The Hellcat engine has changed the game in the automotive industry. Forcing others to react and kick off another horsepower battle of the ages - the impact of this platform was unavoidable. So when Dodge one day had the bright idea to put the Challenger Hellcat engine in the Dodge Charger - I was all in. Four doors, tons of room, usable, and loud. Sign me up.

I had a chance to buy a used 2013 gt500 back in early 2014 for a very good deal. It only had 3200 miles and I could have had it for 42k out the door. I sold cars at that dealership and was nearly tempted into trading in the 2011 mustang gt I had just bought for 22k. I wouldn't have lost much, if any, on the trade-in, but the nearly doubled payment was a bit much for me at the time.
I drive a 500hp (420rwhp) tuned 2019 3.5 ecoboost f150 now. It will make around 650rwhp on e85 once I upgrade the intercooler, downpipes and fuel pumps. It's already as fast as my mustang gt was. It will eventually be about as fast in a straight line as that gt500 was, but still capable of going offroad, towing over 10,000lbs and seating 5 adults comfortably.

Widebody was the biggest scam ever. As a hellcat Challenger owner i can say that. Red-eye, demon or otherwise it was never necessary. You can fit the same exact size wheels and tires on a regular body and they don't stick out. Never did, never was necessary to add shitty bolt on bubble fender flares. But if sucker's want to pay $6K extra for stock bolt on parts then that's on them. Dodge also lied about the horsepower ratings. The hellcat motor makes 760hp at the crank. So when they released the redeye and claimed 780hp they barely had to tune it to get that extra 20hp or barely touch the boost and still never risk destroying the motor or increasing warranty claims. A redeye can't outrun a stock hellcat but hey, you get a cute badge with red-eyes for $15K more right?
You can make a Demon killing hellcat with just $5K in tune, pulley swap and oh yeah, putting the same street nittos on it that the demon comes with, vs the shit stock summer all weather's.
The hellcat truly is a blast to drive and stupid fast. Being faster than 99.9% of cars on the road is exciting. But at the end of the day, dodge has figured out the recipe of extracting money from sucker's for fake "features" like redeye and widebody or ac intercooler pumps. Super stock is just a demon with a different name and the only one worth buying if you want to waste gobs of money.

    • @whiteman2812
      @whiteman2812 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You are full of it. The Hellcat motor does not make 760 at the crank, that can be verified by literally hundreds of dyno tests on TH-cam alone. Secondly, you are in a tiny minority thinking that the widebody is not better looking than the standard body. Thirdly, you absolutely can NOT run as large of a tire as the widebody without it sticking out and looking stupid. The Widebody can fit a 315 width tire with the factory backspacing specs and still be under the fender flares, and it can fit a 325 as well with custom backspacing. You might be able to squeeze the factory 305 size tire that comes on the WB under a standard car without sticking outside the body but you are going to have to have a custom made wheel with custom backspacing, change or modify the end links on the sway bar in the back, and also modify the wheel wheels in both the front and back or it will rub. Any other way either sticks out and/or requires you to mount too wide of a tire on too narrow of a wheel. Finally the "intercooler pumps" you talked about, better known as the Interchiller is NOT a gimmick and if you think so you obviously are not a drag racer. A lot of people pay a lot of money to have similar systems installed on their street cars. The Interchiller can almost instantly lower your IATS when drag racing, this prevents the motor from pulling timing which significantly reduces power. The Interchiller absolutely makes a difference in performance and only someone that doesn't understand how it works would say otherwise. This is coming from the owner of '18 Hellcat Challenger, and a '19 HCREWB Challenger that is heavily modified with just under 1000 wheel horsepower.

I drive a challenger to me the idea of a muscle car is not just about the engine it’s also about the way the car looks I think the challenger stayed with the idea of the muscle car and the charger was made to look more like a sedan.
The charger also doesn’t come in a manual transmission, the Challenger does which again goes back to the days of old and stays with that old school field when muscle cars were just starting to come out.
A charger to me just looks like every other sedan just with a gnarly motor in it, where is challengers they have a personality there’s something about them that catches the eye of not only car people but people who are novice in cars. I don’t see the charger invoking the same emotional response that the challengers do.
I’m not ragging on the charger because they are an amazing car, but they’re just that a car with the engine of a muscle car where is the challenger is a muscle car through and through.

