      I’ve never heard of him before, but he’s really funny and witty. It’s interesting cuz he and Johnny Carson are very similar and I’m wondering if Posten ever had a talk show

      @@dejpsyd0421 I don't think Tom Poston ever had a talk show. He was an actor. He gained fame on the Steve Allen show in the 50s. He appeared in Broadway shows and some movies--but most of his work was in television. I guess he is best known for playing George on the show Newhart. He was also other shows like Mork and Mindy and Grace Under Fire. He did tons of guest spots as well.. BTW, Carson is a panelist on TTTT in the early 60s for about 8 months. He leaves to start his Tonight Show.

      @@lla788 yeah... I've seen Carson on TTTT and WML they're both my fav oldies.
      I was just thinking that Posten had the wit to become a Johnny Carson. Interesting how life's cards fall where they fall and where they don't

    I am a long-time coin collector. In Game 2 I eliminated Contestant #2 because she said the nickel was composed of 25% nickel and 75% silver. (The correct answer is 25% nickel and 75% copper.) The only time the nickel five-cent piece had silver was during WW2 when they were 35% silver, 56% copper and 9% manganese. [There used to be a silver five-cent piece - the Half Dime - but it was discontinued in 1873.]

    Well I knew the lady from the mint since I saw her appearance on Whats My Line? several months ago and I remembered her. So I was in on the fun of her screwing up saying her name maybe on purpose and it was fun to know how bad the panel fudged up before anyone stood up besides that smart female fox Betty White.

      The contestant probably saw the episode with Mickey Spillane and tried to do something similar but on purpose.

    • @HeWentThattaway
      @HeWentThattaway 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The comparison is using troy pounds for gold and avoirdupois pounds for feathers, so this comparison has always been deceptive. A troy pound of feathers would weigh the same as a troy pound of gold. the same would hold true using the avoirdupois system for each.
      "In the Troy system only 12 ounces equal a pound. So a pound of feathers weighs 453.59 grams approximately and a pound of gold weighs 373.24 approximately."

      In addition to the other two replies to your question, Poston appeared in many stage performances in summer stock, mostly in New England, but NYC as well. Of course he is also known as one of the "man on the street" interviews Steve Allen conducted weekly on his show.

      Incidentally, it's been claimed that TP appeared on more sitcoms than any other performer. That of course is quite apart from his breakthrough work as one of Steve Allen's resident company, as already noted.

      Among other things, Tom Poston appeared in at least 11 Broadway plays. One of these was Golden Fleecing. He and Suzanne Pleshette were the leads in that production. (there is a TH-cam video of Pleshette discussing this) The play was the basis for the 1961 movie, The Honeymoon Machine. Steve Mc Queen and Brigid Bazlen played the parts originated by Poston and Pleshette.
