- Commuters spotted a man hanging on the outside of the Manhattan-bound C train. He hopped off and walked away uninjured at the Lafayette Street station. Subway rider Matthew Beary shared the video “to prove he was still alive at the end.” Please don’t try this dangerous move.

My son’s friend was found dead on the subway tracks yesterday. He was subway surfing. We are all distraught, thinking about him falling, thinking about his mother being told by the detectives they had identified the body. Please, find another way to get the thrills, something like rock climbing where you can develop skills, and still feel the thrill. You’re not only risking your own life when you subway surf, you’re risking the heart and soul of all the people that love you.

I was recommended this video because someone lost their arm doing this recently.
That is why you need a guard (conductor as you say in the US). Passengers cannot be relied upon to pull the emergency stop. That WAS an emergency and someone should have stopped the train before it left the station - there was a very real danger the chap would be killed. A guard (conductor) observes the train from the rear as it passes down the platform and is ready to bring the train to a stop if he/she sees something wrong . Driver Only Operation is so wrong!
It's more dangerous to hit the emergency stop... that's literally how people die. The main reasons are suicide (obviously), getting electrocuted from the cables (instant death), the train hard breaking which makes it very difficult to hold on if not impossible depending on where your standing. It's why I always Lodge myself between a place where I can also use my feet to push against the breaks
In my city, subway trains have side mirrors just like a bus and the driver is looking in them until the train completely leaves the station.

I've been riding the trains for the past three decades, and one the trains is the "A" I use this route to go shopping and to go home in Brooklyn. I never seen people surf on the trains. Where is MTA doing something about this, including Mayor DeBiasio? He's responsble for this nonsense.