In Australia where I am from....we have been crying out for affordable v8s since the collapse of our auto industry a decade or more ago. Ford and Holden both shut down. It left a huge gap in the market here. Mustangs became the norm for v8 but it's really the only choice unless you want to import. Which I have done as you can see by my profile pic. Rhd converted too. My brother had a challenger and I also owned a trackhawk. Australia is crying out for some cars to fill that void and dodge have been teasing it for years. Not enough sales here you see not worth their time. My brothers challenger was off the road for 6 months about 3 months into ownership. Again dodge refused to back their warranty here in Australia and did everything in their power to avoid taking the cost of the repair.
My only issue with satanltis (jeep, dodge, Chrysler). Is their customer service and post purchase help is also none existent. My trackhawk was an absolute lemon. Constantly in the shop, constantly in for warranty work, 36 times in a year of ownership. All different issues but the major one was an engine failure at 9000kms due to bad lifters. And they still have this issue with those engines.
The way jeep dealt with an obvious lemon of a car was disgraceful. They eventually refused to fix the car and I had to find a mechanic who would on my own dime 16 grand later and I sold it. I was just done with them. I love the look of the charger and have always wanted one but unfortunately my experience with jeep killed that for me. I swore off that company this day.
My biggest gripe is im not the only one a guy down the road from me has a grey trackhawk and it is now modded within ab inch of its life not because he wanted crazy power but it was cheaper to mod it with better parts then go to jeep service for them. His supercharged bolts backed out and blew the engine. They tried to dodge the new engine claim for months and then finally agreed. Used all the tricks in the book to put it back on my friend. Again he threw his hands up and said jsut replace the motor I'll do the rest and they did. Soon as he took it too his trusted mechanic they informed him that a heap of parts were installed incorrectly and a heap of bolt holes on the block have been stripped out.
I dunno how they are in America but they have the worst reputation here in Australia. They just give 0 support to you after the sale. The trackhawk FB pages were all just filled with similar stories of people buying their dream car and then it being a disappointment and riddled with issues. The way I saw it was it was really hit and miss with quality control. One hawk would be flawless no issues but the next off the lot would be a nightmare. And it seemed to be about 1 in every 3 hawks sold was a lemon or at least riddled with quality issues with the finish, the wheels, interior pieces warping and falling off, misfires constantly etc ...so be careful with dodge their quality control is really shit.
So the car itself I love.....the company selling it not so much.

@@JXC98 I wouldn't say unreliable but hit and miss for sure. I know people with Hellcats and had no issue, Hawks too. But I've heard a heap of horror stories as well.
I just had a similar situation with GM here in auz as well. Bought a new Silverado about 6 months ago and the engine blew at 7k KMs. It was also rusted on the chassis rails and rear section of the car. Again it took months of me hassling them and eventually getting lawyers invloved and they bought it back. Sold it within a month and didn't repair any of the rust correctly just sprayed over the top. That car will be junk in 10 years. The amount of rust it had I couldn't understand how a new car could rust like it did. My opinion is they left it at the port in the US during covid without any rust proofing or shipping wax on it. So it sat in the salt air at the port for a year or more.
They didn't wanna admit that the car was unroadworthy and I wouldn't be able to sell it on. Here in Australia you need a road worthy cert to sell a second hand car and it wouldn't have passed I had a road worthy mechanic look over it and he failed it due to the rust and informed me I'd never be able to sell it the way it is. And this was a brand new 21 Silverado.
They still sold it to some poor dude who's Gunna be in the same position I was.
Car dealers promise the world and then don't deliver in my experience. Lately anyways. I've bought 6 cars in 4 years. 3 of those cars being lemons, all brand new.
For decades I never had issues with any of my cars but the last 6 years I've had a bit of a bad run with new cars being lemons.

