Dear Arthur and all. This is a fine lens. I have had excellent results since I bought it in Dubai in about 2016. The lens hood which Arthur glossed over is FANTASTIC for a number of reasons. it does the sun screening/glare reduction stuff as expected BUT it also has a standard 49 mm filter thread built in, while still permitting a filter in the lens. This allows any configuration of filters, one, or some can be swiftly removed and added (without the screwing (!) ) leaving an eg: UV while removing eg: ND filters. Without any filters and just the hood it is 'maul proof' as the front lens is well recessed behind the small rectilinear hole. The lens; not the ultimate sharpness compared with high end glass, with an aperture of f2.8 offers all the benefits of low light capability and depth of field reduction while in a tiny, lightweight package. I cringe at the current price in the UK but I won't sell mine in a hurry. I bought it for my a7r. I had difficulty getting a full frame wide angle, so my experience and love affair began on the rigors of a high MP full frame and turned in lovely shots. Use on my a6000 for the last 6 months has been flawless, being basically a crop lens designed for the Sony a6000 series. This lens with hood on an a6000 makes a pocketable device superior to other point and shoot offerings. Enjoy,
I have this lens and use it quite frequently. Because of the form factor, wide but not too wide focal length, and somewhat faster aperture, it is ideal (for me) for occasions like family parties, urban photography, restaurant outings etc. Together with the wide converter (which makes it 16 mm) and the fisheye it makes a small, versatile package at a not too expensive price. My copy is noticeably sharper than my kit lens at 20mm and does a much better job inside for casual (no flash) stills.
Sony really needs to get on the ball with their APS-C E-mount glass. I really want to see a 16-35mm or a 16-50mm f/2.8 OSS alternative to the kit lens, and a 24mm f/2 OSS for a good walkaround low-light street shooter.
I love this lens. I have it since I had the A6000 and then the A6300. Now with the A6500 and its IBIS, this lens is perfect for walking while traveling. You can't beat the size, even with the "hood".
Just wanted to say thanks for all the videos you've made, and has helped me with my lens choices. I really need people who can tell me honestly what they think of these things, and you do provide just that. Please don't ever change that.
I've had this lens for close to a year. The form factor is great. Colors are great. Contrast is great. It's a fun lens because of the size. It's the most pocketable lens which is why many people buy mirrorless in the first place. On the down side: The price is too high. The lack of OSS is a real deal-breaker for handheld vid when paired with the a5100 or a6000 as seen at 3:22 in your video. And finally, because of the focal length, the pics are just not as beautiful as with the 35 or 50mm 1.8. Great vid, keep 'em coming!
can you do a comparison between this lens and the kit lens at 20mm? I'm curious to see how it compares in regards to sharpness. Thanks for this review!
It's a very interesting lens. The smallest for Sony E. Great focal length when you need something wide but not too much or you want to do street photography or hiking. Much sharper then the Sony 16mm 2.8 and the kit lens 16-50. The only real flaw is the missing OSS but on A6500 it's not a problem. If you find it used it's a great deal (new is overpriced).
If it were to be faster than f2.8 it would need a bigger formfactor because of the front element size. This seems quite awkward for a pancake lens and would defeat the idea of it I feel. This lens only makes sense if you want the formfactor, and there seem to be quite a few people that want the form factor.
I thought about getting this one, but couldn't justify it against the kit lens to be honest. At 20mm is just one stop faster, not much sharper and you lose the zoom and OSS (And to make things worse it's even more expensive than the kit). If it was F2.0 with OSS it would be a different story though. PS: Zeiss 24mm when? :D
Shao Fu Hu Wu, I can give you a summary of the 24mm Zeiss 1.8! Amazing for everything, EXCEPT landscapes because it is softer than even the kit lens in the edges of the frame (due to field curvature, or so they say). For low light, portraits, macro, and even video on an a6500, it is an amazing lens and performs well. It is strikingly sharper than the kit kens in the center, though noticeably softer in the edges. The transition is gradual. Pixel peepers will probably be disappointed, but I think anyone else will be satisfied! However, definitely find a cheap second hand copy, absolutely no way this lens is worth the retail price. Hope this helps!
