to where the overall recording sounded good to my ears. I then reviewed your tutorial on how to master down to a 2-track stereo track and transferred the SD card over to my PC with the good speaker setup and was excited to hear the final result, only to find that all the reverb and effects were gone and the mix was way off. So how do I mix down to a 2-track that keeps all the individual perameters that I originally set up? Thanks in advance for all your help!

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm... you've got me stumped Mark. It's probably something simple. Let's start here... put the SD card back into the Zoom and pull up the song you were working on. Above the red master fader, push the master/mix down/play button and light it up green. Then press play and listen back. That's the last mixdown you did and everything you did should be there (fades, reverbs, eq, etc.) Do that first and let me know how you make out. Sometimes a final mix down does lose it's "pop and crispness" because everything is getting squashed down to 2 tracks, but all the reverb and fades and levels of each track should be there.

    • @markcanterbury9003
      @markcanterbury9003 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevekonbass Thanks for your reply, Steve. Following your instructions above ... The mix sounds fine on the master tracks, but for some reason I'm not getting reverb effects at all on the vocal mic, which is strange. I've switched the mic from Track 3 to Track 7 to see if it would make a difference and I'm still not able to get any kind of reverb effect, although the other tracks ARE working fine with their reverb/chorus/pan effects using the Pan/EQ and Send Return knobs. Could it be somewhere in the Insert Effects knob parameters?

    • @markcanterbury9003
      @markcanterbury9003 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should also point out that I'm recording mainly acoustic with vocal and harmony tracks, and using Band-In-A-Box for a backing track containing bass and rhythm tracks. It sounds great together on the Zoom master tracks, but the transfer from the SD card to the PC is way off. Whereas the master tracks sound warm and even on the Zoom, they sound overly crisp and with out of balance volume mix on the PC.

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay... let's strip it down. Pull up the song and mute all of the music and backing tracks and just listen to that vocal track. Listening to the vocal track by itself, push the "track" fader up and down and make sure the volume of the vocals goes up and down. Then try to adjust the pan, reverb, and eq and see what happens.

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, that happens. Even in pro studios. Sounds great in the studio and then you listen to it in your car or home stereo and it sounds off. That's where mastering comes into play. There are mastering effects in the Zoom that can help. It's a bit in depth. Might call for another video.

    Steve. I am having major problems with my bounce feature on my unit. I lost my drum track which is on tracks 1-2. I already lost the guitar earlier.I worked around it, but I do not understand what I am doing wrong. I thought it was that I didn’t go back in and turn the bounce feature off, but I was very careful not to forget this time. I am not so sure that this unit is functioning correctly. You mentioned earlier that I may go back in and find the “lost” tracks on my laptop- but what then.? I’m frustrated. I am not sure what to do. Any ideas?

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Let's start by putting the SD card in your laptop and listening to each track in the project. First make sure you're looking at the right project number. For instance, if you're looking for the tracks to "Make A Decision" it won't say "Make A Decision" on the SD card, it will be assigned a project number, so make sure you have the project number to the song you're having a problem with. Click on the project number and the audio files for each track you recorded should come up. Listen to each track to see if the tracks you think are gone, are actually still there. We're doing this just to see if somehow the tracks you think got erased actually got erased, or are actually still there. If they are still there, we can hopefully just assign them to a track and you'll be back in business. Also, let's try another thing just to make sure the Zoom is working right.... start a brand new project. On track 1 just record yourself talking into a mic, just like 10 seconds worth. On track 2 just record 10 seconds worth of guitar. Now let's try bouncing. Keep tracks 1 and 2 lit green, keep both pans straight up, and keep the faders up. Put the Zoom in bounce mode (make sure bounce is turned "on" and you're not in Swap mode). A little black box that says "bounce" should display on the screen. Put track 4 into record mode (red). Rewind track to zero, hit record button then play button. The record button should be solid red and tracks 1 and 2 should bounce to 4. You should be able to hear the tracks playing while you do the bounce. After completed hit stop, rewind to zero, mute tracks 1 and 2, put track 4 into play (green), push the fader up on track 4 and make sure the master fader is up. Try doing both of these things I suggested and let me know how you made out. Hopefully we can figure it out.

