- Shimla doesn't need an introduction. It is probably the most popular tourist destination in India. While I have done quite a few vlogs on tourist places in Shimla, things to do in Shimla, food is something I haven't put much effort into yet. This time I am starting a series on Must-try Food in Shimla.
In this episode, I have tried two of the very old food joints in Shimla. These joints are famous among the locals and I am not sure if tourists visit these. I totally recommend and next time when you are in Shimla, do try it out.

I'm 64 & living in the US for the past 24 years whereby I mean to corroborate that as a 9th & 10th class School kid, I also had been eating Nathu's Doodh Jalebi; not as a Dessert but as a Presccription Drug for "Bad Cold" viz. Nazla Jukham. I had my post-matriculation education in Chandigarh & Patiala whereat whenever I was down with Bad Cold, I used to rush to Simla; first to Nathu Halwai & then to my family in Tuti Kandi (once a remote locality but now with ISBT of Shimla; back then it was spelt SIMLA). Thank you for reminding me of those better old days. Thesedays when I happen to see Shimla, I feel like crying. The very place where I saw the "Moon Rocks brought by Apollo 11" as a School Kid, it's been converted to a Restaurant where they don't even bother to clean the Washroom & still claim it to be an upscale fine-dining Restaurant of Shimla.

This shop has changed drastically in past 4 years. It has become like modern shops - pay in advance and get computer receipt etc, self service ....... all the modern trappings. But just 4 years back, it was just like it was a hundred years ago, old style. Sit comfortably, first eat, drink hot milk with jalebi etc, and get served on table, and then later pay for it. Now too much modern nakaras has somehow lowered the feel good factor of this place completely. I liked the old shop, not the new changes. Same thing with second shop, where they have stopped people sitting and eating inside shop now. Just two years ago, Mehru used to have seating and tables for people to eat inside shop. Now, just buy and get lost. Do not like these commercial changes in Shimla old shops taking place. The children of old owners have studied in English medium schools, and think that having computers and following foreign system like McDonald's style is better, less work and more money, which is actually not liked by customers. The old Indian style was better. More inviting. Now that old warmth has gone from these two shops completely. Even Baljees and Fascination has closed down. Old shops on the Mall are completely changing one by one, and the international brands are taking over like in big Malls in Delhi etc. That homely old feel of family owned shop being run since grandfather time is going away. Many shops on Mall now do not even have name of shop displayed on top of shop entrance, and now just some silly international product name of some jeans or something else is displayed. That old pride in family name of old shop has gone. Sad.
You literally summed up whatever I was thinking. Just look at Sita Ram and Sons, a uncle ji was soo humble and down to earth. But can’t say about his sons who maybe have taken over the business. The kind of innocence is being eroded by the desire to have more and more money .
In short my people have become business oriented. Which is good in one way but… You’ll see this mad rush of commercialisation everywhere in Himachal.
Himachal is not what it used to be 10-15 years back.
It has changed. And only time will tell what we gained and lost. But , innocence is the biggest casualty here.
I think everything went downhill once Baljees closed down. The Mall doesn't feel the same like it used to ever since Baljees. Everything is so impersonal and the shopowners are so rude everywhere. Cafe culture is taking over but it's not the same. Everything is changing but even though change is inevitable and it's supposed to be good...I feel this change doesn't resonate with the homely, cosy, innocent soul of Shimla. It's a town built on the past trying hard to transition into a modern city but it fails to realise that sometimes it's best to just stay where you are, even if it's being trapped in the past.

Really This shop has changed, I last ate jalebi in this shop in the year 1965, the shop is really changed now. Iam 99 years old, i love this shop and planning again to come here, maybe the next year