A 20m f2 (or f1.8) with OSS would be an amazing lens. I suspect Sony is mostly interested in form factor /size for this aperture though -- they want it to be a true "pancake" and thus they're less interested in feature addition and more in keeping size down.
I got one used for 170 euro, it's sharp and fast enough to carry around town in the evening and it's very fun to use. I wouldn't pay 300+ for the new though.
I think it would be useful if you also stated what the full frame equivalent is. We see all these pros talking about getting a 50mm look or what's a 20mm good for etc. But of course these guys are using full frames not a smaller one with 1.5 crop factor like a Sony A6000. So this lens on a Sony A6000 in reality is an image associated with 30mm. It would be good if this was clearer in your lens reviews because a lot of beginners really don't get this (I only understood this recently) and you review a lot of entry level prime lenses. A beginner might get a 35mm lens for the Sony A6000 thinking... great, I can for those 35mm street shots, awesome! But in reality they are getting something closer to a 50mm. Happy Christmas and looking forward to your vids in 2018.
It's a pretty simple calculation - just multiply it all by 1.5. I personally don't like referencing everything to a "full frame equivalent field of view" because it really doesn't matter. I use an A6000 and I know what 16mm looks like on an A6000. If you are coming from full frame to crop, I can see why you might want to calculate equivalent fields of view, but if you are just starting out or have always used crop sensors - knowing a 16-50 lens is actually a 24-75mm on a full frame isn't a game changer.
It's only the cropped image that is 1.5x of the full frame equivalent. The depth of field and the amount of the bokeh remains the same. You won't get the blown out 50mm type of bokeh when using a 35mm x 1.5 crop factor, nor the compression in the background. Your field of view is close to 50mm full frame since it's 35mm x1.5. Like for the enthu wife's prancing!
Of course it doesn't matter so much if you know what a certain lens look like on your camera. The most important thing is knowing your kit. But the point I am making is that for beginners who watch different TH-cam channels about photography and see experts answering questions like, 'What should you first prime lens be - 35mm or 50mm?' it totally matters. I promise you loads of beginners (me too) see these lenses like 35mm for Sony A6000 and want one because DigitalRev or whoever said a 35mm is a great first prime lens because of x reasons. They want to replicate the kind of framing that they saw experts doing with their 35mm (not realising that was on a full frame). Yeah, always referencing full frame equivalent isn't always necessary, and of course most people watching this aren't using full frames and so the image you show is the one we get. A lot people don't care what I am talking about!!! But still, because the standard way experts compare different lenses (the lens being the tool to create moods, narrative, story telling etc) is on a full frame, I prefer to think in full frame equivalent so the knowledge and skills all line up.
The better these crop sensors get, the less full frame cameras become relevant. Only pros shooting for their livelihood need to consider full frame cameras. Comparing everything back to full frame equivalent is a good reference, but is not necessary IMO.
referring back to full frame is helpful because there are a good number of different crop sensor types. If you set full fram as a standard it becomes easier to compare a canon crop to sony crop to panasonic. not necessary to someone who knows their kit but but this channel, like many, is appealing to people who dont know their kit well yet.
well, its around 200 usd here in Sweden. But if you want an absolute perfect buy, go for the sigma 16 1.4. I know its double the price and bigger in size but better bang for the buck. And sharp as hell!
I have this lens and don't use it as much. After seeing your Sigma 16mm lens review I got that one and have gotten more use and beautiful images in the last 2 weeks out of it compared to my Sony 20mm 2.8 which I've had for a while.
