8 total acres of testing the no till water. I haven't done this before. So far, it looks better than the previous renter's attempt at continuous insurance claim no till and no chemical beans. Maybe one day I'll get to all no till, but much of the land I rent is because I do tillage and plant non gmo. So far, the non gmo part is surviving the no tillage. The only extra chemical so far is the round up. I am hoping to be done with herbicides on this field for the year and only have to apply more nitrogen. Breaking down all that grass will tie up N for a short while.
Well, we forgot the water, but that's ok, because the rest of planting season went smoothly and quick. Earliest I have ever finished planting. Now I can edit videos because it's Ohio and it always finds a way to rain. Now we can't kick a stranded low. We're not drowning, but plenty dreary and not dusty. Froe cast looks like at least another week of grass growing, wet weather.
We’ve run notill corn on our muck ground for years, so far it’s always worked good for us.
I’m surprised the land owner didn’t let you bale the grass before.

It’s helpful to have corn cob customers like u have durning tough growing seasons
Roundup and Atrazine in the same tank sometimes turn into a gel, then it's real fun to clean all the tank and drainers out😮
I've went from notill back to tillage, including rotary hoe and row crop cultivation , post pass herbicide sometimes, all non gmo corn and soy. No Glyphosate .
Can't wait to see how it turns out, I always love it when farmers try new things out.
Round up has been a saviour to modern farming to control grasses
Hi Jacob I find better planting with no till chopping the grass first with chopper before planting so it's just into stubble rather than long grass with weat
With all the issues you have with wet fields, i think you'll like the no-till. I try to do all no-till & only work ground if i make ruts. I can get into a no-tiĺl field a few days sooner than i can with a tilled field & they seem a lot more solid. They also hold the moisture better for the plant. Trying to see the marker track is my only problem I usually have. I use window weights & a couple lengths of chain wrapped around the marker arm for extra weight.
I have a piece of log chain about 3 feet long right behind the marker disk. It orients the stubble and makes the track more visible.
It takes about 3 years for you to see yield increase in NoTil. but when you calculate cost per acre, you start coming out ahead the first year. The chems are safer than they used to be, rates are lower, and it's cheaper than 4 passes of tillage. Great that you are trying it!
I'm afraid Tha cover crop will sock up all moisture before planting.
@@11T872 To a point it does, but as it degrades it saves moisture in the long term. Forms a light mulch that slows runoff and gives more time for absorbing rain.
I think if you can master the no till it will grow on you. I was like you at one time and loved working ground but the last 2 years ive no tilled corn and have had good luck. Less time needed off from work with no till.
More time needed to work to pay for the chemicals.
I'm not sure there is much difference to be quite honest with you in our particular case. Have you priced field cultivator shovels lately, or diesel fuel? Money saved on a big tractor and maintaining it can go a long way towards buying a decent no till corn planter or some chemicals.
@huntergarmatter5464 you're right, there's not much difference, but it's not like the chemicals can be good for the soil. But, there's no right way.
A pair of ford flat top fenders would look cool on that thing.
I planted no till into a hay field this year also. Having a hard time getting all the grass to die.
Last year I sprayed off a old hay field in spring and direct planted oats. I had good germination but oats struggled coming up in that dead grass stubble. It looked good in the tracks where the tractor had flattened it out. I should have cut or flattened out the whole field.
Herbicide in the fall or mouldboard plow the old ways work best under some conditions if u want a good crop of oats start in the fall in early spring do a final pass to level out the seed bed and plant early

If I rented out land I would leave it completely up to the farmer on how to work it. It seems odd to me to tell them how to farm it.
I have ground that I am required to follow the NRCS conservation plan that the owner was required to have to put the farm in the state preservation program. I doubt that's the case here, but that's one way you can be told how to farm it.
It's the owner's land and a doofus move could put some HEL right into the river,never to be seen again.
I planted corn into worked ground this year and hardly anything came up. We haven't gotten a half inch of rain since the beginning of May. Our beans look about the same. I'm screwed this year
I didn’t think you could plant no till with that planter.
Those 800 series have the off set double disc openers and pretty good weight plus you can set the down force springs more aggressive. Before I got some Yetter row cleaners mine worked fine for no till.
We did put no till coulters on our 800 when we had it.

I believe the rule of thumb is, with the 80 degree tips. You want the boom 13" above the tallest weeds you want to kill in the field.
We have had the same trouble here in MN. We just got rain in the last week other than that we last had rain may 13
Usually, it doesn't stop in Ohio. I'm never praying for rain again.
Yeah, your pump's got parts within a couple hours of shot, better to stop using it and replace them than damage your nozzles. all I got is a D-30 sitting around or I'd offer, not enough flow for that boom.

My no till beans planted on may 25 look a lot better than my neighbors ground pounded beans because he worked all the moisture out and theyve struggled
Would having a cover crop actually help with the dryness this year? Id think it would help cover the soil and hold moisture
For me it held the weeds down,but sucked up some moisture. Kind of a wash,I think.
Those early riser units were made for no-til. I'll take all those wet years over this dry year. The corn is come up at all different times, if it comes up. It's going to be a mess. After this no-til You will be parking that tillage equipment. Plus saving time, fuel, wear and tear on tractors and buying tillage parts. Yo

I thought about making the hay, but figured the organic material would be good for the field.

We don't have enough steers to need the green chop right now.

With no till planting isn't there more grass at harvest time? I'm more into till planting.
The ground is firmer,therefore way less chance of rutting up the field.That's what I like about no till.

My grandpa had been doing no till for a while but we're done with it now. Corn comes up better in tilled ground and yields better. This year has been dry and our corn is looking better than the neighboring no till corn. After all, tillage has been done a lot longer than no till. But everyone has the right to do it their own way.
If you are serious about no-till, preparations begin last fall. No-till is not something you just decide to 'try' after breakfast

Curious to see the difference between the two fields, if there is any difference the way the corn responds to a dry year and yield at the end of the season. Assuming it's the same variety

@@boehmfarm4276 So you're keeping records? The bottom line will tell the story. You won't need as good a crop to get a good bottom line because the expense of tillage isn't there.

No till no good your yield will go down over the next few years all that compaction does make crops to be stunted and there’s more water run off when not tilled

Just trying to help, next time run gromoxone with your 28%. Glyphosate and liquid nitrogen antagonize. Not saying it won’t work obviously it does just that the gromoxone will do better in my opinion

End of the video has an update from a week ago. Right now, the rows are finally noticeable from the road. Dead grass really hides some stuff.

The landowner becomes an expert at no till after years of letting this soil go to grass and weeds so annoying
That mess should have been mowed, rolled with a plow then heavy disced
Spending the time and fuel when at the end of the year, it’ll probably be the same as no till.
