It's all about the money and what major brands appear to be like in order to get the most out of it. Skateboarding never gave a damn about superficialities since day one. As long as you show dedication you're part of the community, doesn't matter what colour, sex, religion, physical constitution or whatever. I don't get why emphasizing differences should be some sort of cultural progression - cause it's quite the opposite.
People say that all the time, that if you're dedicated then your background doesn't matter. In practice though, that's not how it is. You just need to scroll through the social media of some girl skating, and no matter how good of a skater she is, she'll still get sexist comments. Maybe *you* wouldn't leave such comments, but there's no denying that this stuff happens.
Of course..but that won't stop 'just' because you switch from being Lacey to be Leo and denying a part of your identity just because some asshole reduce you to be nothing else but being an instance of their stereotypes. I know that this happens...but i also know that diversity won't reduce stereotypism at all. Cause it is more or less a subculture (just like skateboarding). After all people still won't get, that you're a wonderful complex human being and will insult you (sometimes simply by not getting that you're a wonderful complex human being). Either you can learn to deal with it or make up a difference that doesn't exist in the first place.
@@layouterlimits Honestly, I think diversity would help that. People are more tolerant when they are more exposed to people from different backgrounds. By the way, I don't know if that's how this comment was intended, but Leo Baker isn't denying part of his identity.
I don't think exposure automatically results into more tolerance. People love or hate things they deal with on daily basis. Generally they tend to be indifferent towards others as long as they don't know em - which is pretty normal behaviour i guess. Sometimes people are triggered by 'weaknesses'..they judge you by your appearance and define you to be introvert, poor, dumb or whatever they think to be weak and not desireable for themselves. Sometimes that is due to things people don't like about their own person. And that is where stereotypes come into play. Everyone has them. It is more a question of politeness or impulse control not to unreasonably dislike something about someone by expressing prejudices. I'm no psychologist but Lacey as a little girl was in charge to earn the money that she and her (addictive) mother needed to live. She had to be strong and she had to be a winner. There was no choice for her and no childhood-like freedom. I think becoming Leo was his way to cope with his childhood and perceive an enthusiasm for skateboarding. That's somehow retroactive denial. There was a reason why Leo refused to be Lacey. It is due to his biography and not because he was born with the wrong body parts.
Lgbtq is a group whom hypocritically craves inclusivity. They push out anyone who isn’t like them. We’re supposed to support or be called some form of “phobic” meanwhile, they intentionally segregate themselves and cry victim to anyone who disagrees.
Been skateboarding for 20+ years. I have never seen any discrimination at a park. Skateboarding is literally always been a place that anyone has been accepted. I've some weird cats in the park and it was always a place where the "unpopular" kids hang out or the "weirdos". I don't agree with this video by making it seem like there is some sort of division in skateboarding. If there is, then name and shame the locations so others don't hang out in a park that is about discrimination. Because 99% of the skateboarding scene does not give a shit who you are, where you came from or what you believe in. The woman said she is from Utah and moved to Seattle then let us know... like is it the "Skatepark of Salt Lake City" that is anti-trans. Don't claim a story unless you want to shell out the hard facts. This video gives a bad representation of "division" to the outside public on the 99% of skateboarders who actually treat everyone equal.
What you said is really true you can have any haircut, and clothes, any shoes be any race or any height or age or gender or being part of the lgbt+ community and they wouldn’t care they would still treat you like any other skater even if your a beginner most of the people will help you im a beginner and I’ve gotten help with my Ollie’s at a skatepark rn I’m learning them while rolling fast not just pushing my board one single time it’s crazy how they treat everyone equally
@@mariomeza2759 not really. I've been bullied out of parks, buses, and in school all for just holding a skateboard. no one actually saw me skate before deciding to insult me about it.
Skateboarding essence is not for everyone, not everyone fully grasps what skateboarding truly means...

I'd say I'm pretty good at skating! Pretty rude. You ever try to reason with someone who thinks you're a joke? Kind of hard. And they weren't the same people. Weren't even in the same states or age range. Somehow, holding onto a board elicited enough motivation and the same reaction across a lot of male skaters
@@geenz7105 i know people are like that for no reason they basically harass you just for holding a board as if they are active why would you get kicked out of parks though and being kicked out of a bus is so weird it’s just a piece of wood with wheels it won’t hurt anyone in a bus
exactly. nobody ever refuses to teach girls to skate
@@mariomeza2759 And across a decade, states, age range. Very strange. While only having one guy come up to encourage me to join his sess, in the 10yrs of skating. I am thankful things have changed in the last few years. It means so much

@@geenz7105 Why should we let y’all have it, when y’all haven’t earned anything? Admiration & respect are earned. Not something given away freely because you feel like you deserve it.
@@WickedGames7 Wait, how long you've been skating? You haven't answered that. Isn't skating all about tricks and skills regardless of positionality on ideas? Let's hear it, friend. This is an honest question, why is it always women who transitioned from men in the lime light and not the other way?
because men are better in stuff like this and dont really need the "huge support" like some women need.
@@jezzrowo3678 we want equality or no ?
@@sucmechris we? No. Not really. Take skateboarding. Name me any women whos at the same level like jamie, nayjah or yuto. And if u tell me theyre the best of the best, yes, but they are all men. Why no women there? U cant expect women to do the same as men. Men do some things better than women, exact same the other way. So again to the main question: why is it always women? Cuz they just need more support than men cuz men are just better and dominant in this sport.
Leo Baker is right there…do some research lmao

All I know is transgenger people better have their own catagory to compete in.
And I don't care how "offensive" that may sound to people.
Agreed 100%. It’s not fair to the real biological females.

I think it’s great to skate like a girl. But I skate like a man. I’m a man and proud to be a man. My skateboard prowess comes from my manhood. Skateboarding is for everyone trans or not. But we also gotta respect female at birth skaters (xx). They rise above what men (xy) have established as skateboarding. So it’s fine to skate like a girl but recognize and respect our differences. Male at birth comes with tremendous physical capability and women have to truly rise to a level of excellence to compete with that.
