In 1879, Thomas Edison gave a demonstration of his workable lighting system at his Menlo Park laboratory. His larger plan was to electrify one square mile of Lower Manhattan. On December 20, 1880, Edison hosted a dinner to convince city politicians that his disruptive plan would work.
