I HATED that my very old fashioned grandmother forced me to learn to sew, at least basic patterns. I whined, complained and generally made my teenage self a giant pain in the ass, yet she didn’t care and despite my protests she persisted. She’s been gone almost 16 years and I am so grateful for it. I was able to make almost 600 masks for the elderly in my area, and little kiddos. I also taught a few teenagers from my church how to thread a sewing machine, cut and pin a pattern and sew a mask via Zoom. The group of four girls and two boys made almost 1000 masks between them. Thanks Nana, I’m sorry I was an asshole as a teenager.
All teenagers are assholes at some point and I think that's ok, its almost a rite of passage 😂 but you stuck with it and learnt and have been able to help others by passing on a piece of your Nana's legacy x
It is so infuriating when people go through the trouble of wearing the mask and then TAKE IT OFF TO SNEEZE OR COUGH??? It's like, what did you think the mask was FOR???
I carry a spare mask or two in my pocket to work in case I sneeze as I'm a chain sneezer (10-15 times in a row). I can change it out and have fresh one to put on. Thankfully they're not the gross snotty sneezes but still....a clean mask is still a godsend. And my masks are immediately put in a mesh zipper bag for the laundry when I get home. Any errand I leave the house for gets a fresh mask so I try to run them all at once and always have a spare in my pocket. Im so glad I have a lot of masks and a washer dryer available. Anytime something goes into the laundry my mask bag goes in as well.
@@irisl2508 Please tell me the mesh bag is inside of something like a ziploc bag? LOL as a fellow chain sneezer (love that term btw) I'd want my sneezes well sealed. ;)
@@starbug3408 Thankfully I have only hade a couple of mask chain sneezes. I have a ziplock baggie I carry with me just in case I need to put a sneezed in mask in it. The mesh bag is a mesh laundry bag used to launder delicate items in the washer. Also keeps the maskes together in the washer/dryer. I probably have about 30 washable masks but every time I do laundry, which is often, that bag goes in. Often if I have two loads it gets washed twice.
Here in France, there is a wedding dress boutique that is held by to old women, they of course had to shut down during lockdown, so what they did with their free time was making masks according to the wedding dresses. They said in the interview "we know they are not effective but you can wear them over a real one and that way it looks fashionable on your wedding day!" I thought that was so cute! XD Other than that I saw a woman wear her mask vertically, so it made a big bulge in the front of her face and was completely ridiculous since everything could go anywhere that way... My little brother (almost 11) is always looking at the people who wear their masks under their chins "oh look another person who thinks a mask is a scarf!" I really want to facepalm myself into oblivion with all those people who don't get how to wear a mask correctly...
I love France and French people, but, like everyone else, you have your "buttheads". The two old women are cute and forward thinking. God bless them. Be safe Antje. Cheers.
Une fois j'ai vu un mec porter son masque au poignet, j'ai sorti "Je pense qu'il respire par là" XD One time I saw a guy wearing his mask on his wrist and I said "I think he breathes through there" XD
also, I think that people should always wear masks when they are sick, no matter if there is a pandemic or not. Just to be nice and don't infect others.
Because I live with two immune compromised people (humans yuck), when I think I'm sick (which, thankfully, is very rare) I self isolate for 2 weeks. I eat ice cream, binge watch old movies etc. That's likely not possible for everyone butt (hehee) for me, however, it's easy. I work from home on computer. Just try to find something comparable. Oh like wearing a mask? Cheers kagaminek
When I was a kid, it was a rule in our family: to wear a mask in case of illness. Also, we were taught that it is irresponsible to go to school, to work, or any other public place if you are ill. I still follow this. If you have flu or a cold it is not enough to take a pill to be able to go out as if you were not ill because "not feeling symptoms" doesn't mean "not having a virus". Not sure why, but people think being sick isn't a good reason not to go to work.
I mean... there is also the no mask at all crew. They aren't just ... um.. shall we say mistaken about the efficacy of their unsatisfactory mask? They are intentionally not wearing one u__u
It's so fun because lockdown should never have ended but because the government is run by incompetent individuals and the crazies who think being asked to give a shit about other people is tyranny...
"Cant breathe more than 20 minutes with a mask" Me. At 13 year old wish Chronic illness: goes to school for 8 hours and only taking off my mask to eat 👁👄👁
The worst mask protocol I've seen is at my endocrinologist's office, where the reception staff only put their masks on when they leave the desk. It's so stressful and inconsiderate. Masks don't actually do a great job of protecting the wearer but do a very good job of keeping the wearer from exposing the people around them. So it only really helps if everyone who is physically able to is wearing one. Also, as an autistic person with pretty severe asthma and POTS, just wear a mask you guys, if I can do it almost anyone can.
Hi! I have anxiety and asthma and I have problems wearing my mask. Did you use any trick to get used to it? I'm trying to train myself but it is not working.
Autistic asthmatic here as well, some days I just can't stand to wear mine and end up sitting at home wishing I could have some tea but I can't because I couldn't put my mask on to go shopping. And then when I go out I get to see all the idiots treat me like an over cautious weirdo.
Elena Günter Lopez you could visualise the virus laden particles in the air and move into your airways, and remember that the mask and hand washing are the only ways you are going to stop it from infecting you. My father has been alcoholic for over 50 years (74yrs old) and a germophobe, he hasn’t had a drink since lockdown number one, due to his fear of germs being more overpowering than his alcoholism. Who would have thought anxiety and fear would actually be helping him stay alive.
Elena Günter Lopez I have kn-95 masks that are comfortable to me. Maybe order yourself somd of those online and see if they are comfortable (I spent 2-days in one moving a 2 bedroom apartment into storage in D.C. July!)
@@ElenaLopezSotelo Have you tried a calmative from your GP along with the counting trick? The counting trick: Put the mask on and agree that you can take it off once you hit x number. Over time gradually increase that number (within what you can tolerate) until you can manage for reasonable short trips with it on. Fathering Autism on TH-cam uses that method with his non verbal autistic daughter Abbie who cannot stand anything on her head or her face due to sensory issues. Speaking as someone with both asthma and anxiety I find the focus change of the counting trick quite helpful. I tend to walk with a cane due to POTS so usually I just focus on the ticking rhythm of my cane when walking. It's like a metronome and is mildly hypnotic if I can get my focus right. I wish you luck.
I hope the crocheted mask was more of an overlay for an actual mask, just so she can coordinate. In which case, love that idea. ETA: Same with all the other meshy/lacey ones.
I used to wear a mask or gas mask, goggles, and a full clean-suit for anywhere from 9 to 12 hours a day in 105 degree heat....... now I don't because my industry is shut down.... mostly because these jerks wont wear one for 20 minutes.
Ok I don’t know what your industry is or even what country your in but I used to be the safety coordinator at my old job and I know there were laws a giants being in suits like that in that kind of heat especially for that long. Who’s looking out for you?! As for masks ya I have asthma chronic bronchitis and a condition that causes me to lose my equilibrium due to a head injury. I still wear a mask at work and in public. That is not to say that there are not people that truly can’t wear masks and it’s sad that antimaskers are trying to take advantage and making it hard for the truly disabled
I’ve got a friend who’s got a history of complex trauma, who initially couldn’t wear a mask as having her mouth/face covered triggered panic attacks, making face-masks impossible for her. Since lockdowns started over here in Australia, she & her trauma support group (which is now meeting online, rather than IRL), many of whom experienced a similar aversion to the sensations of mask-wearing, have been catching up once a week via Zoom to gradually build their enduring to wearing masks, by gradually wearing them for longer & longer each week, while encouraging each other & talking through any discomfort they experience. Love it! ❤️
That is impressive!!! Good on them for trying so hard!! I have a friend in the same situation and she can now wear the bandana style mask for a grocery trip. I am so proud of her!!
