  • @NichaelCramer
    @NichaelCramer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +52

    Some problems:
    1] As other commenters have mentioned, notice that at the very beginning both balls are on the same end. Yet “somehow” the machine starts rocking in the opposite direction.
    2] Similarly, notice that once the machine is rocking it only *starts* to change its tilt once the balls are all the way to the end (I.e. once the balls bump against the end-stops; in short, no smooth transition from one direction-of-tilt to the other, which would be expected if the tilt was actually controlled only by the location of the moving balls.)
    3] Even more problematic, over the course of the video, if you watch closely, the directions of the balls’ motion drift “out of synch”. In other words there are very brief instants where the the balls are moving in opposite directions. (This becomes more obvious after about 0:50 )
    4] Finally, as other commenters have pointed out, go to full-screen mode and look carefully under the right end of the board. You can see something moving under there. (It’s a little hard to see exactly, but some folks have suggested a string, others a rod.)

    With most perpetual motion -like machines, you can kinda see how the rationalization works. I don't see it at all in this thing. When the balls initially roll to the right side, they should _stay_ there and the whole framework should stay there: the whole thing's center of mass is resolutely stuck on the right.

    • @kallewirsch2263

      The (incorrect) reasoning is, that because of the criscrossed feet the balls push on the left side of the seesaw when they are on the right side of their ledges and vice versa.
      Obviously this is bullsh*t, since if you sum the forces up the seesaw has to support the center of gravity. E.g. if you fix the feet to the seesaw it not only transfers a perpendicular force but also a torque.
      What i'm wondering about is the motivation for spreading such nonsense.

  • @Surms41
    @Surms41 8 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    LOL He puts his hands on the table so he doesn't get moved by his tilting set.
    If you look when he starts it, the entire set around the camera is tilting, and then he stabilizes himself, though you can still see his upper torso swaying the direction of the ball every time it moves.
    Either that or the wires under it.
    Such bullshit.

  • @LokiScarletWasHere
    @LokiScarletWasHere 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The apparatus moves opposite the balls. It’s moving opposite the leverage. An outside force has to be applied for this to happen.
    The apparatus is moving before the balls begin to move in the direction it’s moving, so the balls clearly aren’t moving it.
    Even if you reason that the outer legs of the apparatus attach to the inside of the opposite side of the seesaw, that just doesn’t matter once all the legs are attached, as once the apparatus is securely attached, the whole thing acts like one object that the balls are pressing on. What attaching the legs to the opposite side actually does, is provide different forces to stabilize the apparatus on the seesaw, keeping it from say, falling off the seesaw, falling over bringing the seesaw with it, or breaking from the force of the balls.

    Im a mechanical engineer. The reason why people not knowledgeable in strength of materials think this might work is because they dont know how forces transmit. The ball's weight acting on each oblique beam not only results in a pressure on the tip equal to the weight, but also a flexural stress superimposed on it which in some parts of the tip's surface contact area with the see-saw actually causes traction, and the wholr thing adds up to be indistinguishable from the ball just resting right above the see-saw at the position it would be if there wasnt a silly structure between them.
    If you wanna try it at home, find something shaped like this:

    Two holes are drilled into the edge of the board facing the guy. When he very carefully sits the board down, he is sliding those holes over two rods that are sticking up past the rear edge of the table and bent at 90 degrees. These rods are actuating the rocking motion. As Nicholas Olszko pointed out, you can easily see the reflection of the rods in the surface of the table in the shadowed area under either end of the board. Its entirely fake- build one and this contraption won’t rock even once without the hidden rods actuating it.

    You can see a black cable in the table reflection, right below the right corner (from the viewer's perspective) of the device every time that corner goes up (for example, exactly in 00:50, 00:51).
    If you check earlier - before the device is set in motion - there's no such reflection.
    The left side of the device is a bit longer, causing it to go down on its own weight when "released" (either that, or that side has extra weight). My bet is he's controlling the device with his left foot, pulling the string down when he wants that corner (right corner from viewer's perspective) to go down, and releasing when he wants the other corner (left corner from the viewer's perspective) to go down (which unsurprisingly matches his slight body movement).
    PS: if you stand up and try doing the same movement, moving your left foot up and down quickly, as in the end of the video, you'll notice it's very hard for your body not to move at all. That's the reason why you see the body moving as well.
    Edit: correction you can see the left side cable at 00:34, so there's a cable on both ends.

The only way anyone would be fooled here is because it rocks back and forth so quickly that you can't catch the flaw in the idea of this machine.
    I think there is a 2nd person under the table who is tapping this back and forth with their fingers. Notice that the device is placed right at the very edge of the table, giving someone underneath easy access to it. Many here have claimed they see a string and that is possible, too. I see what looks like a string but it also could just be a reflection. Notice that the camera is placed in a way that you can't see all the way under the base board to see what is really going on. Either way this isn't that difficult to reproduce.

