I actually find that appalling. You never see Meg and Ben outside without shoes on. All that trash buried that pokes through and scrapes, stabs and pokes feet. That's like running around in a city dump. Not only that but they HAVE footwear they just don't care about stuff like frostbite and blood poisoning.

“ fatty Christmas “ what a delightful name for a sensible solution! We too as a family came to the same conclusion as yourselves we don’t need anymore STUFF!!! Christmas is no longer expensive, no more drawn out shopping outings, worries about getting the right presents for people. Instead we give out homemade hampers of goodies that have been gratefully received and have been individually rapped so folks have still had fun unwrapping and discovering what’s inside. We are gradually going over to homemade Christmas material bags to get rid of using paper and can be used each year. The stress has gone and Christmas is now what it should be enjoy each other and enjoying good food. What could be better!! Thank you for letting us enjoy your family and all youdo. I have followed your journey since you sold up and set off on your journey.

...Meg...in addition to being a genius in the kitchen, has non-pariel music selection and vid editing skills. Between she and Ben, with his grasp of metal working/bending/shaping( reminiscent of my observations of same in a shortline railroad shop in deep Sowega, when about Bret's age ) their children, with Buggy "helpin'" Meg, and Ben teaching the welding "class"... are being exposed to the way the world works...which will only make them, well adjusted, informed, and engaged children, teenagers and young adults, from grounded roots!...IMHO....Happy "Fatty" Holidays Hollars! ...and Thank You for sharing it with "us"!

Meg, I'm not going to lie, I could watch you cook all day. You make it look to easy and smooth ( yes I'm a Chef) the rolls, the pies, bean casserole, ducks yum. Ben, you on the other hand is interesting to watch, but honestly, it's all Greek to me 🤪 What a wonderful, inventive idea for Christmas, fixing meals you either haven't had or haven't had in a long time . Your right when my youngest turned 8 I decided that the kids would get $100. 00 cash or one present worth the $100.00, plus they each got a stocking with an ornament, candy, comb/ brush, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc. May you all be blessed this Thanksgiving day. 🦃😊🇺🇲

Fatty 🎄 Christmas reminds me of my 1950's New England childhood. Looking back, it was amazing! My mother would make home made chocolate chip cookies, that oozed gorgeous melted chocolate. Warm cookies and cold milk was so good! She made spritz ccokies, while we sponged stencils of Santa and his reindeer onto the windows with Glass Wax stencils. I was recently given a set one Christmas, so they are still available. What fun!
Dad would flood the side yard for a skating rink for us, while we watched him through the frosted window, enjoying our hot cocoa and marshmallows. If I can recall these wonderful moments, so will your children. Keep making family ⛄🎄❄❄🎀 holiday memories! ~ Diane

Not so long ago pie crust was not your favorite thing Meg ... but I would say you've mastered it!!! Look at that lovely pie crust - it went so smoothly! And a gorgeous chocolate pie! Oh my! Cake too! Your rolls are a work of art ... just lovely! Fatty Christmas is off to a grand beginning! But you always eat so well! Isn't it fun to 'shop' your own grocery store and make meals with the fruits of your hard work! You both work so hard so I'm sure any extra ounces you gain over Christmas will be quickly worn off! Happy Thanksgiving to the Hollar Family! May the Lord continue to bless you and guide you!

We decided to spend no more than $20 and have kind of like a white elephant Christmas. Like you said, there is nothing we really have to have. It's much more important to just be together. We also decided to have sandwiches, or cheese, lunchmeat and chips and cookies. Just focus on our time together. Christmas is about Jesus, and we want to celebrate that.

The commercialization of Christmas has become horrible. We decorate with greens and a few things then instead of “buying gifts” for everyone, we take the money we would spend on that and furnish food for the local food pantry and also donate to some missionary friends of ours to help them spread the Gospel in the European County where they now live. Our Grands and kids love helping sh for the food pantry and look forward to pictures and letters from our missionary friends. So many people hurting this year. Praying all stay healthy and fed well. God bless you and your family. 😃

