SAD* In the name of God. dy Merciful to all, Compassionate to each! By the Qur'an of Remembrance! It is the unbelievers who are plunged in arrogance and schism. How many a generation We destroyed before them! They 38:3 cried for help, but there was no time for escape. They find it strange that a warner has come to them, of their number; and the blasphemers say: 'He is a lying sorcerer. Does he reduce the gods to One God? This is surely a thing most bizarre!' And their council breaks up, saying: Depart, and remain faithful to your gods, for this is a cause to be cherished. We never heard of this in the latest religion. This is nothing but fabrication. Was the Remembrance sent down on him - from among us all?' No indeed! Rather, they are in doubt regarding My Remem- 38:8 brance. Or rather, they have yet to taste torment! 38:27 We did not create the heavens and earth, and what is in between, in vain. This is the fantasy of unbelievers - alas for the unbelievers from the Fire! Or are We to treat those who believed and did righteous deeds like those who do corruption on earth? Are We to treat the pious like the impious? Here is a Book We brought down upon you, blessed, that they might ponder its verses and that men possessed of mind might remember. 38:29 And on David We bestowed Solomon - excellent was he as servant, and ever repentant! Remember when, on an evening, were displayed before him horses frisky and fleet. He said: I have a love of horses that makes me forget my Lord till the sun hides behind its veil. Bring them back to me. And he proceeded to stroke their shanks and necks. 38:33 And We tested Solomon by placing on his throne a physical likeness. Then he repented and said: 'My Lord, forgive me, and grant me a kingship which no one after me shall possess; it is You Who are All-Giving. We placed the wind at his service to blow at his command, mildly, and wherever he pleased; so too the demons, every builder and diver, and others bound in chains. 'This is Our bounty: grant or withhold it, without reckoning. y To Us he shall be drawn near, and shall have a goodly place 10 to rest. They will say: 'It is you rather who are not welcome. It is you who led us to it - wretched is this destination!' They will say: 'Our Lord, whoever led us into this, multiply his torment in the Fire.' They will say: 'Why is it that we do not see men we used to regard as evil, and took for objects of mockery? Have we 8:63 overlooked them?' Such shall in truth be the mutual recrimination of the people of the Fire. Say: I am but a warner, and there is no god but the One, All-Conquering God; Lord of the heavens and earth and what is in between, Almighty, Ever-Forgiving.' Say: "It is a message of great import, but you turn your backs upon it. I had no knowledge of the Highest Assembly as they disputed one against another. I am merely one who receives 3:70 inspiration, merely a clear warner.' Remember when your Lord said to the angels: I am creating a human Remember when your Lord said to the angels: I am creating a human being from clay. When I give him the right shape and breathe into him of My spirit, bow down prostrate before him.' The angels bowed, all in a body, except Iblis, who became proud and was an unbeliever. He said: *O Iblis, what prevented you from bowing to what I created with My hands? Are you too proud or are you too exalted?* He said: I am better than him; You created me of fire, but him You created of clay. He said: Depart from this place, ever to be stoned! My curse shall be upon you until the Day of Judgement.' He said: *My Lord, defer me till the Day they are resurrected: Hesaid: 'You shall be deferred until that well-known moment.' He said: I swear by Your Might, I shall seduce them all, except for Your devout worshippers. He said: In truth, in very truth, I say to you: I shall fill hell to the brim with you and all who follow you of their number.' Say: I ask you no wage for it, nor am I one who dissembles. This is but a Remembrance to mankind. And, in a while, you will surely come to know its true import.'
