I suspect OEM GAC v12 parts are hard to come by. I suppose a different 650 hp aero-based V12 or commercial diesel might be adapted to fit but bet some obscure part would cost too much or used highly toxic materials.
As this shows a struggle on level cement pavement, I can well imagine how challenging it would be to retrieve a battle damaged vehicle out on the rough. Even if the tracks were in good shape, hills and mud would present a big challenge.
Having been involved in MBT recoveries from wadis to frozen lakes I can attest that the M88 series can handle what ever mother nature or a careless tank crew can dish out.
That brings back memories from my days in the German Army. I was a Recovery Troop Leader and Commander of a M88A1GE for about a year and a half. Thats a older and slightly modified version of a M88 for the German Army. Those were some great days. Thanks for uploading this.
Every time I see a M88A2 all I can think of is "HERCULES! HERCULES! HERCULES!" From the Nutty Professor bwahaha! Awesome video Sofi! Keep up the great work!

@@darnit1944 I think that M-103s did see some service. I can't remember the name of it, but I remember reading in a book that some Marine Corps armored units still had M-103s during the Gulf War. That '88 and the ground crew had a hella workout that day! Thinking of the force it took to snap that tow lug. Still would love a tour of the museum (HINT, HINT)!
continuously surprised by the quality of your content. The T29/T34 are two of my favorite classic American heavy tanks. I definitely enjoy destroying tanks with one shot using this beast's 120mm in War Thunder. I'm always here for more tank content!
Interesting that the Humvee at 5:06 still has its up-armored doors fitted stateside. Those are heavy but they provide excellent protection from bullets and shrapnel. It also has the deep wading trunk more commonly seen on USMC Humvees.
The kinetic energy stored in a 60t MBT moving with 5km/h or 3 mp/h roughly is the same energy as ~2l Diesel fuel contain. But the diesel got burned in an engine with only ~33% efficiency, so you need at least to put 5l into the engine to get the that energy into the tank AND you also need to overcome the whole friction resistances of the threads and all the other moving parts AND it takes some time to get the tank up to 5 km/h, so overall it will take 5-10l of diesel to get a 60t tank to 5km/h. There is a reason, why a tank with over a metric ton of fuel capacity can only move 150km/ 100 miles through rough terrain...
I'm glad to see the return of the googly eyes on the mantlet. I'd definitely have them on my tank if I was a tanker. They're not as cute on just a helmet. Anyone else notice that poor MBT-70 sitting low to the ground and partially covered in the background? It's looking for an indoor home as well.
It was funny to see the little blue airplane tug in there, because the big flat version of that, the one that tows 747's, that's what Cameron used as an APC in the movie Aliens.
Another awesome vid! Thanks Sofi' That m88 is an absolute beast! Epic content as usual. Been a sub since 1k. Great to see you are well on the way to 100k.

Track tension alright on that M88A2? I thought they're gonna pull the brakes on the T29 once it's on wood panels, and just slide it around on the smooth conrete.
Those are some damn heavy chess pieces to be moving about. Great work Ladies and gentlemen. TH-cam Music is also too often overdone. Sofilein''s voice is the only music this video needed. The tank engine sound is more part of the atmosphere. Our Hostess wisely lleft things mostly natural.
2:40 "Why do you have to tow it so SLOW?" "Welp, when something that massive gets up a head of steam, it ain't exactly gonna stop on a dime, ya dig?" The sound of that track chewing on the tow bar is almost as cringe-inducing as watching someone drive a tank sideways down a steep grade. (Points if you know where that tends to lead.)
could you enable subtitles? It would help a lot to those not fluent in English and would certainly increase the reach of the video. Thank you and great job
So what is the procedure for preparing a vehicle that has spent so much time sitting for towing? Do they need to do work to the transmission, suspension, and tracks beforehand?
It was designed with hydro pneumatic suspension kind of like the Swedish S-tanks, so the reason it’s sitting like that is because that’s the position the suspension was last left in.
I agree, that M88 is just about the coolest anything I've seen. It looks like it's right out of The Thunderbirds. You could see when he was towing the first T29, he paused before the first turn, but then spun his tracks trying to get going again - leaving some awfully big black lines on the tarmac. I expect that the typical recovery plan at the time for if one of these heavy tanks was stuck was to use a second one of these tanks to tow it.
It's so much of a struggle because they are trying to preserve the concrete. If this was a field, it would be much more straight forward.
