Genuinely I love this design philosophy. You haven’t really collected something in this game until you’ve proven you got in AND OUT of the situation correctly.
It reminds me of bouldering. When you reach a top in a boulder route, you need to hold it for 3 seconds to prove that you finished it. You can't just touch it.

Honestly that's one of the rare problems with custom maps in this game imo Almost every berry is one that puts you in a safe bubble and puts you bag at the beginning of the room when you grab it, it's nice for the hard ones but it still loses its charm
Maddy is a cruel mistress I love it. She really made Celeste be as hard as it could be, even though dying after collecting a heart is nearly impossible as is
I'm so shocked that if you die in the last jump of 7c you do not respawn at the start of the room. At my gameplay, I was dying inside by tension at that last jump...
i remember being so unreasonably terrifyied of that happening, but now im glad to see it only truly happens if you intencionally dash downwards or something
Fun fact: in variant mode at 160% speed, the time it takes for the game to freeze and the crystal heart to collect is the same as normal speed, but the physics still move at a faster speed. When I played the whole game like that, it made 1B, 3C, 4B, 4C, 6B, and 6C take extra strategy to even beat.
From my own experience the only time that dying via crystal heart collection really matters is when you use the speed up modifier, especially 160% because you fall much quicker thus forcing you to always dash upwards and diagonally to collect majority of hearts, the collection time isn't scaled with the speed. I see it as a bug not a feature as the speed up causes lots of unintentional side effects that don't usually happen at normal speed, but then again it was added for fun and not for serious play.
You guys probably already known but the golden is still count as collected after you grab the heart. As a result, you will respawn at the start of the last room instead of the first room of the chapter (Not a-side heart of course)

also at level 8c you can die from the ice spikes that slowly descend down, but apparently it was so hard for the author to imagine that because of this he didn't do it! 😅😅😅
On b and c sides, breaking the heart would instantly give the player the golden berry. I haven’t tested this out, but I believe that you would still collect the berry before you die.
I was at the end of 8C, bounced on the top of the heart to get my dash back, then dashed down into the heart which lead to my death and it made me think of this video
actually in 2a you can die before the heart is counted as collected, you need to hit a really precise screen transition and the heart noise will not go away until you die, exiting the chapter will say the heart was not collected