Just picked this up (it's technically not even here yet). Thanks for sharing the experience. Very nice combination of photos. Wait, did your girl still have the little plastic hanging thing on her hat? (2:57)
The Sigma 19mm (which you've also reviewed) is sharper according to DxOMark and is half the price. I just got one for Christmas and am very happy with it. It seemed an easy choice over the Sony 20mm.
I need your help! Which two lenses would you recommend for a6300? 35 1.8 oss 18 105 oss Sigma 16 1.4 Sigma 18 35 1.8 Or from other lenses you have in mind! Thank you
20mm is wide enough on a full frame, this acts like 30mm on your camera, so maybe that's why you got that impression. I just ordered 20mm, don't make me feel regretting it already :) but it is for full frame.
I bought the Sigma 19mm first and just bought the sony to replace it. For my needs (video), the autofocus and facetracking was horrible with the sigma unfortunately. For vlog style videos, it was unusable (focus would drift off to absolutely nothing sometimes haha), but if it's for photos and filming others, it was pretty great!
just wondering if you have access to a 18-200mm of any version (preferablly the tamron rebrand) and do a comparison with the 18-105 you previously done O_O?
hi arthur, planning to buy this lens but some are saying that the autofocus doesnt work and doesnt lock in on a6400 but works with older models. have you tested it on an a6400? thanks!
I might be out of the loop. But I'm wondering why you are not using your a6300? Do you still have it? Other than that, keep it up :) enjoy your vids alot!
Hey my friend! Amazing video! I know your wife uses a sony 5100 for her vlog. Which lens does she use and what setting program to have such amazing footage? Everything on auto? Thank you and best!!!!
TechnologyMafia amazing! Just aperture priority? Just selecting that? If any other settings, please I need your help. Really love quality of your videos!!! Thank you!!!
Comparison vs kitlens would be nice. Both wide open and at 5.6. Also low light performance and video would be nice. My conclusion is that while it is sharper at same f stop. In low light the kit lens gets a way sharper image at lower shutter speeds due to OSS. So in daylight 20mm is sharper, if it gets dark the kitlens beats it.
Another thought: What I'd really like to see is stabalization differences with a OSS lens and non OSS lens (sony 35 vs sigma 30mm 1.4) when shot on w/ IBIS (like a A6500). Is there much difference, how well does OSS work with IBIS. Or is the sigma just as nice and stabalized with IBIS only. I doubt you got the 6500, just some thoughts for future video!
That's the problem, there's seems to be no suitable small lenses for Sony emount, with auto focus. This 20 mm is the perfect size , but is that, a good enough reason for buying it. It seems that other camera manufacturers can produce sharp pancakes eg canon. Hopefully Sony will bring out something suitable soon.
The 16mm pancake doesn’t resolve that good on 24mp sensors (they were okay when Sony aps-c bodies used lower resolution sensors) The 20mm pancake is fairly sharp in the centre, even wide open. The corners need some stopping down to get to reasonable sharpness, though.. but depending on your use case, that might or might not be a problem.
I'm late with a comment but I have the 20mm on a Nex6. 16mm is too wide for me for "normal" photos and afaik 20mm has better image quality. If that's important the Sony/Zeiss 24mm/1.8 is an option but it's bigger (still quite small) and much more expensive.
REMEMBER THAT DUE TO THE CROP FACTOR THIS LENS IS EQUIVALENT TO 35 MM. Now that that's cleared up, I love this as a travel lens. Either on the 5100 or the 6xxx it's beautiful and very sharp. And a prime lens you can take with you on holidays. You keep forgetting about crop factor, it isn't really a 20 mm but closer to a 35. Bear this in mind. True, no OSS but none needed with the inboard 5 axis OIS on the 6500. And at 300 something it's much better than the kit lens and far more versatile.
Hey thank u for all the info in the video. I only have one question. Since this lens is made for a crop sensor camera is the focal length actually 20mm or do you still have to multiply it by the 1.6x crop to get the actual focal length? And if you do isn’t it equivalent to a 35mm full frame lens? Thanks in advance. I was looking into getting this to do street photography.
