- Don't get off the backroads in Alabama! Or maybe, you should!
So in March of 2023, I took a major road trip throughout the deep south and a big part of the trip was criss-crossing throughout the great state of Alabama.
The goal was to get an up close look at how folks in Alabama live their lives. And the rule was - no highways. Cause you don’t get to know the real Alabama going 85, do you?
I’m gonna take you on a little journey. Together, we’re going to explore all kinds of Alabama. I think you’re going to learn a lot more about this state. I know I did.

You are only fooling those who aren't paying attention -- you aren't funny or endearing. Keep with your snide BS , it will catch up to you.
Cool video.
Don’t get me wrong I do love your videos. Keep up the good work.
Oh my late grandma lived 5 minutes away from coon dog cemetry it is real and does exist. I live about 30 minutes away currently unfortunately lol.
Phenix City here.
We moved to Alabama almost 2 years ago from frozen WI and LOVE it here. The people are wonderful and even a passing stranger on the hiking path turns into a 15 minute chat. Southern hospitality is real and we embrace it. And the food !!!
I’m glad you are enjoying Alabama. God Bless
Nice to hear pleasant comments on Alabama, live south of Butler County in Red Level. Retired here 5 years ago from Seattle, no need to explain why.
You aren't from Seattle you liar, you are from Federal Way or Auburn. There is trash, junk and tires dumped all over Alabama. Rural states are dumps, including toxic waste.
I know Red Level well. I graduated high school in Opp. I retired in Montgomery.
You could not have done better. Seattle has things but too many people per square inch as they say, living in Tri Cities for 32 years getting too big as well.
Looking to leave California as I am getting closer to retirement.
@@jonheredia8789
Stay in California you voted for that crap government. Keep it there
Sweet home Alabama where skies are blue. Cool song! 😎
True ! :)
💀💀💀🎵🎶🎼🎵 SWEET HOME ALABAMA. LYNYRD💀SKYNYRD🎸🎸🎸
Nick like to see the areas you cover. When I go on the road it helps me fiqure out alot if the time if I should go off the highways.
Northeastern Alabama is omg effing beautiful beyond belief... & the rest isn't too bad either...
The Amish use Old School Farm Equipment draw by horses and mules....think about this Old School costs much less than Modern Tractors that force farmers to finance. They are incredibly expensive, farmers get rooted out of business by excessive borrowing and financing.
Mr. Johnson:
Tks. much.
x 0:01 Awesome intro, that mule and plow would be fun to use!
x 4:40 That is a really cool setting!
x 5:33 That is a cool drag strip!
x 10:55 My first little league baseball team was called the Burwell Livestock Market, the business looked very similar to this!
x 18:11 Deep-fried apple pie looks good!
x 21:19 That is a really cool hat!
I should wear that hat more!
@@NickJohnson It's very iconic!
Your occupation is really interesting! I love road trips
"And thats s a good thing".
Great content nick!
Im in downey idaho but i have family in The country you are touring. Maybe ill retire to Alabama.
I love seeing churches on the American landscape the bigger the cross the better
@NickJohnson you should have visited West Blocton Alabama blink and you miss it
Shhhh. We're trying to keep 'bama secret from the libs trying to move here. Nothing to see here folks.... Move to Colorado... Have a nice day.
Keep up the cool videos!
great job Nick not telling Alabamans you’re originally from California 😂
Thank you Nick for cutting Alabama some slack. We get beat down so much! This was a very good representation of how most of the state is.
I have worked in Alabama many times as a professional driver. It's ok with me...
I grew up in Cullman. It's a great town. I had an amazing childhood there
Alabama is great, hidden gem
My fiancee was going to move to Pollard and a friend lives in Wetumpka. I saw those areas and I really thought it was beautiful. Montgomery has nice old areas and Birmingham has a great remodeled downtown. I was ready to move there and excited about it. He ended up going to Nashville but I loved Alabama.
I've traveled all across this country so much I should've been a trucker. You can't find more a more down-to-earth willing to help you out spirit than the people in Alabama. I ended up there for a while by accident and I'm glad I did. The people there taught me a lot about what it means to be a human being. I wish I could be more specific online, but you can't talk bad to me about Alabama. I just won't hear it, one side or another. YMMV, but they all showed me acceptance and kindness, didn't matter what shape I was in (and I wasn't in a good situation at the time). I'll take that with me for life.
Roll Tide to that.
