A villainess concocts a nefarious plot around her stepdaughter and matches wits with an English gentleman adventurer. With Malcolm McDowell and Eileen Atkins. Michael Jayston stars as Mansel.
One of my favorite Dornford Yates’ novels. So pleased to see a film version, although, watching and listening to the start, am wondering how faithful to the book it will prove to be.
Caught this on BBC Four last night. Interesting and certainly watchable, and replete with ye olde 'derring-do' action sequences. Not the world's greatest fan of the ending though.
The Castle in the trees is Castell Coch in Glamorganshire, IMDB says interiors as well but none of those I've seen so far (I'm about 25 minutes in) are William Burges Castell Coch interiors.
Great British cast having loads of fun hamming it up. Pleasure as always in hearing MJ’s mellifluous tones.
Eileen Atkins giving it the full Bette Davis. And this has got to be one of the biggest roles Pat Gorman ever had!
Such a fun bit of escapism! 🎉❤ thanks for posting!
Cannot believe that's Eileen Atkins -- what a villain! I see and hear a lot of Patricia Hodge in her.

Great movie, great cast, great plot, great ending -- what more can I say?
Good John Buchan style adventure.
I must say Michael Jayston looks YUMMY with a moustache or a beard, while the majority of men don't, no idea how he does it. :) It's his magic.
And the rear view of him in those jodhpurs is none too shabby either.
@@Kokkoz6 And in the uniform 😍
Oh MJ in uniform anytime (excluding him as old policeman in some rustic TV series). Adored him as S Sassoon in Mad Jack.
I like this. It is like Tom is doing this from a comic book hero on what he does.
LOVE It!!!
They've clearly based Vanity Fair's costumes on Marchesa Luisa Casati
Excellent!

Stellar!
Oh I wish there were a dozen more like these to watch!
I rate it 3 / 4 stars (The American star rating). This is a guilty pleasure
A French policeman (Michael Jayston) and a detective (Malcolm McDowell) seek to convict a villainess (Eileen Atkins) for murder in 1924.
And they did it in style!
Spiffing stuff! A key influence on audio serial Filthy '47.
Does anyone know where this was filmed?
The castle exterior. The interiors are somewhere else. The chapel could be st marys Paddington crypt chapel
Strawberry Hill for some castle interiors
@@keithstalker3954 Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham?

The star of Disney's Mary Poppins and this was the first TV production she starred in following the death of her co-star Matthew Garber.