If you were to compare the focal length of this lens to a full frame Sony, it's closer to a 30mm look. For a Sony APS-C, you have to multiple by 1.5 (20 * 1.5 = 30). If you were to get the Sigma 30mm, that'd be closer to a 45mm look.
When you giving your merch to your wife as a christmas gift... xD Anyway, glad you did that review of this lens because there are not many these days. Also what's your opinion about mounting FF lenses on Crop? There are lot of speculations about losing megapixels and detail that I honestly don't know what next lens I should buy.
Lol, the other way around - she gave me merch as a Christmas gift! Apparently she likes her gift to me so much she wants to wear it as well. As for your FF question - it's fine, I would say it is "better" to use a crop lens, but honestly the difference is not worth worrying about.
TechnologyMafia definitely more real world use than with a gimbal. But that's with any lens really, bit many people have gimbals to goof around with. Did you get to keep the crane 2?
Great video! Absolutely love all of them. I will have to check out the wifey's channel too! I did have a question. For streaming what lens would you recommend for a wide angle and has a nice bokeh effect but something that's still affordable. I am looking into buying the A6400. :) I hope you don't mind me asking! Thanks so much. :)
No, A58 has A-mount. This is for E-mount mirrorless cameras. For A-mount I have a second hand Minolta 24mm/2.8. There's also a 20mm/2.8 but that's more bulky and there's the Sony/Zeiss 24mm/2 which is more expensive and also bigger.
Paul H. Absolutely loved the images out of the a6000. Pair it with the sigma 30mm and 16mm f/1.4 and it’s absolutely stunning. 200D has a way better autofocus for video, and if you want to attack a microphone to it you can as it has a mic input. Also you have the entire selection of canon lenses with it, which tend to be a lot more affordable. So short answer is, depends is, what you prefer.
Jonathan Caldentey I bought the Canon 200d. It’s actually really stunning what you can get out of the Kit Lens! Especially in low light! And the micro port was important because I wanted to get into video too✌️
The kit lens is about this size and offers 95% of the performance at 20mm. At half the cost, or less. Size matters, but performance and value matters more.
@@ArthurRI have both lenses and I didn't like at all the kit lens while traveling: Needs time to switch on and off and always starts at the wide end which is too wide most of the time.
Nice video, but not sure that it's so accurate, I have had this lens for a couple of years now, and mostly use it as a cover for my sensor. Image quality is poor, one in twenty shots are useable, if that. Save your money and buy something else.
Hello, the Sony 20mm/2.8 is my primary lens. Quality of the photos is very good for me. I like the bokeh on this lens. The only thing I miss is stabilization. Although this lens has not stabilization, (I think) I shot quite good video. You can see this video on my channel. The only way to overcome the shakes I did the "strap stabilization" ( goo.gl/images/ScjGi3 ) and it did great job. Its not absolutely perfect but its good for some amateur videos in combination with warp stabilizer in Adobe Premiere. I like your videos! You help me a lot with your advices about lens and accesories. Thank you very much.

I agree with you Jason Sony need to catch up with there lens line up
I love this lens. I have it since I had the A6000 and then the A6300. Now with the A6500 and its IBIS, this lens is perfect for walking while traveling. You can't beat the size, even with the "hood".
Were travel photos taken while walking blurry without IBIS?
Your videos were a major reason why I chose to purchase the Sony a6000, thank you for leading me to such a great product!
Exactly, perfect summary.
Yes exactly
can you do a comparison between this lens and the kit lens at 20mm? I'm curious to see how it compares in regards to sharpness. Thanks for this review!
2:57 - that hook on the cap:-)
It's a very interesting lens. The smallest for Sony E. Great focal length when you need something wide but not too much or you want to do street photography or hiking. The way your wife interrupted the video was soooo cute LOL

I use the 20mm quite a lot in casual settings but I agree : I would love there to be an affordable 23mm f1.8 eMount APSC lens with OSS.
