Hey - sitting here in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia, watching your videos. Good job. My F800GS arrived on Tuesday and this weekend I will be getting it ready for these "roads" . Thanks !
I just fixed a flat on the trails this weekend and didn't have to take off the calipers or the ABS sensor. It wasn't a problem. Also, I loosened the bolt on the axel before the pinch bolts.
I've done it without removing the calipers or the ABS sensor but it was more of a pain. I just find it only takes a second or two to remove them and then I can do it without any fiddling.
great video! i think the other Awesome Players should have been there to provide some colorful commentary while you worked on your bike....lol please post more vids
i plan on longer trips on the highway also so it needs some power dealers that we have talked to said that the dr and klr struggle on the higher speeds and the only thing i am worried about with the versys and strom is dropping them because there is a lot more to break where your 800 can take major abuse and i dont want to be worried about dropping the bike and breaking alot of stuff on the bike. kind of takes away from the whole off road feeling!
I think the F650 is more of an enduro (Sertao or the old Dakar model) and the V-Strom less and the Versys even less. If you watch my clips you see what I do and what abuse the bike can take. You could certainly put knobbies on the Strom and the Versys but less ground clearance would be a major issue for me as would the 19" front tire. A DR650 or KLR are choices as well if you don't mind the low power on the road. You will certainly like less weight on the trail! Compromise time.....
Good video, thanks! Just one note, I've seen the value to tighten the axle bolt to 50Nm in a few riding blogs, so I am confused with your value of 30 Nm, I'll go with 50 Nm until further notice.
It is certainly harder. Some guys have made their own tool by using a bolt that the head fits inside the axle. Loctite or weld a nut on the bolt so you can hold it with a wrench.
@boxwoodgreen If you google "f800 axle tool " you'll see that lots of companies make them. I added the link to the one I bought to the description of the video since you can't post links in comments.
Sorry never had to do that. You will probably need the special socket to remove the ignition. I got one with the kit to install my steering damper. Some guys just use Vice Grips. Do yu the BMW service DVD? It shows how to do pretty much everything.
They are fine but a big rock will bend anything! Check out Renazco Racing and mention the advrider site and get 10% off. Twealcom makes them and they are available at F800Depot as well.
Not sure what it was called. I searched for F800 axle tool and saw a bunch of companies that make it or similar. touratech-usa.com/Store/22-19mm-Hex-BMW-Axle-Adapter-Tool-R1200-and-F800 www.amazon.com/R1200GS-F800GS-Front-Wheel-Tool/dp/B005CW9LMO bestrestproducts.com/shop/besthex-wrenches/besthex-kit-f800gs-f800gs/ www.wunderlichamerica.com/motorcycle/8160238.html

sound at 5:00 hilarious ;-) Keep up making all your great movies, seen them all and enjoyed them!
Sweet. The first scratch is the hardest...
Enjoy the new ride.
Great stuff as always.
Just don't forget to pump your brakes to build up pressure before your first ride.
Love all your vidoes, but the tech tips will come in extra handy when I pick up my '10 F800GS tomorrow!!

Just got a Triple Black so good to know. Thanks.
thanks for the great tip videos used it today and was a great help for the newbie...new set of TKC 80's.
Glad to be of help. Was just checking the valves and fixing that nasty valve cover leak.
Excellent video, very accurate information

Good point! I'll add that as a title. Thanks.
Excellent video! Thanks for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great how to, thanks for posting.

Would you reccomend them then? The only other after market rotors I've seen are Wunderlich.

Interesting. Just checked the BMW service DVD and it is 30 NM.
I can send you my copy of the DVD since I don't really need it anymore.
Thanks. I’m no longer intimidated!
Glad to hear. Just make sure to squeeze the brakes a few times before you roar off and make sure they work!
Say..What size is the “dohicky” you refer to in the video. Thanks
What's the "little tool" you used to help get the axle stared out, and where would one find one??
so would you recommend the 800 for an enduro? My other choices was the single f650, Kawasaki Versys, or the Suzuki Vstrom.
Again, nice rotors, where from?
Rewmember to tighten pinchbolts 2-3 times alternately, because as soon as you tighten the second, the first one become looser.
malcallm Good advice.
Sweet. Send us some video!
Interesting video
Cool, awesome channel. How do you get the front wheel off the ground when you out on the trail?
Put bike on centre stand.
17 mm wrench in my toolkit.
Thanks fot the video! How do You tight the axle without that special tool? Is that possible?
It is certainly harder. Some guys have made their own tool by using a bolt that the head fits inside the axle. Loctite or weld a nut on the bolt so you can hold it with a wrench.
thanks for video - for the very first time in my life I did it by my own - maybe it sounds crasy, but that's true ;) ... anyway - thank you ;)
Glad to be of some help. TH-cam videos have helped do so many things over the years. It truly is a wonderful resource. Cheers.
Nice Stubby Ratchet , I'm quite suprised it can lossen an axle with that small leverage
The torque settings are pretty low for the wheel.

Do you have a video for antenna ring replacement process?
Sorry never had to do that. You will probably need the special socket to remove the ignition. I got one with the kit to install my steering damper. Some guys just use Vice Grips. Do yu the BMW service DVD? It shows how to do pretty much everything.
the next two items on my list are the CD and a damper!
what brake rotors are you using? and are they good?
They were Galfer rotors. I bought them from Renazco.
www.renazcoracing.com/index.cfm?action=viewcategory&category=1936
I try to keep those guys away when I work on my own bike!
hey man, what's the name of your torque wrench? I know its snap on, but would like to know the reference if possible ;)
It is the Torque Master 9000! Kidding! I'm not sure let me check.......walking to garage..... part number Tech2RFR100.
Awesome Players awesome man, really thanks for the fast reply! ;)
like!
Galfer...already bent one...