@@squidge125 yes!!! They are a life saver because I was having so much trouble wearing one because of my allergies and feeling like I was suffocating, plus living in the heat of New Orleans doesn’t help. I sucked it up and wore them but my 16 yr old has autism and it causes him to have sensory issues and he would freak out over them constantly touching his face and he also felt like he was suffocating. My mom found the cage things on amazon and it was like 12 for $6.99 I believe. She has sat and sewn them into everyone’s masks for us.
If it's the sensation of fabric pressing against her face that is the problem, there are models of masks out there that have plastic or silicone cages that will keep the material off her face
Lol well it’s in my Etsy shop, if you’re serious about love/hating it. Www.etsy.com/shop/NerdyNoveltyDesign Plus it’s handmade by me. The image she showed is actually one that someone had printed in China with my fabric I designed :(
Normally I avoid saying this kind of thing, but in this case it may be true for some people. I think the whole "not being able to breathe in a mask" may be more of a psychological thing because your body is panicking slightly with something over your mouth and nose. I personally *hate* wearing scarves in the winter because I hate having things around my neck and over my face and I had a little trouble with masks at first. But then I got used to it and it's not an issue for me. (of course there may disabilities or conditions that do cause other issues)
100% this! My manager has COPD and severe asthma, and she can wear her mask perfectly. She's been keeping her inhaler on her, but other than that she's had minimal issues. Once you get used to it, it isn't that bad
I feel that many who complain about masks have never suffered through any conditions or allergies. The difficulties when breathings, they don't know any. I wasn't a fan of masks either, always thought it was hard to breathe till I started suffering from seasonal allergies. Then only wearing masks would help me breath without sneezing up a waterfall. And the relief of not having to hold in a cough in the public is wonderful. If it's psychological, one should work through it during the absolute necessary times such as now. Or just stay at home. And people who scream they've preexisting condition when requested to wear masks, should not even be outside. Preexisting conditions=more risks.
I know that I can breathe perfectly well through my mask, even when I wear them for hours. Sometimes, I don't even notice them anymore. But I have a history of panic attacks. They are thankfully not as frequent as a few years ago but I still have them now and then. And I realized that I reaaaally struggle to breathe and keep the mask on whenever I am panicking. It really exacerbates the panic. I still keep it on in those sitiations and try to get somewhere where I can take it off safely. Just wanted to write that because it really shows that in my case, the breathing problems definitively are only psychological.
@@Jannyl13 I don't know you but I feel really proud of you. That's why I think those complaining about wearing masks are just brainless cowards, and just plain selfish. People who actually has psychological fears or preexisting conditions would endure through masks to keep both themselves and everyone safe. And the breach on freedom and being oppressed? How previledged and safe in a country you have to be to think a pesky little mask in oppression?
I feel like I do have trouble breathing with it, because everytime I’m wearing it for 3+ hours I get headaches. Of course, that doesn’t stop me from wearing it, but it is bothersome
I allowed myself to laugh at this video without thinking too deeply that some of the individuals who created and bought those masks will be voting in the U.S. national election November 3 2020. Japanese citizens have been wearing masks for years. Their viewpoint is that if one is feeling ill, the honorable thing to do is to protect strangers and friends from also being infected. Odd how the concept of empathy and science seems to be eluding certain citizens of the U.S. (my nationality). All that being said, I need more humor in my life, thank you Jessica.
This. I’m usually quick to point out to people exactly this - And how likewise after the initial explosion cases have been fairly low in countries like Japan (with most case influxes occurring on US military bases...I wonder why /gasp/) - but it usually gets shrugged off as an exception or just say, “shut up, weeb.” Being a scientist and also studying anthropology be damned, I guess. Nonetheless, why we can’t step off of our pedestal of supposedly being the “best country in the world” to take heed from the experiences of other countries around us just baffles me.
I'd rather people wore a tacky/weird/cheesy but functional face mask than none at all but some of these woof! 😂 I have a pokemon one and a baby yoda print one coming in the mail. Due to medical trauma I like colorful and playful masks helps make me feel like a person and not a patient.
My husbands grandma is a below nose. She says "I just won't breathe out of my nose"... I dont go out with her after that.... Although I'm generally not going out at all.... just grocery. Meanwhile I still sneeze into my elbow even though my mask is covering my sneezing area haha
My friend started calling people who walk around with their nose sticking out "dickmask" or "dickface" because it looks like someone's junk hanging out. Apparently telling people that this is what they're being called by other people who see them like that in public is super effective to get them to stop it.
@@ArtemisScribe oh I love that! However I am living with my catholic grandmother-in-law and I dont think that particular way of calling out is appropriate. Honestly she generally isn't out in public much and every time I am im basically wagging my disappointed finger at her.
As a person with severe suffocation trauma (including, but not limited to: Almost drowning twice, getting caught in quicksand twice, and sexual assault)... I absolutely cannot wear masks without having a severe trauma response. I hyperventilate to the point that my mask lifts off of my face. So, thank you for saying people like me don't deserve judgement. And can I just say, I am incredibly angry about anti-maskers? Like, I am incensed. It is their fault that when I have to go out in public (which I've done a total of 5 times this year) I am met with withering looks, and vitriol. Maybe if anti-maskers weren't so obnoxiously ableist, the dirty looks I get in public wouldn't be so constant. I already got dirty looks for being a young disabled person. It's. so. much. worse. now. I was literally turned away from the emergency room and denied medical treatment because I can't wear a mask. They kept insisting I put it on, and when that clearly only caused me more distress and hyperventilation, they acquiesced and told me to hold it over my face. That still had me in flashbacks, hyperventilating and spewing germ breath all over the waiting room. For a full hour. When the nurse came to grab me so they could treat me, she accused me of being drunk, asked me if I could walk, and told me to get out of the wheelchair and use my rollator to follow her (a wheelchair hospital staff gave to me; I didn't even ask for it). I couldn't have walked in the midst of a severe panic response, and even if I was calm it would have been immensely painful (I need a wheelchair, I just can't afford one). When I told her that I could not hold the mask in front of my face and use my rollator, she informed me they would not treat me without a mask, and that they wouldn't treat me unless I was calm. I can either wear a mask, or be calm. You cannot have both. I have no doubt that when people see me in public (the very, very few that do), they just assume I'm an anti-masker, without bothering to look at context clues. I use a rollator, and even that I visibly struggle with. I am disabled, I have a heart condition, and so, I am very much at risk for covid. I've seen a total of 10 people (excluding medical professionals) since February. Most of those, I didn't have any choice in seeing (a.k.a. my roommate had to move, is also physically disabled, and needed friends to help). I am being more responsible with my health and the health of people around me during this pandemic the most people who can wear masks are. I am taking this more seriously than most people who are even wearing masks consistently and responsibly. And my worst fear isn't even contracting the virus. It's me contracting it, unknowingly spreading it, and accidentally killing someone without even having the privilege of knowing I caused that death. I am assumed to be anti masker, assumed to be part of a movement that would happily have me dead if it meant that the economy could recover, and that assumption has led to me being discriminated against. And I don't know the solution, because there are people who would try to fake exactly what I went through, just because they don't like wearing masks. And in the same way severely immunocompromised people rely on people who can be vaccinated, to get vaccinated... People like me? We 100% rely on people who can wear masks to do so. Because I can't, and I do have a weakened immune system. Chances are, if I do have the virus, I contracted it because that hospital didn't have proper safety measures in place for me, staff, or the other patients trying to get care. And not wearing a mask, contributing to the anti mask movement, it hurts everybody. The only thing that helps is the virus. Every single transmission of this virus reduces the chances that a vaccine, if it is possible, will be at all effective. It increases the chances that this virus will learn how to bypass the safety measures we have in place. Viruses are incredibly good at mutating, and they mutate every time a transmission happens. Because the virus has to mutate in order to effectively hack into your cells and DNA structure. There have already been documented cases of mask resistant strains of the SARS-CoV-2. And this particular virus? It doesn't just hack into your cells to replicate itself. It hacks into your cells, and tells your DNA to create other, naturally occurring cells in your body at a greater rate that will produce a more viable living environment for the virus inside of your body. This virus is terrifying. It can exsanguinate you without spilling a single drop of blood. It is not just the disabled who will die. And it will, likely, disable you, too.
