hi there no sawing in the snow here ,as for your little buddy ,here i had to get rid of mine , they started eating so many different things , best to all john
Hey there John. My red squirrel still doesn't seemed too interested in moving around. I'm starting to wonder if he tricked me and isn't actually up in the nest haha
Evening Sandy, Those are some nice live edge boards, I can see a river table top in some of them, Its been cold and windy here in N East GA. we don't stay out to long in the wind (30+mph gusts) Trees falling on power lines creating mischief, no snow here 40 miles North of here got quite a bit of snow and ice. You can spray ammonia on the nest and it will run the little booger off, works on skunks too! Stay warm and safe! John Toccoa GA👍👍👍
It's good to hear that some people are having an easy winter. We're having a tough, about 2 1/2 feet of snow last week - 30° f. Has warmed up to 28°f today life's good. Nice wood I must say. 👍
good morning Sandy yes it important to keep our logs clean i try to to debark my logs just before to put them on the mill that is why i can do 25 to 30 even plus log with one log before changing it are 95% of the time the cuts are smooth to the end i even cut through bullet and my cuts were still decently smooth after i cut my trees i don't drag my trees at all i put them on my log carrier and put them on elevated { telephone pole } skid so they don't get splash by the rain and get dirt but it is hard to keep them totally free of dirt i also wash them after debarking them . Nice slab some like that the chop shop would be a nice place to stack them have a great day
good video and job really nice lumber. you may need ti seal ends of boards all the maple i have sawed cracked on the ends. take care, be safe and well.
I never thought about you sawing firewood for lumber. I worry too much about staying warm. It was 16F (-8c) here in SE Texas this week, and I'm just not used to that anymore. That's why the fire has been hot and so has the coffee. But after saying all that, the wood did look good. Glad those blades are working out for you. Good vid. Thanks.
I would’ve never guessed it gets that cold down there. Some days it’s almost warmer here. I also start thinking about the cold nights when looking at hardwood logs
I have 2 very nice hard maple logs that came in a load of firewood. Will mill it, but unsure what its final use will be. Looking forward to your future projects!
GREAT looking lumber. I am sure you have heard of the attachment - small (maybe) 4 in cutter that cuts the dirty bark ahead of the saw blade. . Edit - 10F Granville Ma Sunday Night
you brought up something interesting I'm going to try and that is you said you put the back of your blade extending past your wheel and I always put mine flush with the back of the wheel and also your guides look like the blade goes into them farther than mine. I'm going to try those adjustments and maybe I'll get alittle smother cutting. I love the education. keep them coming.
Hi Noel, thanks for checking out the video. Yeah I used to put them flush with the back of the band wheel and then I believe I read in the manual that it said to put the blade evenly spaced over the back and front of the blade (bottom of the gullet to band wheel) and so I started doing that and it's worked out well.
That was a nice log made some beautiful pieces and I find it odd it's not as cold for you as it is in South Central Kentucky. It's 1° this morning Fahrenheit and supposed to be -4 tomorrow morning. We have made a switch apparently. Keep the good videos coming Sandy.
Sandy, good job getting the racks place so that can put the wood u don't want on-it. That log cut-up wood will come in handy.. 50 deg here in north florida. I'm cold pass 69deg..
As for the red squirrel... him not wanting to leave just means that you are not spending enough time at the sawmill making noise to disturb him. Get out there more often sawing and he will move to a quieter location. LOL
Hey Robert! I sure wouldn't mind getting out to the sawmill even more. I figured the squirrel would be long go with all the work I"m doing out there but he seems content.
Nice video Sandy. I have an older Woodmizer and it has a guage. When I put a new band on according to specs I run it for a few seconds to break in the new band and notice the pressure drops before I even start a cut. First cut on log the tension usually drops untill the blade streches. I would think you should check your tension after first couple of cuts.
Cool beans Sandy.. You could spray the Squirrel nest to evict it. Down here in the States we have Products for small rodents, large rodents, Dogs, Cats, Deer ETC... The one that works for Me for Squirrels is liquid Fence.. Mike M.
see some run a bark grinder on the in side of blade. must give the blade more life👍👍. i cryed many years ago after i got a load of firewood logs had two pink cherry 18 inchs logs that i cut up first.😭😭 should have had them milled
I’m living down near chilly 🥶 Ocala last night and it got down to 34F! lol My friend and I have started watching and enjoying your videos. We don’t own a mill, don’t have any trees that we can harvest but I do have an outdoor fire pit! We are looking at a 50 acre property in Mississippi. If we decide to purchase that property then possibly a sawmill will be in our future and the information you’re providing will come in handy.
Hi Tom! I did hear from others that it was cold down your way lately. Sounds like a neat place you're looking at. Keep me posted if you do end up getting it, would like to hear how you get things setup.
Hi Sandy. Yes, put the hardwood species on the mill. I have considered cookies sufficiently large to turn bowls on a lathe. I have a cherry tree in the yard that is looking sideways at me when I bring out the chainsaws.😂 Squirrels are good for eating black ants, when other protein is not readily available.
Hi Sandy. If you have shelves for various things, do you find that something is always difficult to find? That maple cut down to the nicest part would be just wide enough so that everything has a front row seat. Whatever your project is, it will look nice. Could your drill be used on the bolts to turn the blade to check the installation? Just a little more safety on a new blade. Have good days!
I'm with ya there. I do find that the deeper the shelves, the more apt I"m to not see what's up there. I'd have to think more about those bolts. I don't think they're reverse thread so that wouldn't be an issue
For sure. I"ll keep that in mind for the future. I normally just use my table saw, circular saw or mitre saw for the cutting of the lumber after it's dried as I'm about to build with it. Sometimes I use a planer though.
Hi Sandy I see that woodland mills has a steel grinding wheel for grinding blades! I was wondering if you tried it yet and what is the performance? I run guide wheels on mine but wonder which is the better option? pads or wheels! It would be worth your time to blase a path with the axe down your hard or soft wood log to save the dull~en of the blade!
I did see that as well but I haven't had a chance to try it. I'd prefer to have guide wheels on my sawmill to be honest. My preference would be to have guide wheels with slight down pressure on the blade to ensure the blade doesn't get any fluttering. Are you running a Woodland Mills with aftermarket guide wheels ? Or some other sawmill brands?
I am running a lumbermate 2000 by norwood it came with wheels! But I run woodmeizer blades I want to pick up one of those steel sharpening blades as I have a little sharpening company. I will let you know how it works! You can pick up guide wheels from Cooks if you want to try them. Wow I checked the price on your wood splitter crazy expensive I picked up my little spliter for 800 and did some modification to it but want to add a table and conveyor. I had planned to build them to sell them loved the design. seeing the price that company is charging their is potential to make some money. I am a welder for over thirty years. I enjoy your channel thanks.@@sawingwithsandy
Hi Brandon. I installed the lasers myself. Here's my playlist showing some videos where I installed them. th-cam.com/play/PLlIqRYdFUXsVerMUonTkFuoBzMbBPWRaY.html
Yeah as long as I could guarantee all the water was out of it it would be fine. It's so cold some days out there my sludge freezes inside my travel mug if I don't drink it fast enough
Deep snow and ice and very cold here in Vermont. Milling over for now. Watched a TH-cam in Alabama (Hobby Hardwood) who has a milling hardwood business. He talks about milling bark parallel or pith parallel. Says bark parallel makes the most stable boards. Never thought about this. You? @@sawingwithsandy
Hey there Luke. I do agree with the person in Alabama. I don't often have to worry too much about sawing parallel to the pith as my logs don't often taper much but when they do taper a fair bit I would try to ship up one end up the log for just that reason.
Coming from an area of pretty much conifers only I hate to see the 12" and larger maples get bucked up. If not for saw logs, but to feed my woodturning addiction. What do you do when sharpening bans with different rake angles?
Hey, Sandy- Have read that using stickers of species different than the boards can stain the boards, can't vouch for this from experience but would be a shame to have to plane or sand away some of that pretty maple...
Hey Sandy, just wondering why Woodland Mills suggests to hand tighten instead of using a torque wrench? My brother has a WM mill and he has been using the torque wrench and his blade comes off quite often, he hasn't cut a whole lot of lumber and he had to replace the drive belt, I am thinking we may have been putting to much tension on the blade, just wondering your thoughts. Our winters here in NL has changed too, we use to get lots of snow, I got one ride on my snowmobile last year this year it looks like it will stay parked. Enjoying your videos.