Wow! I've experienced the exact opposite
You musta got on their bad side somehow.@@nelliesfarm8473
You don’t already know how to be a human being? Smh
Glad you've got everything figured out.@@Rick-rd9uu
The Rattlesnake Saloon looked like the safest place to be in Alabama during tornado season.
The northern part of the state has a lots of hollers like that. Cool and comfortable during the summertime.
I live close enough to go but the snakes can have it!
It's only open part time.
SAY WHAT YOU WILL. IT'S PLACES LIKE THIS, THAT KEEP America safe! THANK YOU SOUTHERNERS. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
???
There's something about your videos that lightens my mood. You listen and intuitively encourage people to share their core values. Many of the people you talk with feel like a friend from my past when folks were down to earth and just themselves. Particularly in Arkansas and Alabama. Reassuring to see that the church is still important in the life of these small communities. Mappy's takes are on the mark and always make me smile ( and he always made me laugh out loud when he shot his gun out west). Anyway, thanks for making it possible for me to go along on this ride.
I love Mappy too Janet!
Church's built around a false image of Christ as being white😊
I'm 77yo now. Always wanted to see the South. Ty Nick for these video's as it's the only way I'll ever see it now 😢 ❤ 😊
My wife and I live in the beautiful town of Gulf Shores, Alabama. Our home is 6 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico (in part, thanks to your videos). We love it here!
I go there every year..There and Perdido Key Fl...
You moved because of a video?
@NickJohnson it played a role. We lived in Hawai'i for six years, up until a certain event involving useless masks came along. We would watch your videos constantly. It reminded us, especially during that time, that there are places back on the mainland that weren't so restrictive of one's freedom the way Hawai'i was at the time. Ultimately, we moved here in 2022. We thoroughly enjoy your videos. Thank you for your excellent work.
@theraptureisnearbelieveinj448 Hawai'i was the worst. It was like Jim Crow 2.0 when it came to their tyrannical mandates. Let's put it this way, any state government that allocates 150k in taxes to purchase robot dogs used to seek out homeless that weren't jabinated is freaking scary.
@@theraptureisnearbelieveinj448 Amen!
Somethings I learned by living in the south. The people are wonderful. The humidity is unbearable. I ended up in Idaho for the last 35 years where the people are wondeful and the humidity is very low.
ya if ur white
Friend in Idaho says being over run by Californias…..
Facts. Boise was my favorite city I ever lived in.
@michaelthomas9440goddamned right
Rattlesnake Saloon sure is interesting looking. I'd like to go there. And stay in a cabin. And sit on a rocking chair at the lodge.
Seems like some really nice people in Alabama.
Thanks Nick for your enjoyable and never boring videos. When I watch your channel the time goes by too fast.
Aww okay! ❤️❤️
I grew up in Cullman. Its the kind of town where as a kid you can walk to the local cafe with your friends and then see whats theyre selling at the dollar general without a parent around. Great place to live
I live about half an hour from Cullman…
@@sharonhutchins5784 oh cool bet you've been to the All steak a time or two
HERE IN ONEONTA , ALABAMA !!!!!!
Nick many thanks for your videos. I am from Northern Europe but you have taught me to see the good and the bad that my teachers at school could not teach. The country is so very pragmatic. Thanks for catching a glimpse of it and hope to see it for myself.
My wife and I live in the beautiful town of Gulf Shores, Alabama. Our home is 6 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico (in part, thanks to your videos). We love it here! Let's be accurate about something here...there are black people who are anti-white here, too. Being black and living in Southern AL I've met more than a few. That said, I've met some great people, regardless of race. You get what you put out, if you're an a-hole you'll attract a-holes (kind of a universal law). The opposite is also true, of course. Great video! Come down to Gulf Shores and enjoy the white sugar sand beaches and Royal Red shrimp!
Royal Reds are darn good!
@@Matt_from_Florida Yes, indeed!
It's interesting Nick only interviewed white folks
Alabama is seriously underrated!
it's a hidden gem
Shhh! Don't tell anyone.
If that's the nicest neighborhood @12:55 in Alabama then it's definitely not underrated
Its not. There's tons more that are better looking.
Depends on where you are
Thanks for another great video Nick. I get to see another part of the USA that I've never been to before. People in Alabama sure seem friendly and down to Earth. Country folk that love to hunt and fish. The farmer with the horse plough was priceless.