@@agypsycircle yeah, I was gonna say the same thing, since face sheilds don't disrupt breathing. I don't know if that's necessarily an option, but it might make life a little easier? Or, at least, stop nurses from freaking out on you since it sounds like you have to go to hospital fairly frequently. It might also protect you a little more, since you have a heart condition? Regardless, it's utter bs to treat someone like that as a nurse and seeing a disabled person having a panic attack, not cool for that nurse to do.
I’m so sorry you have to experience those things.. that is horrible... what if you had a button or sticker on your shirt or coat saying something like “can’t wear mask due to health reasons.” “Not anti-mask”.. even though that is medical information that really should be none of their business...
I'm sorry you have to go through this. Didn't the nurse see you were in distress when they told you to wear a mask? I would also advise you to see if face shields are an option for you. I hope you get through everything ok.
@@agypsycircle Hi! I just like to let you know, g*psy is a slur that has been historically used to discriminate against Romani people. I don't know if you are Roma or not, but if you're not I would seriously consider changing your channel name to something that doesn't include a racial slur. Unfortunately, face-shields have been proven to be completely ineffective unless used in conjunction with a good quality mask. There have been studies done on recent outbreaks (the first that comes to mind is an outbreak at a restaurant). The findings from that study in particular pretty much conclusively debunked the idea that face shields are effective personal protective equipment without also wearing a mask. The only people people who were infected by the coronavirus in that outbreak were people who were not wearing masks. To put it more clearly: most people not wearing masks, face shield or not, ended up testing positive for the virus. The main function of face shields is to prevent your mask from becoming contaminated. It is a splatter barrier, it does not prevent aerosolized viral loads from being breathed in. It prevents the splatter (from someone sneezing/coughing/etc.) from saturating your mask, which lowers your chance of being infected at close contact. Without a mask, face shields do absolutely nothing to protect you.
Tbh we’re not, our government would just rather let all the disabled and elderly people die and risk wiping out the entire country than continue paying people who aren’t able to work in a lockdown even though their still having to do so. I don’t see it being too long before we have another lockdown :/
me, hearing jessica complain about lockdown: oh! how nice! a-a lockdown? a government that takes a deadly virus seriously? humans who aren’t trying to protest a virus? *cries*
@@peachproblem2466 oh we still have those idiots protesting it, just most people can’t be bothered going out anymore so there’s less of them actually on the streets 😂
I report them every time I see them for selling illegal products unless they clearly state that they are meant to be worn over effective masks for fashion purposes!
This is good to know. I have seen “sheer” “breathable” masks that are “so easy to breath through” and “don’t feel like I’m wearing a mask at all” on Etsy, but I didn’t know that we could report them. One listing even used scientific jargon to disclaim that “it isn’t 100% effective” yet NEVER mentioning that it is literally 0% effective compared to a medical mask or even a regular 2 layer cotton fabric with a normal thread weave. Jeez! Do we need to start having thread counts on masks now??
Where I live I am super isolated, but when I do go to the nearest town for supply pick up I wear a mask. Earlier this summer, I had to fly to an even bigger city and it was a 2 hour flight, I wore a mask the entire time and actually fell asleep without any issues. While mask wearing is a tad uncomfortable - it's a whole lot better than respirators and life support medical intervention. Thank you Jessica for all your great videos. They really add to my week!
Autistic mask wearer here; (I preface this by saying I'm not judging ANYONE who absolutely can't wear a mask for sensory reasons) but here's some tips to make it more bearable. A MASK WEARING GUIDE FOR ASPIES EDIT: I didn't mention this but almost all of my masks are handmade either by family friends or myself. And generally speaking making your own mask if you have sewing skills or have someone else do it that you know is absolutely the best way. That way you can get the materials, patterns, colors, and fit perfect for YOU. In addition it's better for the environment and you don't risk taking away from people who need to purchase them. There are tutorials and instructions online for different fits and methods that are shockingly easy. - try out lots of different fits and types and find what works best for you (as long as they are effective) personally I like tie on masks that are more shaped to the face so you are completely covered but your nose has room and there isn't as much pressure on your face. Standard disposable masks typically feel less restricting and are looser if that's a big issue but for me the fact they are looser just kind of annoys me. Find your preferences! -WASH FABRIC MASKS OFTEN this goes for everyone but especially Aspies, It reduces any itchiness get a bunch of them so that you can constantly have some washing. If you like variety get a bunch of different colors and fits or get a bunch of the same whatever works -N95's and other similar masks that aren't as flush to the face may be more comfortable as well as more effective! -if you are going to be out for a while make sure you're giving yourself breaks when appropriate. (Outside when non-crowded, in the car, duck into a bathroom for a bit, maybe just an empty section of the store) obviously do this in moderation depending on the situation but even a couple seconds seems to help. -dont wear lipstick or lip gloss under your mask, I love lipstick but it builds up fast and and can make the mask itchier and more moist faster. I hope this helps some people out there!
I’m making my autistic kids silk lined masks. Silk is apparently a great filter when combined with cotton and a filter. They have sensory issues with fabric but love silk. Sometimes it’s just about finding the right fabric for the part that touches your face
Autistic person here, I tried all of these (except for the last one since I don’t wear makeup), they didn’t work for me, so now I don’t go out even nearly as much. If you’ve tried everything and still can’t wear a mask, the absolute least you can do is only go out when you need to, or pay more attention to social distancing.
Re the tightness on your nose/face in general, there are shaped masks with a pleat in the top and a separate panel under the chin and I've found them so comfortable I even forgot I had it on for a moment 😅
Earlier today I had an online class in surgery (fifth year in faculty of medicine) and our professor had a 5 minute rant in the middle of the lecture about masks, not wearing masks, wearing masks improperly and especially medical personel wearing them improperly. He also kindly reminded us that, since majority of people brathe trough the nose, we deffinitelly SHOULD cover the nose. Gods, someone should record the man and put it on repeat in every bus here.
I'm a nurse. I have ranted about this for years. People just holding the mask in frony of the face instead of just tying it on (like in Grey's Anatomy) has confused the public way too much I think. And yes, I have seen real doctors not using the mask properly
@@julianamagg3177 I personally see myself as someone who has to be an example. Yes, I'm only a student still and won't be a doctor for two years but people already see me as someone with some level of authority on medical issues. And, as much as I'm aware they are overestimating my knowledge I have or have to have (people don't seem to understand that med student doesn't equeal a specialist in every field od medicine ever) this one thing is the least I can do. Let alone if I were a nurse, or a doctor or someone with ACTUAL authority.