A 20m f2 (or f1.8) with OSS would be an amazing lens. I suspect Sony is mostly interested in form factor /size for this aperture though -- they want it to be a true "pancake" and thus they're less interested in feature addition and more in keeping size down.
New one just released
Been waiting for this one! Thanks
This lens is great for street photography

Haha easy choice between the two!
Not available in Europe anymore for several months now. Even used only for astronomical prices (if you find one).
Just picked this up (it's technically not even here yet). Thanks for sharing the experience. Very nice combination of photos.
Wait, did your girl still have the little plastic hanging thing on her hat? (2:57)
so,this is better 16mm or 20mm sony?
btw
merry chrismas and happy new year
PIDIEPOO sundayphotomaniac yep, ots very interesting!!!
It's much sharper and better than the 16mm. 16mm is unusable.
The 16 from Sony is ok but not real sharp the 20 is definitely sharper. Lots of chromatic aberration on the 16.
I like it more than my Minolta AF 20mm F2.8. I use the ultra wide converter on the 16mm F2.8. I've heard it also works on the 35mm F1.8.
Hey is there any way I could buy that technologymafia shirt? I really like the logo(:
I love this lens by far my favorite
Can I use it to capture Real Estate and Cars Enterier? (Small Spaces)
20mm is too narrow for that.. heck, even my widest lens at 11mm sometimes struggles in really tight spaces 😅
The Sigma 19mm (which you've also reviewed) is sharper according to DxOMark and is half the price. I just got one for Christmas and am very happy with it. It seemed an easy choice over the Sony 20mm.
I need your help!

I use it to record all of my videos! It has been getting more use than my A6000 in the last month.
You should definitely do a review on the new 7artisans 12mm 2.8! That seems like an interesting lens for a really affordable price.
Hi, should I buy a Sony Alpha 6000 Kit with the 16-50 mm & 55-210 mm lens for 666€ or save some money and buy the normal kit with the 16-50mm lens?
Hey my friend! Amazing video! I know your wife uses a sony 5100 for her vlog. Which lens does she use and what setting program to have such amazing footage? Everything on auto? Thank you and best!!!!

Sony 6400 with 20mm F2.8
What do u think about it for street photography???
I have this combo and it works great.
Sony Alpha 16mm F2.8 or Sony Alpha 20mm F2.8 ? which one do u prefer Arthur?
Hello, which one did you go for if I may ask?
@@TedEhioghae I didn't have yet
The 16mm pancake doesn’t resolve that good on 24mp sensors (they were okay when Sony aps-c bodies used lower resolution sensors)
The 20mm pancake is fairly sharp in the centre, even wide open.
Hi! Could do a review between Sigma 8-16mm and Sony 10-18 please?
Perhaps you could do a video with the Fisheye Converter
VCL-ECF2 for the 20mm F2.8 lens.
20mm no Optical Stabilizer?
Is this lens good for recording video? - Thomas
Please compare this to the Sony & Meike 35mm
A 23mm f2 even without OSS would be nice for general purpose photography. A 35mm equivalent lens just like what fujifilm do with their lenses.
Hey, anyone tried the Meike extension tubes on the Sony 20mm? In theory, the 10mm tube is still usable right?
When you giving your merch to your wife as a christmas gift... xD
Anyway, glad you did that review of this lens because there are not many these days.
BitWolf, check Tony Northup's TH-cam video about ff lens being use in crop body, in that segment he clearly explain the difference.
can you do sony 20mm vs kit lens comparison? tq in advance.
Honestly, the 20mm isnt worth it if you have a kit lens. The difference in sharpness is negligible, and you give up OSS.
TechnologyMafia Thanks for replying. Really appreciate it.
Hi! What filter did you use on your lens for the long exposure shot @3:19?
Love your vids, happy holidays!
No filter, just some messing around with manual settings.
Thank you and Happy Holidays! -- Спасибо!