  • @leannekenyoung

Happy Thanksgiving to you all in the Hollar! I love your idea of a fatty Christmas! Actually I began to get creative years ago with gift giving and instead of opting for the traditional more stuff that most parents would need another house to store it all! I decided instead to give a recipe with all the ingredients that the parents wouldn’t already have onhand and then I would go to their home and help them make whatever the child might enjoy. It was usually a recipe that I was handing down from the generations and was handwritten from the original creator or recipe card file that they had it on with all the splashes and marks that those dear old cards would accumulate over the years. I love old recipes with simple ingredients and easy to follow directions and I especially enjoy inspiring young children to cook from scratch and that is the gift I’m really giving. Of course I always leave the kitchen as tidy or better then I found it and I teach the child to do the same. To me there is no better gift then actually spending time with a child and engaging with them. When you are baking or cooking with them you are teaching reading skills and comprehension and also they learn math and fractions. I think it helps them become independent thinkers and allows them to begin truly learning how to take care of themselves one day. I think a lot of parents are simply too busy and too caught up in the fast food and or packaged foods to worry about making a lot of traditional type meals and foods but I think it’s a very valuable thing to know especially understanding what is in our foods and knowing we don’t need so much chemical preservatives in our food…sorry not to labor the point. I think you all are very very smart!!! No one will ever forget their fatty Christmas!!😂🥰❤️🇨🇦

I like your ideas for Christmas. I stopped giving gifts 15 years ago. These days, I make charity donations in everyone's name; if they have a favourite charity, that's where I give on their behalf. For the kids, I give Oxfam gifts, where you can donate a piglet, or some ducks or chickens, or seeds. For families, you can donate a well, or a small business loan, or lessons, or fishing nets. It's more fun than going shopping in the crowds, you can tailor the gift to the person, and there's no waste or overpowering consumerism. Plus, it's doing GOOD. Enjoy your December feasting!

My parents were in the Canadian military and for 6 years we lived in Germany. Even as a kid I was happier with going on trips to Italy, Spain or the Canary Islands than getting toys at Christmas. Almost 50 years later I still remember those trips and it is likely the reason I'm a history buff. Oh, and the best pizza ever was at a take-away window on a street in Naples.

Meg is the absolute hardest working person that I’ve ever seen in my life!! 😮Everything that she accomplishes in a day, that’s hard work!! I cook too, but not as much as I used to, and never ever as much as she does! This Christmas idea will be a TON of added work for her, yet she still smile’s. Amazing!!

Something oddly satisfying about the way you switched back and forth between the cooking and the outside work on the 8 and then 16 count.
Plays well with my inner musician. :) Happy thanksgiving to you all.

I made your roll recipe for Thanksgiving dinner. They were a hit for a particular spouse who does not approve of artisanal crusty bread. I took some extra dough and made a small cinnamon roll, which was also a hit. Thank you so much! I can recommend rabbit dredged in flour salt and pepper, browned, then braised in cider and caramelized onions. It's a best selling dinner. I see a "fancy drizzled popcorn" movie night.

Jason and Lorraine are wonderful people like yourselves. 🙂 Good on you kids. I have never liked the buy buy of Christmas. I give my grown children money to help them out and my husband and I buy ourselves something we would like, he his me mine but sometimes we buy nothing as we are blessed and do not need anything. I love putting money in the Salvation Arm Kettles. I do not pass a single one without putting in some bills. I enjoy watching all of you homesteaders.Justin and Rebekah, Jason and Lorraine and yourselves as you make all the food you eat as did I for the past 45 years because of allergies. I am 74 and still do not buy store bought meals but I have to say somedays I so want not to cook. Meg you cranked out a lot of amazing food. Happy Thanksgiving to your beautiful family. God Bless

I too love Thanksgiving for its pure focus on gratitude. I am very grateful to God for blessing me far beyond anything I could require of Him.

Your life seems so free of the difficulties of society. You make so many things in the house, barn, shop and garden that many people are not capable of doing. I commend you. It’s been a difficult couple of years since you moved. But the kids will remember all of this as adults!

Having grown up on , as well as making many made from scratch recipes. You are eating WELL. My eyes are stuffed, watching Meg cook, easy to imagine all the good Smells, coming from the kitchen. What skills you are teaching your kids along the way, i hope they fully absorb, and learn throughout there lives and adapt and even enhance as they get older. You can learn of course through books and videos, but Hands On Experience will rule the day. I enjoy watching your videos, your very good parents. Great welding repair job and solution Ben , i have also noticed that even when life can throw a wrench into it, you rebound quickly. In all your videos there is also a certain amount of calmness and contentment that comes through. On all your projects. Happy Thanksgiving !!

Meg, my mother's scratch cooking for her nine kids is exactly what you are doing in front of the camera for us! I never realized how physically hard that was. Your baking is perfect and I wish you had double ovens or a spare kitchen. We did all the canning in our basement on a gas stove. It was cooler too during the hotter Michigan summer days. My memory has changed to thanksgiving for the work ethic taught then from my crabby complaints of too much child labor. Blessings always to your family. 💕