Tldr: confront obvious mask idiots, please! (Obviously hidden conditions exist but I mean people who are very obviously wearing them incorrectly or who you know for certain have no reason to not wear one) I work in a small supermarket, but because of disputes between our union and the government we are not allowed to confront people on masks. However, about a month ago two teenage girls came in without masks. I was trying to hold myself back from saying something when an old lady started fully going off at them about how it was because of people like them that she had to stay inside and shame on them. It got to the point where I probably should have said something, but honestly she was nailing it so I let her continue and discretely thanked her after they left (shouting 'I'm not staying here' to which she replied 'good, that's the point you shouldn't be in here like that').
Yes!! I too will go off when I see people not wearing masks at a store. I let them know how inappropriate it is. I know store clerks often can’t. They are told not to because they are at risk of workplace violence. Whatever! I am a nurse and tell it like it is! Put a (quality) mask on it!!
Recently I was doing a groceries run in a shop I shan't name for privacy reasons. I am high risk so we went early to avoid the crowds. Subsequently the teller was still opening her till when we got to it to pay. I noticed that her face mask was under her nose and flat refused to go closer than 7 feet until she put it on her face. She apologised profusely and explained that she had severe asthma and could not breathe through the mask so she wore it over her mouth but under her nose. She did, however, have an additional face shield which she wore over her entire face to prevent any particles breathed out from getting beyond her in my general direction. Once she had that on I was able to proceed with checkout and we chatted about how much it sux that we both have asthma and struggle so much in crowded areas. Generally speaking I refuse to approach any till where the teller is not wearing their mask properly over both mouth and nose. I refuse to shut up over it, much to the chagrin of my partner, because this is my life on the line here.
By-law mandating face coverings in buildings and on transit has immensely helped the situation. It allows businesses and employees to insist they wear a face covering (shields are generally accepted). If your business has online ordering, or any type of personal shoppers who can serve someone without allowing them in the building, that’s still accessible accommodation. So anti-maskers can go to hell, and people with reasons, don’t have to be put at risk being indoors with other people.
Oh my goodness my mom had a patient awhile ago and she asked the patient to pull the mask up to cover his nose and he pulled it over his nose and exposed his mouth and gave her this smug look. She said, “You know exactly what I meant. Fix it. Nobody has the time or energy here to deal with that kind of nonsense.”
OMG right?! We can't either and it can be infuriating. Shoppers will blatantly pull their mask down off their face and then quickly pull it back up when someome gets near.....or not wear one at all, just pull their shirt over their face and hold it there. All we can do is hope management see them and says something. Now fall is here and I'm hearing people coughing. Do they have The 'Rona, a cold, or allergies? Fun times 😷😷
Word. I have a plastic shield in front of my window, thankfully. But let me tell you...it got so gross with people's spit on it by the time my shift was done. Wear your mask, people!!
Crochet masks are fine as long as they’re lined with the correct types of fabric, as well as the correct number of layers. (three layers of 100% cotton woven fabric for example)
I like wearing a mask. It's like a hug on my face. Also I now have 7 different designs for various outfits/occasions. A leafy one for when I go out to the park, one with atoms when I feel studious, a night one for when it's dark out, etc.
I haven't left the house, or had anyone enter, since March and seeing all these numpties who just don't give a toss about anything or anyone break my heart. I miss my grandson, I miss being able to sit outdoors and enjoy the sounds and smells of nature. But no. Shielding it is. And I am not opposed to the shielding, but to those who make this drag on forever and ever just so they won't have to wear a sodding mask. Great vid, Jessica! Thank you for all the hard work you put in xx
As a perfectly healthy person, young, lowest of low risk of who lives with very high risk people IT ISNT ABOUT YOU WEAR YOUR MASK and have a lovely day. Also, don’t go out if you don’t have to and physical distance. I know this sucks but it won’t suck nearly so bad if everyone works together and protects each other where they can.

I feel so seen right now. Well done to anyone who can wear a mask for 12 hrs a day and not even notice but I genuinely start to get really claustrophobic after about 30 or 40 minutes so I just go out when I absolutely need to for short periods. So if your like me and hate wearing them then don’t go out for long periods of time, if you drive go to your car for breaks etc... it’s annoying but not that hard so
My mother has a similar problem. she can't really breathe in a mask or any less-ventilated area for that matter (i think it has something to do with decreased lung capacity and old age maybe) but she too doesn't go out unless absolutely necessary. however she have us all to help her with all the shopping and going out affairs and when she does go out we use our own car. it must be hard for people who can't get help from others and must leave their house more.
Honestly the anxiety of wearing a mask was the worst part for me. I work in a shop and recently had to start wearing a mask (admittedly only for 6-9 hours a day) and I've mostly got used to it. The worst part now is the smell of my breath!
Rachel Recycles I haven’t but maybe I should ? I actually invested in a silk mask which I find much easier to wear, it’s feels less heavy and is a life saver for my skin!
My favorite is when people come at me with the, "It will never fully go away, are you just gonna wear a mask in public for the rest of your life??" lolllll bruh, I have MCAS and scents are my biggest mast cell trigger. I've already been wearing a mask in public for years, and yes I will absolutely continue to wear one in public for the rest of my life. Literally WHY are people trying to shame others for 1. Being cautious, and 2. Doing what they can to protect themselves and those around them? What a weird, weird thing to try to shame someone for.
i live in florida and am immunocompromised. the mask mandate was lifted and i try to stay inside as much as possible. i hate it here because no one cares. no one social distances, hardly anyone wears masks, and i've had people coUGH ON ME when i asked them to put their mask on (when i was working). i love face masks because it's another way to coordinate an outfit and i'm very self-conscious of my smile and jawline. i also don't get why people with asthma say they can't breathe wearing one. i get it if you have anxiety but asthma? i know several people with severe asthma who are wearing masks for several hours at a time.
My kitten sat watching this with me, he agrees with all of Jessica's statements. My babey boy Geralt says to wear proper masks and to wear them correctly!! fun story: when I was in college I had a weekend where I was miserably sick, I believe I had the flu but was too sick to go to the doctor. I had class Monday morning, and my school has a dr's office on the way there. I had my mom stop there and get me a mask so that I didn't spread whatever I had while I was going to classes. My English teacher asked what it was about, I told him I was sick but still wanted to come to class, he thanked me for wearing the mask and told me that it was very considerate of me to do. I didn't understand then, and I still don't understand now, why it was considerate. I was doing what made sense to do and what was right to do. I didn't want to get others sick so I wore a mask. (i'm autistic so if someone can explain why it's considerate to me please do)
It's just that you're thinking about others and trying not to get them sick. Some people only wear them to protect themselves. Other people don't wear them because they think the virus won't effect them, so it's not their problem. Thinking ahead enough to recognize that you're trying to keep other people from getting is is being considerate.
This is so entertaining yet to the point. 😂 I always find myself judging people that don't necessarily have their nose out, but the mask is barely hanging on to it because it just doesn't fit well. If you have to touch the mask every 5 seconds to pull it up, that's probably not thaaat great and I guess most people should have had enough time to find well fitting masks since March. 😬 I learned how to sew masks and there are so many different styles and sizes.
