@@davel5845 Like most Sherlock Holmes-ian deductions, it's only as good as the writers make it. Having the hero's supposedly airtight logic be riddled with gaping plot holes is exactly as old as the trope of having airtight logic in the first place. That said, you're right so McCall is saved.
(In fairness, McCall isn't trying to win a prosecution. His suspicions are aroused, he calls the guy out, and the guy admits who he is. We assume McCall is as certain as he acts, and he almost certainly was, but it _could_ have been a clever bluff.)

Washington does a great job with the little things in his performance. The facial expression and voice are the masterpieces, of course, but the little nuances of stance and position, too. The director did a fantastic job of turning a straight-up canned revenge action movie premise and turning it into a chess match. McCall isn't about flashy moves, he's all business. Every move shows him as quick, calm, calculating, and disciplined. All the expressions of passion are very muted, but just enough comes through that you know what's motivating him and that underneath it all, he is feeling.
