V8E9: Palms, Peaks, Picacho California

  • Traveling north from Yuma, into southern California's rugged backcountry. The week commences with a relaxing stay at that beautiful Picacho State Park. I try out my new boat for the first time on the Colorado River, followed by a foot-based exploration of a nearby canyon. The wind picks up and I retreat to Joshua Tree National Park, where I visit the Lost Palms Oasis. Following a long desert trek, I enjoy a spaghetti dinner, and conclude the week in Yucca Valley.

This is the only over land/ 4wd trip that I always watch in full. No silly background music, just pure nature sounds. I really fell inlove with venture 4wd. Thank you for bringing Nature here in TH-cam.

Be in the lookout for a giant Mylar Valentine ‘fox’ balloon that escaped from our house! 🤣 I’m from Canada, but I’m sure it’ll find you!

Hidden Valley Campground in Joshua Tree is the best campground there IMO. There are all these amazing huge boulders everywhere that you can climb. You can actually have a lot of privacy if you pick the right campsite. And it's first come, first serve. But you have to get there early because it is super popular. If you go there when there's a new moon, it's one of the most mind blowing experiences. Stunning.

When you were at the BLM land outside of Picacho, you were close to a really nice trail called the Bradshaw Trail, it goes from the Colorado River to the Salton Sea,. Then from that point you can head north towards Coachella to Indio Hills and take Berdo Canyon-a back 4×4 trail into Joshua tree. It is a beautiful run...

@@jerryw62 ty watching the other vloggers of various themes you get a small appreciation for the sheer effort involved for those short segues. Ed Pratt with his unicycling journeys informed me (gradually) how that was captured.
& How much it informs the visual narrative & flow of the filming. Doing it well is such an understated skill but, you learn the sublimity of well shot bit of "tiny" camera art. & Thank all those craftsmen creating it day by day. 👏👏👏❣

I bought an inflatable kayak for my wife last year, it packs into a backpack and weighs about 25 pounds. It has a rudder that helps it track a little better... but it still is not that great. It works just fine for her on the small lakes and ponds at the various State Parks around where we live. I love my little Old Town Guide 119 canoe... weighs 48 pounds and is a beast. I use it on my solo week+ long canoe trips into the BWCA. I'm planning on bringing my canoe along on my overland trips this year.

Awesome work! The Bedouin tribes do not wear shorts and a t shirt for a very good reason. Also you might find that all the people stated lighter coloured clothing are incorrect. Lighter colors do in fact reflect heat but it also reflects your own body heat back into your body. Also wearing long pants protects from snakes and scorpions a little bit. When I am in a hot climate I am in long pants and long sleeved shirts. It protects from direct sunlight.

This was truly enjoyable, Chris! Picacho is one beautiful area...camped there when I was stationed in southern CA. I did the same thing re my kayak and bought a Sea Eagle 330 which tracks well and weighs 23 lbs including storage bag, foot pump, one pro seat, breakdown paddles, PFD and a helmet. There are numerous beautiful camp sites along the Colorado River from Yuma up to Parker. Beyond there towards Lake Havasu City, although beautiful, gets rather crowded. I wish that I had been more of a hiker back then...seems like I missed out on some incredible scenery. Fishing was great however. I'm excited to follow you through 2020 and I sincerely hope you and Jennifer reunite this year. She's amazing and you seem to "double" your enjoyment when she and Monty are around.

@@harveyhagar no. For a long time he didn't even had comments set up on the channel. He definitely reads them but I dont think he replies as its difficult with no signal.

Great to see that you have come over to the other side (from “hard” kayak to the “soft”: the ingenious, ultra-light, compact packing, inflatable packraft)! From what I remeber from this video, you only used a mouthpiece to inflate the raft. Disadvantage: dizziness and condensation (from your lungs) into the raft. Kokopelli has an inflation bag, which (I find, for my packraft) is a better alternative. 🤠👍 Zig-zag slalom on a lake is quite doable and all right for a packraft, I guess, but try the packraft on a river - what I prefer - packrafts are stable and very capable in streams, just enjoy! Cheers, and good luck with your newfound armada! 🛶

He has the inflammation bag and only inflated by mouth to top it off.😎

Eugene Enslow All right, no worries, then. 😄 Just thought time consumption was greater than what I am used to. My raft is even smaller, though - thus, less volume to fill, I’m guessing. Cheers! 👍

Chris, isn't there an attachment to your air compressor to inflate the boat?

I think it was out of courtesy to fellow campers since it’s a little loud to operate.

That's a good point Jeff, but I was thinking the same thing. (Don't you have an air compressor )???

I thought the point was that it's completely portable and doesn't require external accessories.

Yeah, pack it up the trail. I get that. But when next to your jeep which has a compressor an attachment would make it a quicker inflate.

Yeah, all those other campers right next to him....