I’ve decided that the Chinese have it right. I’m wearing a mask from now on! I’m not only old, overweight, but I have 2 diseases that will help end my days. I have a new mask that has some red sequins on it. How exciting.
2020 started off with wild fires in Australia with a smoke ploom large enough to be seen in New Zealand and that was the high point so 1 star from me to.
Tash McBain as long as those idiots on the beach the other day don't turn into a super spreader event, Melbourne is doing really well. Please stay strong down there!
After a 15 minute talk on websites to support our mental health in these trying times of covid, my professors introduced our design brief, which is about designing buildings for covid. How did it not occur to them that spending the next six months hyperfocusing on the current Crisis(TM) may not be good for our mental health? The reading list I worked my way through today was comprised of all the covid thinkpieces I have stopped reading because they were fuelling my depressive episode. It's day 1 of this six month assignment and I feel like crap. Was very glad to see lovely Jessica pop up in my notifications :) Also, the nose hanging out thing drives me crazy too! It makes me more mad than when someone isn't wearing a mask. Also, while the mask is fine for my sensory issues, the glasses fog from the mask very much is not. But it's not so uncomfortable that I'm willing to kill or die for it so I'm watching the numbers and despairing. No one else seems to be noticing or caring. Please someone tell me I'm not alone
You are not alone. The nose thing drives me mental and all the articles and opinions about covid just make it impossible to feel positive about anything. And I had problems with my glasses fogging until I changed mask styles.
Rebecca Hurford - you are not alone. I am watching the numbers rise and I just feel despair too. I am also constantly worried that me and my wife will pick up Covid on her twice monthly hospital appointments. Sometimes I feel it's all too much. I am doing everything I can do to protect us but my wife has memory issues and I can't watch her every minute of the day when we are in the hospital. I am personally terrified of picking it up because neither of us will survive it due to age and health issues. It's dreadful!! Keep safe and well xx
For the glasses fog I’ve found that getting a really good seal is the best way to avoid it, with a nose wire and a mask that’s entirely flush to my face, but I know I am lucky that me and my mom spent a lot of time perfecting our mask patterns to custom fit each family member. I’ve heard about glasses spray/diy with dish soap but haven’t tried it, but another thing that sometimes works is to just put my glasses on top of my mask where it bridges my nose if there’s only an okay seal. (Of course if you wear your mask low on your nose this might not work so well)
Honestly, those lace masks would've been so good with a contrasting cloth layer underneath the lace! Still have the lingerie look, but also, actual protection
to everyone that complains about not being able to breathe in a mask: I worked outside, the entire summer, in 100+ degree heat advisories in a three-layer mask. you can breathe. edit: this comment is disregarding those with sensory issues that would make wearing a mask very difficult, I am mainly referring to the common argument I heard that it was too hot
That's nice for you. However, just because you or I are able to do something doesn't mean everybody can. I can walk, I can see, I can hear. Somehow, wheelchair users, blind and deaf people still exist. So don't judge someone for what they can or cannot do. If someone can't wear a mask but does everything they can to still protect themselves and others, that's fine. It's the people who choose to be inconsiderate and endanger others who are the problem (and many of them don't even *claim* to be unable to wear a mask, they just make a point of showing off their defiance).
Latreylantras Yes, good point. People with sensory issues definitely have problems I don’t that wouldn’t allow them to be able to wear a mask, and I don’t fault them for not doing so. I was just referring to the common “I can’t breathe” argument given by a lot of able-bodied people solely because they don’t want to wear a mask and disregard the risks associated.
My best solution in the heat has been making my masks with a flannel lining. It's absorbent and doesn't get muggy as fast as plain cotton. And it filters out allergens and environmental humidity!
As an aspie with ADHD and anxiety, I absolutely love the masks. IDK why but I'm much more comfortable in public than I was pre-masks. I want to send you an IG photo of me so you can critique my mask. Just for fun. It's quite pretty!
yeah I'm actually a big fan. I get to hide my weird expressions and acne and if i haven't been maintaining my facial hair ... I hope it stays socially acceptable
I like them too!❤ I'm also on the spectrum and my face falls into weird expressions when my mind wanders and I'm saving a fortune by not wearing lipstick! ☺
Seeing all these bad masks is weird cause our situation is so different in australia. or at least victoria?? We had a big spike of cases and restrictions got TIGHT, now you get a pretty sizeable fine for not wearing a mask in public and i haven't seen a single person who wasn't wearing a mask (except my parents, who i live with) in weeks now. Haven't seen any mesh masks or even anybody wearing masks incorrectly, probably because theres pretty much 24/7 police patrols out for every suburb, and they immediately fine anyone they see not wearing a mask. We do have some anti-maskers (im looking directly at you, my conspiracy theorist aunty), and they tried to have a protest in the cbd under the guise of "they can't fine us all!!" but like 100 people showed up and the police immediately arrested all of them, and fined them, not just for not wearing masks, but for also leaving the permitted 5km radius of their homes, gathering outside in a group larger than 10, and a bunch of other shit. Ever since, the Victorian anti-maskers have just bitterly stayed inside posting angrily on social media 🙃 Anyways our cases are still higher than I'd like them to be (but I guess considering other countries' numbers, 7 new cases in my state today is pretty okay) but my 5km area is at least doing pretty good lmaoo
That’s so interesting! As someone in NSW, we’re constantly bombarded with news about the huge protests being planned or going on in Melbourne, without footage, we’re all being told that no one in Melbourne is cooperating
The US has never tried to limit people's travel area. The lack of actual restrictive legislation has led people to not believe the real hazards. We got nothing but mixed messages from the beginning, due to Trump politicizing it. A new, fun way for him to toy with Americans and make them fight each other. There is nothing bad enough in existence that could happen to him, to make up for what he's done to our country due to his selfishness and stupidity.
I had the good luck to be outside of Victoria when the lockdown hit. With my work online and family to stay with I have decided to wait a while to return. I really feel for all my friends back home who are going through it right now. Cheers to one new case today!
As a person who's immunocompromised, I strongly relate to Jessica's cabin fever. Have you tried going out to places that aren't really crowded e.g. quiet beaches? Just to have a change of scenery from time to time
I work in retail and have to wear a mask for 6+ hours, I make a game about horrible/memorable masks I can see. The winner is a completely sheer loosely woven mask the says 'tyranny' on it, it got first as it 1) does not protect anyone whatsoever and 2) made me realize that if we (America) was told to turn off our lights to throw off the navigation of Nazi bombers in WW2, we would in fact have people with their lights on saying that it is their right. Second place is one that says 'this mask is useless' it got second as it was a real mask and did not have gauze
a lot of those could be really pretty fashion accessories OVER actually masks. I can see that becoming a thing, fashion-wise. no reason you can't wear last over a decent mask to dress it up for an outdoor socially distanced family only wedding I suppose. If it'll make more people wear masks that work, i'm all in favor of lacy over-mask masks. The net one actually gives me an idea, though, as an over mask-mask. something like that but made of a rigid material that actually holds a mask more tightly to your face might be really good and make loose fitting masks more effective. Might look a little hannibal lector-y but
One time a few months ago I went to Lowe’s because I needed to grab some stuff. I walked into an isle that had this group of 2-3 guys already in it. The isle was pretty wide so I went in anyway. One of the guys had a mask but wasn’t wearing it. We made eye contact I gave him, what my family calls, The Stare. (Me my dad and grandfather all have the stare we unconsciously do when we don’t like people that scares them). He pulled up him mask immediately. I laughed so hard after the fact because he was probably 6’ and 200lbs, while I’m 5’3” and 140lbs. This moment is honestly one of the highlights of my life.