      @@stevekonbass that is a great idea. I will do that to see if my bounce feature is working correctly. I actually had made a master for this new song...I was able to reassign it back to my R16 using the usb cable (just like you illustrated in the video) and bam! There it was. Hi, I've seen many videos on the R16 but have yet to find one that explains how to import and assign Audio files to tracks within a Project.
    After many hours of banging my head against the brick wall I'm no nearer achieving imports to tracks. I've got as far as moving audio files to the R16 Project via card reader but importing them into tracks just doesn't happen.
    The file - e.g. MONO-000 just flashes at me with an asterisk in front, i.e. *MONO-000 that's as far as I've got.
    I'm sure others will have stumbled across this problem so if you put up a video that de-mystifies this process you'll make many people happy including me - PLEASE!
    Just to complicate things, there's a video of someone going through this process with an R8 which seems a lot easier. The R16 doesn't seem so user friendly with regard to this process.

      You need to press [PROJECT] then press left arrow to select >FILE and press [ENTER]. Press the [PLAY/MUTE/REC] button of the desired tract, and display will show "Not Assigned" or the current file name. Use the jog wheel to choose the file you want to assign to the track, and press [ENTER]. The files must be uncompressed WAV format, 16 or 24 bit.
      You can copy audio files between your computer and the R16 by connecting the R16 to the computer using the supplied USB cable, then press [USB], and left arrow to select >CARD READER. After a few seconds the R16 should appear as a new file device on your computer. You can drag and drop files from your computer into the appropriate "PROJxxx/AUDIO" folder. You can drag files in both directions - to and from the R16. When you've finished, eject the R16 from your computer, then on the R16 press [EXIT] and [ENTER].

      @@stevekonbass ok, so I recorded vocals on tracks 5-6 and guitar on track 8 (directly from my Marshall head)- I needed to bounce the vocal tracks down to track 7 which was empty. When I went to listen to see how it sounded, I noticed that the guitar on track eight was gone.!! I spent several days on the guitar part alone. This has happened three times now with different tracks/instruments on various scenarios. Not sure what I am doing or not doing wrong. This happened on “No Man’s Land” and it was a true blessing in disguise. I actually like the new guitar part way better, but this time I may be forced to redo the vocals as well because the guitar part is extremely hard to replicate with my current vocal arrangement. Just wondering... oh and the undo/redo function didn’t bring back my now erased guitar part. Lol

      @stevekonbass  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm... okay, first make sure that when you bounce that tracks 5 and six are green, 7 is red, and 8 is muted (no color). After the bounce is completed, take it out of bounce mode, turn every track to play (green), and push up all the track faders and see what's there. Also, if it happens again, try putting the SD card in a laptop and look to see what files are in the project. Just double check to see if that guitar track is there. And listen to every file. Once I thought I lost tracks too but when I checked the SD card they were actually there. I just had to reassign them to tracks.

    Question. What is the biggest advantage/benefit to bouncing a track? I am new to this stuff.

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It would help if you needed to free up tracks to record on. Let's say you recorded a cow bell on track 14 and a shaker on track 15. You could mix those two together and bounce them to track 16, thus freeing up tracks 14 and 15 to record on. Also, bounce is helpful if you wanted to record a guitar "dry", add an insert effect to that guitar after recording it dry, and then wanting to use another insert effect to do mastering. You can't use 2 inserts effects at the same time so in that instance you'd record the guitar "dry", choose a guitar insert effect to add to it (add it to the TRACK as opposed to input) and then bounce that track to another track, which then will print the guitar insert effect to the track. That would then free you up to use a mastering effect since you can't use 2 insert effects at the same time.
