  • Highlights of a Barnet Sunday League Division Four match between Mill Hill Club De Futbol Seconds and Edmonton Rovers.
Played on Sunday 29th September 2024 at the Camdenians Sports & Social Club in Mill Hill.
This is Edmonton Rovers current group of young players 4th season in adults football in the Barnet Sunday League with the whole squad now being 19-year-olds who will be turning 20 during the course of the season. There are also five other players who are a year younger, but all players are now 18 or over. The decision to bring them in as 16-year-olds in 2021 has been a big success so far and you can follow their journey up the divisions with us here with every match being filmed for this You Tube channel. Rovers came into this match top of the table without conceding a goal and with three wins in a row behind them in all competitions. However their squad will be really tested for this match as seven players who starred in last week's impressive 6-3 Cup win against North West Wolves have all gone away 'up North' for the weekend, and with last season's top goalscorer Myreon Keane missing for the second match in a row as well, that leaves Rovers with only two substitutes, one of whom won't arrive until half-way through the match due to his phone battery going dead and the other being a new signing who hasn't played at the same level as his team-mates yet. Rovers do have a strong starting eleven though with Sam Pritchett, Christian Ellis, Rashawn Bennett-Dyer, Jordan Amusan and recent signing Marco Costi all available, but it means Player-Manager Josh Wakeford has to change the formation from a 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2 in order to accomodate an overload of attacking players that includes Max Melandri & Bennett-Dyer both having to play as central midfielders and Harry Dorward & Christian Ellis playing as wing-backs.
Mill Hill Club De Futbol Seconds have lost their last two matches, but last week's narrow 2-1 Cup defeat was a good performance against a top team in Division One as they were fielding a side that is nowhere near as strong as the one they are putting out for this game. That's because their First Team in the Premier Division do not have a fixture this weekend, so they are able to play a large number of them for their Seconds in this game as the League's player eligibility rules do not come into force until three First Team League matches have been played this season. That means Mill Hill CDF have a much stronger substitutes bench full of Premier Division-quality to bring on if Rovers go into the lead, but it is something Rovers have done themselves when running a Reserve Team in the past, so they are not complaining and are treating this match as a good test for their under-strength side. A 3-0 win for Rovers in this fixture last season when both teams were in Division Five will also give them confidence, even though they are up against a very different Mill Hill CDF Seconds side who only have three players remaining from the squad of 16 they used in that match.

Immaculate first half but really did run out of legs second half against what looked pretty much like a Premier team.
Their number 8 and 32 played most games for their 1sts last season so without a very strong bench that was always going to be a tough ask.
Couple of midfielders were a bit lacking in energy out of possession second half and so Rovers just couldn’t keep the ball.
Based on the first half, that would have been a certain win against their 2nds. Onwards and upwards Rovers

Yes, 10 of Mill Hill CDF Seconds squad of 15 for this match were First Team (Premier Division) regulars either this season or last, including the three subs who came on at Half-Time to either score or create all five of their goals. We were never really going to compete with that strength-in-depth with so many players missing.
The lesson our players need to learn from this game is that when you are defending a lead against a better team and are under the cosh, the WHOLE TEAM needs to get back behind the ball and defend. Some of our forwards and attacking midfielders didn't do that because it's not their normal game.

Beaten by pretty much a premiership side. No shame there.

2-0 up and coasting, some very lazy midfielders after that, no pressing or running back
