    This is such a fab video Lauren! I started post exercise stretching my horse this year after visiting a horse physio and I found it has made such a difference to her flexibility - especially how mobile her shoulders and hips are! Our routine only focuses on her shoulders and hips so I don't have any neck/back exercises in our routine - I'm definitely going to add these in! Be interesting to see if she struggles with them! xx

    A really nice stretching video, thank you for sharing some of your knowledge with us. I have a young mare I was advised to do simple stretches and massages with to help rehab her after bad farrier work left her very sore and wonky but I've gotten a bit lax. Some really good points you've made here. It wasn't mentioned to me to make sure she was weight bearing on all four legs, I'm going to give it a go today and check she stretches smoothly and doesn't cheat :D

    these types of stretches have done wonders for the stiffness in my horses left shoulder and I would love to try them on my new horse too, however even after feeding him treats just once he has started to constantly search for them and even started biting (as I found out the hard way haha). I know you mentioned covering your hand as you feed them to protect yourself from getting bitten but feeding him still means that he bites while you handle him - is there anyway around this, or any other way I can still do stretches with him? loved this video, very informative :) I've had equine physiotherapists out to look at my horse before and she showed me how to do these stretches but never explained them to me like you have, thank you :)

    • @LaurenAllport
      @LaurenAllport  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      thank you :D the only thing I think you can really do is be clear to him that he is not allowed to bite. He must respect your personal space, any horse can learn this with time and consistency. i.e never let him smell your pockets and lick you etc. There must be a consequence if he invades your space and bites, i.e a light tap on the shoulder to show him this is not okay. Its hard to give more advice without seeing the horse. I hope this helps! There are other stretches you can do that don't involve food. I will do a video on these in the next few weeks :D

    Great video, thankyou. You mention not to stretch a cool body to prevent injury, do you always require a warm up beforehand? Is that even after the flexibility is evident in the horse? So does that mean not using the stretches as part of a warm up?Even though you mentioned stretching both before & after riding?? Thankyou in advance! Best wishes 💐🐴🙏

    • @LaurenAllport
      @LaurenAllport  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can stretch so long as the horse has been moving in the paddock before or hand walked for example (5 mins minimum)! General rule never stretch a cold muscle ☺️

    Wonderful video, please do post more like this!
    Question: Can you talk more about the eating from the hay net? At my barn we use slow feed hay nets set at about mid neck-shoulder height. Our vet really praises the benefit of a slow feed system but I know that eating off the ground is beneficial too. What would you recommend? Thanks!

    • @LaurenAllport
      @LaurenAllport  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you :) I will do more videos like this soon!
      I personally feed 2 of my horses from the floor as it is more natural. However River is fed from a low tied haynet (this can be dangerous with some horses so I advise caution) but she is very greedy so I have to slow her down when she eats haha.

    That thing about the position of the head was very interesting, I've not heard about it anywhere else. I think my horse tends to cheat with that, but can you elaborate on it? And how can I make her stretch correctly? I try to change the position that I want her head to reach, for variety, but is there any angle that is bad/less good for the horse to stretch, like too low or high to the side? Love watching your videos!

    Hi, this is a great video, cant wait to try these out. My horse is a 4yo French Trotter X TB and after nearly every time we trot he pulls and tries to stretch his neck out while walking. Amazing video! The horse I'm riding is 18 years old and he's very stiff on some days. I think he could really benefit from this but I have a question. I think it would be the best idea to try the stretches twice a day. If I do them before riding, I need to walk him for about ten minutes right? So that his muscles will be warmed up properly. I mean I'm riding him for 15 minutes just walking every time I start to make sure that he's warmed up nicely and I cool down for about 15 minutes as well. So he's being ridden properly I just want to make sure that I'm doing things right! Thank you in advance!

    Very informative, thanks!
    I have a question concerning the bow you practiced with Boo in the beginning: Is this considered to be benefitial in regards to a horse's back? I ride and work with a 20 year old horse with quite a weak back and would like to introduce some trick training. However I am not sure weither he is fit enogh to accomplish the bow/weither it is good to strengthen his back. He can touch the ground between his front legs with his nose, but not lay down the leg or rock his weight back.
    Any advice, especially on the effects of the bow concearning the back, is very much appreciated. :)

      Try a corner so there's a wall behind as well as beside.

    • @LaurenAllport
      @LaurenAllport  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      do it in the stable with one side against the wall and their bum also against the wall :D make sure you arent twisting your body as this can invite the horse to move without you knowing! :)

    Great video, learnt so much. Just one thing I am Unsure on is you said at the beginning to make sure their muscles are fairly warmed up before doing these stretches but then said to do it before and after riding? Would you advise walking the horse around in hand for 5-10minutes then do stretches and then ride and do the stretches again after?

    • @EddiesGun91
      @EddiesGun91 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      equiivickie I said in the video (i think,atleast i meant too haha) that you can walk for 5 / 10 mins before stretching if you wish to do it before and after riding :)

    what would you advise with horses that are treat sour?

    • @LaurenAllport
      @LaurenAllport  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i advise you do them with caution. You must be clear to the horse that he is not allowed to bite. He must respect your personal space, any horse can learn this with time and consistency. i.e never let him smell your pockets and lick you etc. I would limit hand feeding and ONLY do it when you stretch the horse. There must be a consequence if he invades your space and bites, i.e a light tap on the shoulder to show him this is not okay. Its hard to give more advice without seeing the horse. I hope this helps a little!