    • @UltraMagnis
      @UltraMagnis ปีที่แล้ว

@@neverstopushing3638 you must have got one of the good ones then. Almost all the jeep trackhawk owners here have had some issue. Some big like mine and some smaller like interior parts falling off or warping. As you said orange peel in the paint, my hawk had this pretty bad too.
The quality control is just woefully bad. One after another my wheels flaked off the paint and this is very common issue.
The lifter issue is what was causing major problems back in 18 and maybe they have fixed it.
But that is the issue you see one car like yours could be flawless and a great ownership experience. Then the guy who was in line behind you will have a nightmare and a shitfight with the company for months and months getting this fixed and repaired. They won't do lemon law buy back in Australia unless you have had the same issue 4 times....in a row I might add. Lemon law here is a joke and they take full advantage of it. So with my car 36 faults in a year didn't constitute a lemon in the Australian definition because they are all different issues every time. Didn't matter the car was falling apart they were all separate issues so no way to get lemon law or it's very difficult. So you end up not trusting the car and I ended up selling it after I repaired what I could.
It's just was an awful experience. I almost bought a TRX before my current car but that gut feeling of what if it happens again kicked in and I didn't end up buying it. I went a BMW Alpina b3. Which for the few months I've owned it has been flawless. So I'm hoping that continues.

Let's be real. The interior of the Dodges is... okay. However, nobody is buying these cars for the interior. They are buying them for the fun factor, for all the reasons you listed. I believe this is why moving to EV's and discontinuing this platform is the worst thing Dodge can do and will likely put a significant dent in the company's bottom line. The fact that this platform almost single-handedly brought Dodge back from oblivion, and it is still the top seller in it's class even though it hasn't really changed in 10 years speaks volumes. For some reason (although we all know why), Dodge has decided to cancel it's largest cash cow.
As a Charger Hellcat owner myself, I can say that it is as much fun as described. I absolutely love the fact that I can take it to run errands, take my kids places, or just tool around town. All the while, with just a slight adjustment of throttle, it transforms into an absolute beast. If you really want to have some fun, turn the traction control all the way off. "Track Mode" actually still has some applied. Do that and you can cut loose at highway speeds.

    History, Mopar history!
it's cool that so many people are into the modern Mopars but mopar history would answer lots of your questions. Blacked out hood, starting with the 1969 1/2 roadrunner and Super bee six pack cars, to reduce glare when racing.
Mopar didn't just decide to stuff a big engine into one of their cars, Mopar has always stuffed as much horsepower into their cars as possible and offered it to the public. The Daytona's and Super Birds are the most popular example of offering race cars to the public. But before them was the "B029" Barracudas, from the factory with 426 Hemi, fiberglass front clip, no back seats, no ac heater or radio, no sound deadening or seam sealer, I also believe the windows where plexiglass with no window regulators.
History will also explain where Hellaphant came from and will show that Mopar had to help Ford from the very beginning up into the 60s.

One of the more fun experiences was test driving the 2018 dodge Daytona 392 charger. The absolute worst was a 2015 hellcat Challenger 6 speed. I will never forget being in first gear going 35 mph at like 2-2.5k RPM. I'd love that particular Charger, with the Challenger stickshift kinda like you did with the Magnum, I think the Charger's a better-looking, sleepier car than the Challenger (only because they're the same size, smaller is always better). Limo tint on the glass and mirror-polished black chrome wheels and exhaust tips, mmmm...
Yeah, the Caddy's a better car. With a better motor, but it's not a muscle car. This is, and I fucks with it. I have a hilarious Magnuson supercharged 5.3L Colorado, and it's a handful, but this is something on a different plane.

Reasonably priced isn't what I'd call it as of today. Most cars are extremely expensive right now with Civic type R's running almost $50,000 at some dealers. It's a $30,000 ish car if that imo. I remember when you could buy a Ford Focus brand new for $9,000. Sure that was a long time ago and inflation is a bitch, but you got what you paid for. Now it's not that way at all. Nobody makes a sports car for the people. A car with rwd 6 speed a radio and roll up windows, that's it, and it's all anyone actually needs. Ok AC and a heater, but infotainment centers and paddle shifters and launch control ect, are things Nobody needs and they're in everything now and it Jack's up prices like crazy. Reasonably priced? My ass!

I should've included Focus and Fiesta STs, but I think they quit building them here in the States. They were absolutely the best fun-per-dollar ratio around, and it's astonishing to me that they quit, but I guess they just weren't what people here wanted. My Fiesta ST was far and away the most fun, best-driving FWD I've ever driven, and I've driven them all. I also bought mine used and needing a transmission, so I got it cheap. I'd never dream of paying even half new car prices, I get clean, low-mile older stuff or newer stuff that needs something I can reasonably fix.