I may be mistaken here but I believe WM says the hand tighten method allow for more a consistent tightening as compared with torque wrenches which could vary depending on the make/model/quality of torque wrench. I'm envious of NL as both times I"ve been out there it's been one of the nicest places I've ever visited. People are very friendly as well
Thanks for the quick response Sandy, the next time we go to cut we will try the hand tighten, each time the blades comes off it ruins the blade which gets kind of expensive. If you ever come back to NL again I would like to get together for a sludge.
I agree with ya there Wayne. I cringe if I kick a blade off just due to the cost alone. I will for sure get in touch. Last time I was out there I spent some time out towards Springdale and did a few nice trips up north of Gros Morne. Drove out there from Ontario.

Some of the most interesting maple I've seen Sandy. Thank you!

Hey Liz! Sure is crispy out today! -20c right now
Enjoyable video as always Sandy, thanks again and keep them coming.
Hey Mike! Always good to hear from ya! Thanks and have a great weekend
Over in Alberta, our weather has been odd as well... except last weekend when we hit -50C... beautiful Maple though
I've been reading on the news all about you out there. Some of the coldest temperatures I can remember aside from up in the territories
Morning Sandy, beautiful maple boards, don't forget to seal the ends

Always glad to have ya along for the ride Calvin
A couple of the maple slabs would look great for fireplace mantels, take care Sandy
I'm with ya there Rodney. Nothing wrong with a few pieces of hardwood stockpiled for projects like that
Beautiful wood, Sandy, much too nice for firewood. I see a lot of Cribbage boards coming out of that log!! Stay warm...........

two things when cutting hard wood first cut make it a sizable thickness that way you can still get your fire wood. ☺

yes! about the same temp for winter.@@sawingwithsandy

makes nice hardwood lumber. Around here Sandy in NS. Canada there is not a big market for hardwood lumber. How is it in Ontario??