I'm early to Jessica's video for once!! I was sick (Not COVID, don't worry all) a few weeks ago and binging this channel really helped me get through it. Thank you, Jessica!!
Jessica is the one person I will never get tired of hearing a PSA from . Shielding is tough and giving voice to the angst against antimaskers does help the rage.
When people don't think they need to cover their noses with their masks, I always wonder if they have thought critically about how covid testing works and what that means about their noses or if they just don't care.
I think they just don't care. I asked a guy on the bus to put his mask over his nose as well as his mouth, and he went "but that fogs up my glasses!" (I'm also a glasses-wearer). Idiot.
I cannot stress enough how much your videos are. You, Jessica and Claudia, have talked me down from the ledge several times. I am a 62 year old butch. My wife and I have raised our 6 children. Arlene , my wife is a retired university professor and chair of Women's and Gender Studies department @ William Paterson University. I'm an artist who can no longer see well enough or use my hands in the way they once did. I've been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. That's what they call it, because in the U.S. , the insurance companies will pay for it only with a diagnosis. I'm not sure what my issues are. I only know that we don't know what the issue is! Your vids are spot on! Well done! Not only do they help me cope with my depression and anxiety about my health, but more importantly for me, they are invaluable tool to explain to others what I am experiencing. You are both so upbeat and entertaining that I don't have a problem getting them to watch! Your vid about feeling useless is saved on my phone. I go to it often. I'm not quite homebound, but close. The pandemic has made things a little bit more interesting! I was having trouble with pain meds. They are worse than adderall!!!! I go without sleep for 24, 48, and 72 hours in the worst case. Then I sleep for 24 hours. I have hallucinations!! Watching a physically mess pacing and bouncing off the walls is sad. But, now I can go to one of your videos and it really helps! Claudia, you remind me of my Arlene. Without her I would eat, sleep, take my meds. She leaves fruit and vegetables all cut up and pretty easy to get to. Basically I have to trip over it, then I see and eat. Something to do. Jessica you're amazing.
My friend has a mask that has a picture of a dumpster on fire and says 2020. Its not super good because there is a large gap at the bottom, but she has it hung up on her wall next to all her effective masks as a joke. It could potentially worn over a good mask if a day is being extra chaotic.
I really want to make coordinating crochet mask covers so my masks match my knit and crochet sweaters and hats. 😂 I may need more yarn...hmmmm. Just remember, in the Spanish flu pandemic, there are multiple pictures of people putting masks on their cats and dogs. 😂
Ya mention hand washing. It helps. Fun fact: its actually a spiritual teaching and value to practice hand washing and hygiene among Jewish folks (my background). This meant we died in smaller numbers in the Black Plague. Didn't help for anti Semetism, but I mean at least we didn't get sick as much or as bad. And historical lesson? Bein clean can literally save ya in an epidemic.
Jessica, could you do a video on who is and isn't exempt from mask-wearing and what that means? Obviously I don't challenge people because I'm well aware there could be something they're just not telling me (e.g. trauma response, sensory issues etc.) but at my workplace it's annoyingly common for a group of people (members of the public) to come in and I say they need to wear a mask indoors and they ALL respond with "I have asthma", "me too", and I think I'd just appreciate a good informative video and discussion on the topic? I think for obvious reasons you'd be well-placed for such a discussion, because I know you'll be kind to people that genuinely are exempt while calling out the inconsiderate ones.
@ Jessica Kellgren-Fozard Absolutely love you and the Mrs. In my state, this is a mask mandate. Social distancing is to be kept at a minimum. And it's been stated clearly that there are ZERO health issues that prevent anyone from actually wearing a mask. Now... Such as Fern H said. That I can and do support. Some guy pulled down his masks, sneezed into his hand, pulled his mask up, and then continued using the self-checkout. Touching the screen. The hubby and I both said something and did not shut up until he sanitized it. He flipped us off when he left. We didn't/don't care, the machine is usable again. The hubby went and sanitized it for a second time
@ Only 19 minutes mask breathing possible: My 88 year old, asthmatic mother is able to do so for any length of time...A tip: According to an Instagram post I *saw, Breathing through the mouth can give a feeling of short breath. This is caused by the proximity of the mask surface to the mouth. Breathing through the nose doesn't. * When I tried to go back to check the sources, I couldn't find it anymore. But in my own experience at least it works! I was breathing through the mouth and found the switch to the nose a very noticeable improvement.
I love wearing a mask! I also have OCD and social anxiety. Mask + dark sunglasses = incognito happiness I am ready for this ish to be the f over though.
I have a custom made Doctor who mask with the quote ‘love in all its forms is the modest powerful weapon we have’. I got it from Redbubble. Also what is your opinion on mental health patients being exempt from wearing mask. I have a mental health issue and I do wear a mask but I have known many people who couldn’t wear a mask as a result of their mental health disorder.
As someone with PTSD, and several comorbidities, going back to work was a mess. I was a wreck at first, but i quickly got used to it. I had a customer st work the other say tell me she couldn't wear a mask because she had anxiety. (Don't we all?) and it honestly feels... Kind of like a slap in the face to people like me who had to work to get over our struggles with masks. Who put in the work and therapy to be able to go out without risking other people. It kinda just feels like a slap, yanno? If you're not willing to wear a mask, or can't, then don't go out imo. (I also know I'm 110% biased because I've had relatives die from Covid, and I'm also mentally ill, so I don't feel like we get a pass if that makes sense?)
Niall Lay some people with mental health issues can be too anxious to wear a mask for example I knew someone who was autistic and didn’t like the feeling of the mask and it would just cause them to have a meltdown. It is dependant on the mental health condition and the person
@@xuxionhao3418 some peeps (whether its anxiety, ASD, ADHD or a variety of other conditions) may find wearing a mask traumatic for one or more of the following reasons: -they are an assault survivor and covering their mouth is triggering -covering their mouth may over stimulate them and leave them unable to cope -they may have an irrational fear of covering the face that causes panic attacks when they try and wear one Those are just a couple I can think of but I'm sure theres plenty of other reasons! Tbh the only time I judge someone is when they are wearing a face mask incorrectly ie under their nose/chin.
“People can’t breathe in masks for more than 20 minutes” Let me introduce you to all of the children in school wearing masks for 8 hours Also love you Jesica 💕
Hi Jessica! I just wanted to say that I’ve found your videos really helpful in educating myself on being more aware of ableism and adjusting how I interact with disabled people. Thank you so much! ❤️
Your videos inspired me to get tested for possible nerve disease, I have been living in fear of the diagnosis and tried to prolong the inevitable but seeing you take on who you are with pride helped me reach a tipping point if you will. I don't fear the diagnosis now, I'm ready. I apologize for making this so long but I just wanted to say thank you! ♥️
Everytime I hear someone say “I can’t breathe through them” I just breathe in a way that makes my glasses foggy and say “Well I can’t see through them but I’m still wearing them”. It gets them silent everytime.