Beautiful Alabama back country easy living little towns with NO rat race BS! Yet...😁
I was in the army from 68-70, the worst years in 'Nam. I fondly remember a lor of southern boys particularly in the 101st Airborne Division. Strangely, I can't recall even one, from New York.
There was probably nothing very distinguishing about the NY guys. That's why you forgot
Hey Nick, your videos are always interesting. Great work.
So, of all the places you’ve visited, what at your top choices for all around nice cities to live???
It seems like you were impressed with Boise, for example.
Fort Worth!! Omaha, Sioux Falls, Greenville Sc, Raleigh, KCMO, Grand Rapids, Charlottesville and more!
Aw, I love Robert and his little farm and donkey 🤗. ❤ I was not meant to be born up north lol. I am a country girl at heart, I ride horses and love gardening and outdoor work. ❤ Alabama 😊
As a Moulton native was really cool to see us mentioned, our businesses and economy are growing and will continue to grow rapidly the next 10 years with First Solar Inc coming. I really enjoy your videos
Very cool!
Moulton? As in Highway 157? You guys are above Birmingham and on the way to Muscle Shoals.
@@m.scottreeder yes you’re correct, the intersection of Highway 24 and highway 157
Highly enjoy these adventures into the back woods and off track parts of our beautiful country! There are certainly more than a few folks out there who could use some Good Deeds and Good Things!
"How America used to be, how America should be." THAT quote hit a bullseye! 🎯
Born in Alabama and still live here although not in the same area,I don't recommend it but you made it look decent. My grandfather used to plow like that man and I haven't seen it done that way in many many years so pretty cool to see someone still does it that way
I am in my late seventies raised on a farm outside Gadsden Ala. We plowed with a mule until I was in the 1st grade and upgraded to a
Sears Bradly Davis walk behind, followed by a Ford 9n. I retired in East Oklahoma, and still garden every year. Container mostly now. LOL Loved the folks in Alabame, but had to leave for the draft back in 1966, and only return for weddigs and funerals. Still love to visit.
I agree with the woman who didn't want to be on camera. "Everybody should put God First In Their lives!"
I’m in country Victoria Australia mate & we have a fella from Alabama in my little town who is a top guy 🇦🇺👍
I've lived on both coasts and the Midwest. I've been to 5 continents and a dozen or so countries. I drove 3,500 miles west, with 3 cats and my wife in the car and 4 cats, plus wife, heading 3,500 miles back east. I'm "sub-rural". I mean, it's full of farms but also town shopping areas. Quiet and peaceful. Beautiful and full of wildlife. Sometimes deer scratch themselves on my house, and when the owls chat, the coyotes yip, because they can't reach the owls. Turkeys, beaver, bear, and all types of critters. Farm stores with milk from cows that I wave to on my commute. It is really wonderful. My house was named "Slice of Heaven" by a friend from the city, he's like a brother. I've known him since 1986. The joy on his face, from walking around my woods was heart warming. He is in the city, but he was raised in the suburbs. Everyone needs to get out and into nature. It's good for you.
no protesters, homeless tents, political conflict and tensions they have problems like everyone else but it's contained
Thanks Nick watch allot of your videos and you did a great job. Lived in Bama all my life and it’s not bad and yes most of the people are kind but we do still have some issues with our education system in some cities or racial problems. Overall Alabama is a great state and a decent place to live and you came at the right time. The summers here are BRUTAL hot…
Years ago I worked on ships when I first got out of high school. Most of the deck crews were from the South somewhere. It seems like the best people I met were from mobile AL.
I just love northern alabama ❤ so much southern hospitality.
I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. I could go downtown at night, alone, have a good time, go home, without ever being raped or killed. How many places like that can you name?
I live in a suburb of Birmingham. It has gotten pretty bad at present time with shootings and other crimes…
I live in Texas. Alabama sure looks like a good place to live.
Thank you Nick, I pictured Alabama so differently. Beautiful State💜
I live in the UK but I’ll be moving to Alabama in the next two yrs and this clip is a good pointer 👍
Don’t come to bham, it’s bad as hell here now
Sweet home Alabama!
Where the skies are so blue
I just moved to Huntsville 3 months ago...and I can attest, Huntsville IS NOT like the rest of Alabama! It's expensive but nice. I'd probably like one of those smaller towns.
