This is, by far, the best video on decals that I've seen - which is a lot. This is also the first brand comparison I have come across. Going into detail on the different characteristics is much appreciated.
I apply decals the same way, as I have found this to be the most effective. I've seen people use sharp tweezers to pick up the decal from the backing, but that runs the risk of potentially damaging the decal or scratching paint. Using a q-tip, one end wet, is the way to go.
You are correct about the Bandai decals - they do take a while to activate. Since most decals will be symmetrical, I'll batch mine out, doing 2-4 in a series. Submerge one in water for like 10 seconds, then set it on the wet foam. Repeat for the others, giving the first one a bit to soak. By the time I've got them all cut out, soaked, and on the foam, the first one will be separated and ready to be applied. I've found that following this cycle improves the overall efficiency of the process. I think one of the reasons people always dread the decal phase is because it is time consuming. Anyone who feels that way should definitely give this a shot and see how much you can cut down on your decaling time.
    Anyway, great video.
    Keep up the good work!
    Subbed.

Thank you for your kind words and feedback. Yeah, I used to use tweezers to shift the decal around or a cotton bud, it just made things harder. So I switched to a croc clip skewer to do it, no more paint scratches.
I might do another video covering more brands like Delpi but it depends on how well the video performs :D Again, thanks for the support.

You can use hot water to activate the decals much faster. Usually takes about 2-3 seconds using the hot water.

I totally agree with you, bro. For Bandai, it took way too long for the cut to be activated. I had to dip the decals and soak it around 30 seconds, for the prints to start 'moving'....nahh, I do not have time for that. Simpro serves the purpose, perfectly.

There's other brand water decals that I would suggest you to try out. The last decals you show in this video is Evolution Studio brand(Evo).
    1. Snow flame
    2. Artisan's Club
    3. TRS brand
    4. G-rework
    5. Evo brand Extreme Clear type(HIQ)
    6. Delpi decal (The Best)
Snow flame feel decent and some marking they might simplify the printed detail. The other 5 is more satisfying, evo do have two types of decal - fluoresecent and you need a uv light/torch to see the effect of course, another one is extreme clear(HIQ) with amazing sharpness of detail printed but so far not much option for it. I've tried all the above listed.

This is only my theory, but Bandai might have more constraints in mind when delivering sets of water slide decal along with model kits.
The thicker & less active decal can help:
    1. The decal set less prone to damage, while being in a box together with runners & parts.
To truly protect water slide decal sets, you will need separate packaging (like 3rd-party brand does), which cost more & Bandai chose not to do even until now.
    2. Sets can be on shelf for months, even years. This might be a part in slowing down degradation of water decal sets, while being in storage for a long time.
With that in mind, Bandai could be in a tougher spot when deciding to include water slide along with the kit.
But then I wouldn't go for Bandai decals as default either, since it's nearly impossible to keep from peeling use without MarkSetter/MarkSofter (or equivalent substitute).

This was very informative, thanks for the video, unfortunately the brand i accidentally bought wasnt here but thats fine, i can check the decal quality like on what you did with the pla plate, great idea!
the brand i accidentally bought was the G-Rework, which is the Ghost Custom decal, but the one i bought was the bootleg version of the ghost custom decal lmao, their logo got this black flame thing on the decal sheet, in the G-rework website there was actually a warning about piracy decal, which i shouldve researched more before buying lmao, it makes me a bit worried if the print quality will be worse or not, its my first ghost custom decal as well lmao
if by any chance you actually have any experience with the brand, can you share some in the reply? thanks!

So your not a fan of mark setter/softer or comparable products? I’m definitely a fan of the softer (which ever stage 2 is) not sure about the setter. Also you should try out the mecha army decals they have a few different sheets and also in different scales which is nice.

    • @GunplaNewbie
      @GunplaNewbie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I have tried mark softers/setters a few times and most of the time they gave me more problems than solutions. It could be my inexperience with these products. On large decal pieces, I attempted to soften the decal just to have it adhere better on curved surface. But instead, it made the decal "weak" and it was torn due to minor adjustment attempts.
Later on I found out that I could just try non-bandai decals and they're usually thinner, activates faster and adheres well. Then I found no reason to use softer/setter again. Sure thing man, I'll try out more decal brands once I've run out. Thanks :D

@@GunplaNewbie use the blue color mr hobby softer, dont use TAMIYA softer, TAMIYA is for their own car model kits, it would corrodes bandai kit a little. just use Mr. Hobby Blue + Green softer.
most of the time 90% is using blue softer without an problem, you only apply Green softer for big surface decals that u might see air bubbles in it when u dont apply finely.
Blue softer is for before use, apply with it after u pull out from water, Green softer is for after applied use. apply Green softer covering the whole big surface decal and leave it there until it dry out (evaporate wholely), then just softly rolled it dry with cotton bud and top coat it.
decals is about patient, i had bad experience with green softer that tore my decals before, then i found out people suggest to let the green softer dry out completely itself.

    • @GunplaNewbie

I still think simpro is the best at least for me. And I do think the adhesive might be affected if you dont use it after a long time. I did a sazabi a long time ago and the large emblem decal on the shield crumbled in to many small pieces with just a bit of pressure. I think I've got an old kit and the age of the decal could be why it's so fragile.
I should add that how you store your decals could be a factor. I store them in a cool area.