I go to public school in person in the US and I see so many people wearing their masks without their nose in it, even when there is an adjustable nose piece to help it stay on. I wear glasses and they fog up a lot if their isn’t a nose piece, and I still leave the mask above my nose, it’s not that hard (but if you wear your mask right it should fog up unless you’re breathing hard)
OMG, the people wearing masks that keep their nose out of it....lord, I just want to shout at them, "PULL YOUR F***ING MASK UP!" Ugh. I really wish they'd make mask wearing mandatory country wide here in Switzerland, since the cases are going up again. *sigh* And I feel you about the whole Christmas thing and not being out of the house for the last 6+ months. Sometimes I feel like my wife and I are the only responsible people in our neighborhood. (And don't get me started on smokers....)
Note that a good way to check the rough level of protection of your mask(especially if you are trying to make it diy) is to hold up the individual layers to the sun and see how much light can pass through it/how much you can see through it. Good ones normally are opaque enough to not see anything though it and just a little bit of light.
These videos are so charming and so delightful. They are helping me survive the isolation of this pandemic, and I thank-you for your elegant wisdom and wit from the bottom of my heart.
I feel your pain with being bored. I was in self isolation almost two months before the first lockdown and I’ve only left the house a handful of times since when absolutely Necessary because I have a chronic illness. Most people around here refuse to wear their masks over their nose and it makes me so mad. I even got attacked for wearing a mask. A group of teens coming home from school (right after schools reopened) and when they saw me and my boyfriend in masks they ran up to us screaming that they have Covid and they were gonna infect us and then started coughing on me specifically, the one who everyone knows as “the useless disabled girl (even though I’m NB) with a broken immune system” I’ve heard them refer to me as “the one who was rushed to hospital because of a cold” and they specifically coughed on me. I hate humans
I'm sure you could report those teenagers for a crime! That is so absolutely horrible!! You don't deserve to be treated like that I'm so sorry that happened
I'm so sorry that happened to you, that is truly horrendous. I'm glad that you are well and I hope that those dingbats get what's coming to them. I send you love and moral support
Elisenda P. H. F. Unfortunately whenever I’ve reported stuff like this before (had my crutches stolen, had them forcibly taken off me, been tipped out of my wheelchair and screamed at to walk) no one takes it seriously. I’ve given up reporting this kind of thing cuz all that happens is I basically get told “your ‘disabled’ (always in air quotes because apparently it’s all in my head) so your just gonna have to live with it” or “we can’t arrest every person who sneezes on people like you”. It’s not worth it
My household is absolutely coordinating masks. We've all got a wide range to be worn with different outfits. In addition to washing our masks, we also have an alcohol solution we spray on them when we get home and then let them hang dry. I actually did make a lace overlayed mask for one of my friends, but it definitely went over the three layers I use to make masks.
‘Sneezing in a mask’ Having a tissue can be really useful for wiping down the inside of a mask if you get it wet and then ideally clean your hands or have sanitiser on hand. Although it would also depend on how water resistant the mask is, I use the N95 equivalent for my country so it’s pretty durable against sneezing, I can’t remember how durable surgical masks were. Also mask extenders and masks with headbands are _amazing_
I want to travel up the uk in march... I hope covid has been cancelled by then. Edit: I should probably clarify, I'm walking from Suffolk to skye and down the west on the way back. PLS COVID BEGONE BY MARCH!!!
I’m aware that the lacy masks are people being dumb, but I think they’d be cute over surgical masks. But, sadly, I’m sure they’re being purchased by anti-maskers
Currently live in the southern part of the US. Love hearing about people in other countries talk about preparing for a second wave when we're still in the prime of our first.
It is nice staying home where its clean and comfortable and virus free. You are as beautiful as always. My Scottish boyfriend is stuck in a second lock down. He was supposed to fly here for our vacation and he had to cancel!
You, and by proxy your nana, helped so many people. Thank you. I don't have any sewing equipment, but my mom started making masks too.
Your nana is so proud of you 😊
All teenagers are assholes at some point and I think that's ok, its almost a rite of passage 😂
but you stuck with it and learnt and have been able to help others by passing on a piece of your Nana's legacy x
Many hugs to you! Sorry, I mean... many social distanced over the internet hugs to you 🤗🤗
She clearly was a wise woman.
You never know what life throws at you, the more skills you have, the better you'll be equipped to handle everything.
I’ve seen people using this jewelry fashionable unsafe masks *ON TOP* of a real mask which is pretty cool
It would be such a hassle to clean every time though, wouldn’t it?
flowersandlemons true though
@Kate F I would honestly be surprised if they were cleaning it at all
I always thought that was the point of them.... I see now I had to much faith in humanity
Would be nice if they'd show that in the promo pictures to demonstrate rather than... you know
It is so infuriating when people go through the trouble of wearing the mask and then TAKE IT OFF TO SNEEZE OR COUGH??? It's like, what did you think the mask was FOR???
Or when they don’t cover their nose. It’s just like throwing yourself of a sinking ship with a life jacket, without putting it on. Useless.
@@irisl2508 id do the same if i had to leave my home.. my sneezes are not.. that dry xD
XD
Other than that I saw a woman wear her mask vertically, so it made a big bulge in the front of her face and was completely ridiculous since everything could go anywhere that way...
My little brother (almost 11) is always looking at the people who wear their masks under their chins "oh look another person who thinks a mask is a scarf!"
I really want to facepalm myself into oblivion with all those people who don't get how to wear a mask correctly...
Do they not get it...or just don’t care?
@@aielle84 I would say not care because France had extensive ad campaigns on how to wear them correctly ^^'
I love France and French people, but, like everyone else, you have your "buttheads". The two old women are cute and forward thinking. God bless them.
Be safe Antje.
Cheers.
Une fois j'ai vu un mec porter son masque au poignet, j'ai sorti "Je pense qu'il respire par là" XD
One time I saw a guy wearing his mask on his wrist and I said "I think he breathes through there" XD
@@IPONJ Honestly.. Too many "buttheads" to say "like everyone else"..
also, I think that people should always wear masks when they are sick, no matter if there is a pandemic or not. Just to be nice and don't infect others.
Basically what most people in some Asian countries already do. Why can't we all do that?
I think the same thing! Its just common sense
Cheers kagaminek
yeah, everyone does that in my country
When I was a kid, it was a rule in our family: to wear a mask in case of illness. Also, we were taught that it is irresponsible to go to school, to work, or any other public place if you are ill. I still follow this. If you have flu or a cold it is not enough to take a pill to be able to go out as if you were not ill because "not feeling symptoms" doesn't mean "not having a virus". Not sure why, but people think being sick isn't a good reason not to go to work.
*laughs and cries in American because these people are everywhere*
I mean... there is also the no mask at all crew. They aren't just ... um.. shall we say mistaken about the efficacy of their unsatisfactory mask? They are intentionally not wearing one u__u
And they vote.
It's so fun because lockdown should never have ended but because the government is run by incompetent individuals and the crazies who think being asked to give a shit about other people is tyranny...
In Canada too

Good on you!
Me too 💕
Same. I have asthma, yet still wear a mask as long as I can.

A friend of mine has a mask that is the poster from the original Jaws
I want that.
I have a Jurassic Park one but I need to add a pocket for the filter!
I misread Jaws as Jews and was very confused.
Love it! ❤️
Fern H Tell them thank you for their efforts and that I hope they gain a lot from their work, for how much they’re helping others!
Good idea. Also the silicone 'cage' things you put underneath are a gamechanger as then the fabric is not touching your mouth/nose
See, I don’t like the Nic Cage mask, but also I do like it and would most definitely still wear it

this is known as a "nose dick" to me!
The nose of all noses. 👃
oh my god I'll never be able to unsee this now
Normally I avoid saying this kind of thing, but in this case it may be true for some people.