Huntsville < Birmingham Suburbs
Huntsville < Baldwin County
Huntsville < B'ham Metro
He mentioned Prattville, and said it was nice. He didn't do it justice. When I was finishing up from Air Force officer school in Montgomery, my parents were coming from Pennsylvania for my graduation. I looked around Montgomery and thought, "No way I want my parents here!" Yeah, I did see some nice parts, but overall, I thought Montgomery was a dump. It's especially bad around the base. So I booked my parents a hotel in Prattville. It's a beautiful town. I also bought them tickets to see a play at their big Shakespeare theater. It's quite impressive. And the theater is surrounded by these sprawling gardens. My dad and I weren't so into the gardens, but my mom liked it. If it's not too far from where you live, I'd recommend checking out the town.
@skyyyrose I for one did not bring any bad politics here lol. Unfortunately ur right about the prices going up. Huntsville is already way more expensive than most other places in AL I've been. Most of the folks I run into seem to be from somewhere else too.
@@ressljs thx! I'll absolutely check it out!
@@skyyyrose yea, it's getting crowded as hell here.
When I was around 16 my parents because of work, told my little brother and I that we were leaving California and moving to Alabama. I thought my life was ruined. Fast forward a few years and I graduated HS in Alabama and was completely in love with the state and her people. After HS I joined the military and never made it back to Alabama, I settled back in California where most of my family lived. I look back fondly on those two years I lived in Alabama and wouldn't trade that time for anything.
Still counting the money on Tuesday 🙂 I like the older neighborhoods with the rolling hills.
Montgomery is not the biggest city it’s Birmingham and Huntsville 🤣🤣🤣
That was an awesome video, the kind of areas I love. Call em hillbillys or whatever they have values and they exercise their kindness with others. I was astounded and almost think I was watching a movie or something. Thankyou
Amen to Alabama greetings from Philippines!
great video, boy there's is nothing like the South!!!! I miss it so much. 45 yrs ago when I lived in NC a man plowed the adjoining field with his mule. He would grow crowder peas and he was at least in his 70's or 80's.
Just buy urself a decent patch of land by the crick and work the land. And get a mule. All good.
Oh my God- I'm obsessed with robert 😍 what a sweet, old man.
Rob's 40 acres and a mule ❤️ I could easily live in Sweet Home Alabama
Mm...if you visited during the height of summer heat, you might not think so.
Alabama is part of Dixie tornado ally , in the spring they have some years some of the worst weather conditions ever!
A+ video!
Very helpful getting another look at Alabama!
I'm from NZ (New Zealand)
Gee, Alabamba looks cool. Very picturesque!!😊
It is!
I live in South Central Tennessee, closer to AL than Nashville off I65, I used to see a few women down in Huntsville, it's a really great place, if I wasn't planning on spending at least half my time down in Brazil with my new girlfriend AL would probably be where I was looking for some reasonably priced remote land.
I always thought Alabama had the nicest smooth road's in the country.
Pop's cafe was dialed in.
You know what I noticed? Is that you made alot of videos about Alabama something about Mobile, Montgomery, over the years. I am happy that you appreciate the uniqueness, and wierdness that this state provides.
From Alabama now. Love it here! Thank you so much for your videos!!
You are so welcome Karen!
19:31: Mwuahahahahaha! Twerking on a moving Chicago Police Department vehicle. Good choice there Nick.
My nephew was in the Army over there. He went into Alabama he was there for a couple years and he did not want to leave
The fact that I could sell my house now and afford 4 of those homes at 13:43 just about almost destroyed me. Good videography Nick!
Come on back & visit Athens in Limestone County. Its the fastest growing in the state. Honestly, I wish it would stop...Huntsville Al. is what keeps the Tn valley alive. You have Redstone Arsenal, Space & Rocket Center, etc...alot of money in Huntsville. Loved your sense of humor! Great vid!
Trailer parks cause tornados.
The farmer and his mule, get this born in 1940. And still plowing the farm by hand. HARTY MAN 83
Ok so they're is money coming in from somewhere seeing that theres NEW housing 🏡🏡🏡 devlopment going up. I have NO problem with the chruches even that funny cowboy chruch ,hell i'd like to go see that shit too. The animal's are cool 🐑🐮🐼🐮🦆🦌🐷. Food looked pretty decent Nick im guessing it tasted alright ,right 🤔🍲 @Nick Johnson
You always say "This is how America should be!" but not sure if sarcastic
British person here
Me and my family have just come back from a road trip to the deep south
And yes we accidentally saw more of Alabama than we thought we would, and we are more the happier for it.
