    so where do you go to legally own your masters? like why is this not being in answered anywhere online?

    • @Kingjr_0
      @Kingjr_0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You already have your master once you create a song, cause you pick and choose what platform your song should be played on

    • @PhaseVi
      @PhaseVi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes @Lieak Tings is correct. You do not need to go anywhere to legally own your masters. Think of it like this. Say you build a birdhouse in your garage. it's unique and unlike any other birdhouse. You own that birdhouse the moment you build it. The original birdhouse is the master. You don't need to register it anywhere. Now say you want to protect the birdhouse. Well, you can protect the design - you would patent the design and sell the blueprint. However, the original birdhouse is still in your garage. I can make this a lengthy super detailed analogy but I think you get the point. You own it when you create it. If someone wants it - they buy it from you and put it in their yard. This is the equivalent to selling your master.

    If you legally own the sound recording copyright to your song the person who has the session file to your song legally can't do anything with your song without your permission. That's my thoughts on it. Do you agree?

    Thanks for the video! I have a question. I'm a producer and I have a single to be released with an artiste I'm working with. I got the song recorded, and I paid for the song to be mixed by another engineer. It seems that the engineer I paid doesn't understand that I am entitled to the session file after it's completion and believes that the "masters" is only the final mp3 sound recording after it is mastered which I had to advise him otherwise. However, my question is.. when obtaining that completed session file from the engineer that mixed the song, am I entitled to have the session file as is with all the effects that were used and so on? Because the engineer seems to believe that if he hands over the session, that all the effects that were used in the mix should be removed and I would get the session back bare bones. Is that right? Please help with your answer, thank you!

    What happens if I erased the master?

    • @PhaseVi
      @PhaseVi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ouch. You screwed...kinda. You can recut the record and make a new master but your original master is lost forever. You can technically make the final .wav a master. A master is the orginal file that all files are copied from. So if you have that you still have the master. Today, mastered are looked at more holistically as a session file but the technical definition (definition before their were full session files) still applies.

    What can you do if the producer who mixed and mastered said he put everything on your USB and did not and you paid him? Not, to mention that you already had it pre-mixed and pre-mastered and he only put in the finishing touches. I had the copyright with the Library of Congress for the three years I worked on the song. I have called the owner and the producer, paid for the session and to my knowledge, it was on the USB. When I got home it was not there. I talked to the producer who did the mix and mastering he said will send it as soon as he is done with his sessions because they are booked and busy. WOW!

    • @PhaseVi
      @PhaseVi  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ouch. This is just staying on top of it. You gotta watch them slide the session over. Now you have to be patient and persistent. Might even have to book another session for something else just to get this record squared away. But I'll say this. you get more with honey than with vinegar. A smile and positive language go a long way to get what you want.

    Here is a question. Let’s say I live in America but I want to record my music in a country that is more favorable to the artists. Can you explain what that would be a good choice vs bad choice and some examples of places and rights I may get doing that.

    How come here in America we don't or can't own the rights to our music off rip?

    • @PhaseVi
      @PhaseVi  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We do! We just so often give it away without considering the long term impact or knowing how to navigate or negotiate for it.

    • @PhaseVi

      Yes. Selling the Masters is not selling the publishing. He can still claim publishing unless he as that as well.