I always think if you're not breathing through your nose, why does it make a difference to have your nose out!
I still sneeze into my elbow with a mask on too. Glad to hear that in not alone!
When we sneezed into our elbows it still sprayed droplets everywhere in the days before masks. Handkerchiefs and tissues are still useful.
Have you tried the face shields? They might be easier for you to deal with?
As an american, those gathering regulations sound HEAVENLY! If only we were doing so well...
Tbh we’re not, our government would just rather let all the disabled and elderly people die and risk wiping out the entire country than continue paying people who aren’t able to work in a lockdown even though their still having to do so. I don’t see it being too long before we have another lockdown :/

Make sure you're reporting mesh masks on Etsy, because it IS against the terms of service.
Don't people wear them over other masks? Like the crochet ones over the ugly blue ones.
Thanks, I was wondering about that.
@@violetholiday nope theyre called "anti-mask masks"
A MASK WEARING GUIDE FOR ASPIES
EDIT: I didn't mention this but almost all of my masks are handmade either by family friends or myself.
If you like variety get a bunch of different colors and fits or get a bunch of the same whatever works
-N95's and other similar masks that aren't as flush to the face may be more comfortable as well as more effective!
Autistic person here,
I tried all of these (except for the last one since I don’t wear makeup), they didn’t work for me, so now I don’t go out even nearly as much. If you’ve tried everything and still can’t wear a mask, the absolute least you can do is only go out when you need to, or pay more attention to social distancing.
My main way of mitigating sensory stress is having a mask that has the elastic around my head instead of pulling on my ears.
Re the tightness on your nose/face in general, there are shaped masks with a pleat in the top and a separate panel under the chin and I've found them so comfortable I even forgot I had it on for a moment 😅
But then that could just as well have been extreme brain fog 😅
(Obviously hidden conditions exist but I mean people who are very obviously wearing them incorrectly or who you know for certain have no reason to not wear one)
I work in a small supermarket, but because of disputes between our union and the government we are not allowed to confront people on masks.
Yes! As a shop worker I really wish more people did this. We're not allowed to speak up to protect ourselves 😭
I see so many customers wearing a mask, but not over their nose. I wish I could say something, but we’re not allowed.

Have you tried the clear face shield?
Rachel Recycles I haven’t but maybe I should ? I actually invested in a silk mask which I find much easier to wear, it’s feels less heavy and is a life saver for my skin!
@@Ellen95 I run a call center and you really can't wear masks on the phone, so we provide the face shields instead and the callers seem to like them.
I have friends with asthma, and unless the mask was extremely hard to breathe in, or they were exercising, they would be fine.
I think the second-most important effect of the mask is just showing other people that, yeah, I care enough to do my part.
2020 started off with wild fires in Australia with a smoke ploom large enough to be seen in New Zealand and that was the high point so 1 star from me to.
chris bairstow I believe the smoke plume was visible when it got to Perth. In New Zealand it was thick enough to cause air quality issues.

We did it!
Was very glad to see lovely Jessica pop up in my notifications :)
Also, the nose hanging out thing drives me crazy too! It makes me more mad than when someone isn't wearing a mask. Also, while the mask is fine for my sensory issues, the glasses fog from the mask very much is not. But it's not so uncomfortable that I'm willing to kill or die for it so
I'm watching the numbers and despairing.
Get a mask with a nose wire so you can bend it to your nose shape. That’s what fixed the fogging issue with my glasses while wearing a mask!
My partner got us anti fogging spray (from the eyeglasses section of CVS in the US) and it really helped! Not completely solved but definitely better.
I love my mask too.
I'm oversensitive to smells & wearing a mask keeps me from smelling the people around me.
yeah I'm actually a big fan. I get to hide my weird expressions and acne and if i haven't been maintaining my facial hair ... I hope it stays socially acceptable
Same. Its so.. snug. I secretly love wearing one :)
Ever since, the Victorian anti-maskers have just bitterly stayed inside posting angrily on social media 🙃
Anyways our cases are still higher than I'd like them to be (but I guess considering other countries' numbers, 7 new cases in my state today is pretty okay) but my 5km area is at least doing pretty good lmaoo
Australia sounds lovely right now.
I've seen so many of the mesh "anti-mask masks" everytime i go to the grocery store. I have a heart condition
As a person who's immunocompromised, I strongly relate to Jessica's cabin fever.
Have you tried going out to places that aren't really crowded e.g. quiet beaches? Just to have a change of scenery from time to time
My mask triggers me to have a panic attack, I still wear it (over my mouth and nose). Honestly I just order stuff online most of the time.
@@johndododoe1411 yep
The amount of people I’ve seen wearing a tulle mask is, disheartening to say the least
Tulle is super cheap, you could make a ton in different colours and wear over an actual mask. Put in a lingerie bag when you wash them (at 60°C obv.)
a lot of those could be really pretty fashion accessories OVER actually masks.
Begin out 3 times in a full mask in 6 months because of disability and the high risk to my health plus my family.
Love you TH-cam channel Jessica.
My carers keep doing the ‘off the nose’ thing...grinding my gears

The hubby went and sanitized it for a second time
I do dance for 7 1/2 hours a week with a mask on and I am still alive👍
@ Only 19 minutes mask breathing possible: My 88 year old, asthmatic mother is able to do so for any length of time...A tip: According to an Instagram post I *saw, Breathing through the mouth can give a feeling of short breath. This is caused by the proximity of the mask surface to the mouth. Breathing through the nose doesn't. * When I tried to go back to check the sources, I couldn't find it anymore. But in my own experience at least it works! I was breathing through the mouth and found the switch to the nose a very noticeable improvement.
I have asthma, wearing a mask actually helps me as cold air and strong smells like smoke, perfume, plastic and so on can trigger attacks.

I have a doctor who mask that says "hello sweetie" with Rivers swak on it. ^_^
genuine question what does mental health have to do with wearing a mask
@@xuxionhao3418 some peeps (whether its anxiety, ASD, ADHD or a variety of other conditions) may find wearing a mask traumatic for one or more of the following reasons:
-they are an assault survivor and covering their mouth is triggering
-covering their mouth may over stimulate them and leave them unable to cope
-they may have an irrational fear of covering the face that causes panic attacks when they try and wear one
Those are just a couple I can think of but I'm sure theres plenty of other reasons! Tbh the only time I judge someone is when they are wearing a face mask incorrectly ie under their nose/chin.
Just underwent a double discectomy and spinal decompression surgery, and your videos are helping me through! Thank you very much

I love how Jessica brings up her not dead wife, dose not show living wife saying high...
I saw someone cut a hole in a surgical mask to basically only have the outline of a mask...sigh
Note that a good way to check the rough level of protection of your mask(especially if you are trying to make it diy) is to hold up the individual layers to the sun and see how much light can pass through it/how much you can see through it. Good ones normally are opaque enough to not see anything though it and just a little bit of light.

me, a service worker (also chronically ill) who works 5 hour shifts in a mask: 🙄
It’s not worth it
Helena Prout thank you hun, that means a lot x

‘Sneezing in a mask’
Having a tissue can be really useful for wiping down the inside of a mask if you get it wet and then ideally clean your hands or have sanitiser on hand. Although it would also depend on how water resistant the mask is, I use the N95 equivalent for my country so it’s pretty durable against sneezing, I can’t remember how durable surgical masks were.
Also mask extenders and masks with headbands are _amazing_