Because of your funny wife Thumbs Up :D
If you could have only two lenses for your a6000, which two would you pick?
35mm 1.8 and 18-105 f4
The silver 18-200 zoom and the 10-18mm zoom.
Will this lens work on sony A7ii ?
Nice video, is there a reason you don't use a gimbal for your video examples?
Variety - sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. This lens is more of a pocketable one, so I figured handheld would be more applicable.
TechnologyMafia definitely more real world use than with a gimbal. But that's with any lens really, bit many people have gimbals to goof around with. Did you get to keep the crane 2?
Love the video bomb! Woot woot!
Bring back Tech Mafia!
Can you review the Sony 24mm f/1.8 prime? SEL24F18Z.
Seth Lenzi i have this lens, it’s fantastic! On my camera 80% if the time.
Give it away..would love to get it for Christmas!
YES FINALLY!!!
perfect for street photography 20mm = 35mm on apsc
can you please tell me what wrist strap that you are using?
I have 3 wrist straps - one for each of my cameras, and they are all from flashlights that I purchased on amazon/banggood.
Thank you!
Does this lens works in a Sony A7RII?
Yes, it does, but in crop mode.
I love your videos !!!!!!
Thank you for subscribing!
Sony 55-210 next please! 😀
2:58 There is still a hook attached to the cap... Brand new I guess?😏 Second christmasgift after the Shirt?🤗
Big fan of your work!
Question... What is the best setting shoot in low light. I have an a6000 with a 50mm 1.8 oss (Sony) like in a party or club
What do you use for video editing?
Adobe Premiere Pro
Thank you, love the channel, keep up the great work
Great video! :)
Does it go with the Sony A7R3 ?
No, this is a crop sensor lens.
Sigma 30mm or 16mm f/1.4 is the only way to go.
looks like a great lens but as you say way over priced ... I have the Sigma 19mm F2.8 & cost me £90 ($120) used...
your wife is adorable :D. Is that sony lens a pancake lens (or whatever they call it?)?
Indeed it is a pancake lens!
Hello can it be mount in sony alpha a58?
No, A58 has A-mount. This is for E-mount mirrorless cameras.
For A-mount I have a second hand Minolta 24mm/2.8.
There's also a 20mm/2.8 but that's more bulky and there's the Sony/Zeiss 24mm/2 which is more expensive and also bigger.
I think I'm better off with Sigma 19 f2.8 , which is much cheaper than this and also produce excellent result according to its price.
Oss?
Sony a6000 or Canon 200D?
And the micro port was important because I wanted to get into video too✌️
The advantage of this is size. You entirely missed the point of this lens by comparing f stops and subjective focal lengths.
The kit lens is about this size and offers 95% of the performance at 20mm. At half the cost, or less. Size matters, but performance and value matters more.
@@ArthurRI have both lenses and I didn't like at all the kit lens while traveling:
Needs time to switch on and off and always starts at the wide end which is too wide most of the time.
Your wife cracks me up.
waiting for test new sigma 16mm 1.4 dc :)
Lol the video I made two weeks ago!?
Mrs TechnologyMafia - blink twice if you are being held against your will ......
marry christmas 2020 lolz
Damn man your wife.. you must be the happiest man on earth :-)
Nice intro :)
Who's here after Tamron released the disappointing 20 f/2.8?
Nice video, but not sure that it's so accurate, I have had this lens for a couple of years now, and mostly use it as a cover for my sensor. Image quality is poor, one in twenty shots are useable, if that.
Save your money and buy something else.
What do you use instead of this 20mm? Just curious.
와... 사진 멋지다 good
punching above your weight, looking at your wife. Well done!
You and your wife are lovely. :)
hahaha
😂
360p SQUAAAAD !
LOL refresh it - its HD now!
I know xD was just stating that i was early XD good video.
The longest 25 second video ever.
Like for the great wife
Does your wife know the plastic hook is still on her beanie?
Hot girl. The camera is OK too.