    There are some perpetual motion machines that do 'work' but will eventually stop overtime due to friction and other factors, there was this one guy who makes these cool woodworks and he hangs it up on a wall, and once you spin a certain piece it will go on seemingly forever, they can go on for hours or even days before eventually stopping, its these types of perpetual motion machines that while they don't work, will be a wonderful masterpiece to see moving on your wall when given some of your energy. This one is just not good.
    Also I don't believe in perpetual motion, I just think its cool to watch certain machines that almost work go on for extended periods of time before friction takes its toll on them.

    Although this is a very clever machine, it is not a perpetual motion machine. It will eventually stop because energy is slowly being lost from friction between the ball and the wooden frame, and also from sound.
    A similar see saw mechanism can be made using electrons in a wire, by connecting a fully charged capacitor to an inductor. When you connect the two together, the capacitor will charge the inductor, creating a magnetic field that stores the energy from the capacitor.
    Once the electrons stop moving, the magnetic field surrounding the inductor will collapse, which will create a force that will charge the capacitor again.
    Once the magnetic field surrounding the inductor is gone, the capacitor will discharge again, creating a magnetic field around the inductor that stores the energy from the capacitor.
    Once the electrons stop moving, the magnetic field surround the inductor will collapse, that will charge the capacitor again. Once the capacitor is fully charged, it will discharge again, creating a magnetic field around the inductor, which stores the energy from the capacitor.
    You would think that this would go on forever, but it won't, because energy is slowly being lost from the system from heat generated by the friction on the electrons moving through the wire, just a energy is lost due to the friction of the ball rubbing against the wood of the see-saw apparatus in this demonstration.

      @sermerlin1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +c6786 dude... are you for real? You really think this works on it's own? Do you understand that energy is lost everywhere here? In order something to be perpentual it must not lose energy after the initial given energy to start (like he uses his hand to push the green ball to start this motion). First there's shit ton of friction and ball is slowing down considerably that's first energy loss second energy loss is the whole thing moving it is losing excess energy as it goes left right.
      Either magnets are pushing it up down or the table is being lifted.

    • @fenrirgg
      @fenrirgg 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +c6786 It isn't a real movement thing, the machine is moving due two strings at the bottom sides. Apparently the video is to show how it should had worked, because it can't work in this reality. Or... it's just trying to fool people, but the strings are very visible.

    • @Wardf
      @Wardf 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +c6786 Yes, it will. There is the most visible point of fraction that makes it lose energy. It is a point where it constantly touch a table.

    Notice when he sets the machine down (before he puts the balls in) the machine balances on the center rod, rather than tip to one side or the other, as would naturally happen. Dead giveaway he has a push-rod system just behind the edge of the table.

  • @Mysticsword
    @Mysticsword 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    From 0:18 to about 0:20 , if looking closely, I can see two small holes at the edge of the table. The guy places the platform of the mechanism carefully with the middle between those two holes and also hiding those holes from camera view. Then when the mechanism is rocking, look closely and can see the reflection on the table where two thin rods would be through those holes to then alternate pushing the mechanism first on one side, then the other. So either someone is below the table pushing the rods accordingly, or the guy standing there could be working it with his feet somehow. Anyways, that's my theory. Still, I give kudos to the guy for being inventive and creative with such devices and vids.

      Le Klinch sure it would. if you put small permanent magnets in the ends of the wood (sunk into the wood) and then you have electromagnets on a timer under the table so that they turn on and off thus pulling and pushing the permanent magnets up and down causing the whole set up to rock side to side.

      @@ST-cy6we I never said there was perpetual motion. You seem to be claiming that there should be *no* motion, and you are wrong. That is a legit device, but it is a novelty like Newton's Cradle. It will eventually stop. There is no trickery involved. It moved exactly when it was supposed to move.
      I was insulting you. You tried to disprove the device by describing exactly how they claim it works.

    Apart from people saying, "It moves wrong," and, "you can see a string," etc., the more frustrating issue is that you can't move the center of mass one way but get the mass to push on the opposite side. That's just not how that works. Imagine sitting in a golding chair that has the legs criss-cross front to back. When you lean back in such a chair, does it put more weight on the front legs? Exactly...

    • @unexpectedTrajectory
      @unexpectedTrajectory 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My point is this isn't something that actually works for a long time but would eventually slow down and stop claiming to be a perpetual motion machine. This is just something that doesn't and wouldn't work AT ALL.
