I think that's not correct. Square waves are just not good for inductive loads (eg motors). However, with brush AC motor (universal motor) it still works well with square wave.
I think square wave inverter to supply smps is safe, because it just alternating dc and smps will rectify again to dc but high voltage. But, it can harm PFC circuit(from I heard other people).

With the fake SG3525, try replacing the capacitor at pin 8 with a 50k resistor
