I remember the thrill of learning Zhaan was flora... it's one of those brilliant moments in storytelling when something gets revelaed that is at once unexpected and entirely fitting!
Zhaan got me thinking about Maldis, which got me thinking that I like how even some of the main characters who aren't the main protagonist had their own personal villains to deal with. Zhaan had Maldis, Dargo had Machton and Rygel had Durka and Bishan.
(sung to the tune of WAP)
Rygel: I'll get a mop and bucket.
Zahn: that's a photogasm.
Brian Henson said in the commentary of the episode for Rhapsody in Blue that he played with the idea that all the Delvians were going to be female, that they would all have the same traits and coloration, but they would all take on the form of whatever species their fathers were. So, that would have meant that Zhaan's father would've been Sebacian. (They didn't go with that in the end, obviously :) ).
Ok I think the Mass Effect people were fans of Farscape. This description sounds exactly like the Asari. That is wild.
"You're a vegetable?!"
I've been re watching the series on amazon prime after finding these videos and its just as good as I remember but wow do I wish the series was in HD and 16x9
Yes, we are spolied now with better image quality. But hey, they should do a revival now in HD!
Zhaan was a great character... at times. I loved her especially at the beginning of the first episode -- very blue and very alien -- and thought there was lots of promise with her character. I think the writers made a mistake near the end of season 1 when they gave her the power to turn invisible. As I recall, that was dropped immediately. But what really bugged me was an episode in season 2 (pretty sure it was season 2 and wish I could recall the specific episode) when she freaks out about something on Moya and her voice gets high and she basically loses control. I thought this was not true to the character who practiced meditation and staying calm. I enjoyed Zhaan but can't say I loved her. That aside, another great video. Thanks!
Yes, you are remembering "Picture If You Will" that was the return of Maldis. I agree, Zhaan was written very poorly in that episode. It is my second least favorite episode.
With the invisibility, and the mind tricks she was able to play and the control of her mind, I always wondered, if she could take on someone like Maldis, what was the reason she couldn't defeat Scorpius? The writers pulled a "D and D" (ala Game of Thrones) and just "forgot" she could do these things. ;)
@@mythra7174 Yes, Scorpius being better that a 10th level ... later they added that mental teacher to justify his mental strength being stronger than Zhaans ...
👍
My favourite Farscape character
As a Farscape master, can you please tell me why no one knows where they are in Farscape. Like... They meet a luxan and a whole colony of Delvians and still can't find their planets
Zhaan, D'Argo, and Rygel have all been prisoners so long they have no idea where the Peacekeepers have brought them. In Epsiode 1 they had to starburst randomly into the Uncharted Territories which made matters worse. They are literally flying blind in an unmapped region. Crichton has no clue for obvious reasons and Aeryn has no home and she's a military grunt without much knowledge.
You raise a great point that the Devlians in "Rhapsody in Blue" probably do know how to get back to Delvia and why our heroes don't think to ask is a good question. The Orican we meet in "Vita Mortis" makes a vague comment that she has lost track of the way home. Mostly though, they don't know where they are because they are in the Uncharted Territories, which is a major symbolic theme of the series.
I love Delvia 💙 from Russia 🇷🇺
I pretty sure this species inspired the Asari in the Mass Effect universe. Let's discuss 😁
I know nothing about Mass Effect, but yes, let's hear from those who do.
I didn't like that they gave the other Delvian females hair in the Rhapsody in Blue episode. Yes, Delvians have teeth and skin and whatnot and look like animal based creatures, but, I don't know, the hair kind of made the other Delvians look too different from Zhaan. It may have been a personal choice of Zhaan's to be bald, maybe the choice of a priestess - kind of like a monk - (but the males were bald), but the hair just kind of took me out of it for some reason.
Sure, no actress who is only guest-starring is going to shave her head and go all out like Virginia Hey, and a bald cap would've looked too fake, but they could've had the other females wearing headdresses or something to take away from that distraction of a crappy looking bald cap. Or, they could've made the hair more vine-like or something. I don't know, anything a little more "alien" would've worked better. For some reason, the hair on the others just made Zhaan too different in my mind than the others and the others just looked too ordinary.
That's a great comment, thank you. I did also find the hair in the episode really odd. I think your explanation has got to be on target. Especially jarring to me was how wild Tahleen's hairdo was - like an 80s pop singer.
Its weird to me as well, though to me, their hair reminds me of corn silk for some reason. At least that could with the flora aspect.
@@FarscapeContinues Well, it was a symbol of her insanity, indicated, that her mind had snapped.
I got a pack of Farscape comics years ago, but I've never opened them, thinking they'd be worth some later. Are the comics good?
I think they are a mixed bag, but worth reading. I wrote this guide to the comics that doesn't give away any plot elements: farscapecontinues.com/the-correct-order-to-read-the-farscape-comics-why-worth/
@@FarscapeContinues Awesome! Thank you! Can't wait to have a read through!
do you have any Devlian chants? like, including some kind of lyrics with a vid?
I do not, no, but perhaps something to look into, thanks.
I´m afraid, the language is not really constructed. The prayer she recites in the last episode of the 1st season in the ritual before John and Dargo start their suicide mission, it was a poem about a banana tree ...