The countryside is very much like the southern counties of the UK
We loved travelling through the state
Grew up in a military family/ construction and traveled much of the world. Then in the military myself I discovered Alabama and it’s people. I returned to Alabama in 1988 to live out my life in peace and quiet. The people and rural/ small towns are what America was before it was corrupted by greed, idiots and politicians in DC.
Was very happy you didn’t try to put us down and laugh at our values. Should the people in the Federal Government be as honest and hard working.
Yesterday I heard “Sweet Home Alabama” on the radio and thought to myself, “Nick Johnson is the only reason I know what he means when he talks about Muscle Shoals.” From the Cowboy Church (do they dress like cowboys for church there?) to the fried apple pie (looks kinda like an apple fritter), you show us things in America that no one else does, and from convenience store workers to managers of tractor supply companies, you seek out people whose opinions are rarely shared elsewhere. I hope that people everywhere can get to understand each other better through your videos and grow as people. You’re truly doing God’s work here, Nick. Keep up the great work!
Oh Matt
@@NickJohnsonMuscle Shoals citizen here🎉 glad he you are educating everyone❤
Nice finding that Bear Bryant hat! Gary Busey actually starred in a biographical film about Bryant - titled "The Bear", that came out a year or so after Bear Bryant passed away in the early 1980s.
Politics influence the religion. So true. It should be the other way around.
Hats off to Mr. Rob. Plowing that garden with a MULE. "WOW"
I live in Florida not far from Alabama line and go to Alabama often, I've been up to Birmingham, of course we bypassed it, been up to North Alabama and found it quite nice! I read where Huntsville is larger than Montgomery. I've lived in the country for almost 30 years and being older I like it my daughter and grandkids live here and while they don't hate it they would like to move to bigger cities, I told them when you do you'll be back here when you realize how to much it is! Lol
A return trip to Alabama is a must! First stop, The Rattlesnake Saloon, then off to that drag strip!!
Yes!!! 🚙 🐍
Retired to lower Alabama. Love it farm country .Was raised in Hunterdon co NJ . Use to be farm country.
Northern Alabama is gorgeous. Nice weather. Friendly people.
We'd be living there right now if my wife's family wasn't in Wisconsin (we live in Iowa though).
I have NO idea Alabama is great country and people
Thanks for visiting Prattville, come back and we can show you around.
Ok!!
What a pretty green state , this reminds me of old America
Love your Channel Nick.
You show me places that I would want to stop, and have a Chat.
Thank you .
Glad you enjoy it Daniel!
Remember the Montgomery riverboat brawl folks. It ain't all "love thy neighbor" in Alabama!
Many times it depends on the amount of Wild Turkey involved.
" I bet he doesn't even know what's trending on twitter" LOL..Robert kinda looks a little like his mule Eyore, talks a little like him too. Takes everything in stride. He must be 82-83 and still plowing the field. God bless him. We could use alot more Robert Thompson's in this world. Another great video Nick. You crack me up.
The Restaurant menu had 'Children', listed on it. Between Burger and Salad.
It's Alabamians, not Alabamans.
most of staffs and workers is old people where they should already retired..why is that happen ? where is young people working ?
It's Brain Drain. They go off to college; and then they leave for other States, never to return again. Alabama doesn't have the types of jobs they want to keep them here. My daughter is staying, but nearly every one of her friends from high school has left Alabama behind.
You should have stopped in Scottsboro at the Unclaimed Baggage Store, lots of good deals. I live in GA, but I love going to Alabama, it is a beautiful state.
Next time!
Montgomery is not the biggest city in Alabama. Huntsville proper is the largest and Birmingham metro is the biggest overall.
HEY!...play some Skynyrd!!. This sentence is said a ton of times every day in Allybama.
I only like sweet home Alabama sincerely Frank in Albuquerque 🇱🇷🍺👋

Next trip, visit Cheaha and Desoto State parks. Ft. Paine is nice too. Alabama is the end of the Appalachian Mountain chain and has some pretty waterfalls and mountain views!
Wish we had 400k houses like that here. I don't even know how they build them for that if they are new?
Also, property taxes in Alabama are some of the lowest in the nation. It is the sales taxes that you have to watch out for.
Alabama has the lowest minimum wage in the country.
@@Curlyblonde minimum wage is irrelevant now. You pay a job for minimum wage you won't even get one 16 year old to apply in any state.

Prattville is very nice. I was considering taking a a job for the state in Montgomery, and I would have lived in Prattville if I took it. Ended up in Birmingham, which I also really like. Birmingham is really developing into a decent city.
