    To be fair, you can upgrade the ram very very easily and ram is very cheap to buy. As long as you've got a decent processor, then you're fine. Then upgrade to 16gbs once you've purchased the laptop :)

      True but My used 2018 £150 i5 HP probook has 8gig ram and still cant run Ableton 11 or several plugin sythersizors hardly at all but it runs Reason 12 perfectly which is great however not being able to use Ableton for tasks it does well and not being able to use the Native instruments and Arturia plugins is a massive problem.

      Many inexpensive/used laptops are not upgradeable regarding RAM. It is something a person should confirm first, prior to purchase. I have two older laptops that I purchased without checking and I had to live with them as is (ASUS i7 and an ASUS i5). RAM on these older laptops is not guaranteed to be inexpensive either. This would be due to less stock available.

    Very good premise for anyone that is intimidated by how expensive it is to start up a home studio. But to further expand on your setup you left out the monitor stands, as well as the XLR to TRS cables required to connect the monitors to the interface and the cable from the mic or instrument into the interface. Also it would be smart to buy a power conditioner for this setup. You’d need a total of 3 to 4 inputs depending if the interface requires an input. I would argue the power conditioner might be the most annoying but important investment so you don’t run the risk of frying your gear through an janky old power strip. This comment can come off pretentious but i do think it is worth mentioning.

    • @pedrosilvamusician

I already have a pumped laptop with a I7 and a Gig memory (all SSD). Have a separate 32 inch 4K monitor. Have a new Oxygen Pro Mini as well (bought Ableton 11 outright). So, I have a thousand to buy the rest. Getting a Behringer WASP analog synth for sure and the Focusrite Scarlett 212 audio interface. The rest is still being researched.... Its fun...

    Nice video man! .. Relax that reverb in the future, way too much :-) ... Also for those talking about not getting studio monitors in an untreated room ... myth. As a 20 year audio engineer that worked in actual studios from back in the day and now have my own studio working with artists around the U.S ... get your mix right to begin with, it will sound exactly the same in vehicles. Monitors gives true sound and you need to have them. Don't just rely on headphones. We don't listen to music in our headphones in the car. Cars are untreated too. Get a good set of monitors, FIX YOUR MIX and everything will fall to place on your mastering. Untreated rooms are just social media regurgitations and marketing fluff to get you to buy all their stuff. Put carpet down, blanket the opposite wall the speakers face. It's a start to a cleaner sound. 8" monitors(you can build these WAY less too) and get a 10-12" woofer. Woofer goes center just off the wall under your desk or opposite wall in the center. It's a start and you can build up from there.

    • @michaelmennies1685
      @michaelmennies1685 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. You can absolutely do great mixing on good headphones. I recently watched an interview with Andrew Scheps talking about how much he mixes on headphones. And the fact is that today most people are listening on headphones or crappy speakers. Granted, it is very different listening with discreet left and right channels as it is with headphones, but once again, that is how most of the world is listening to pop music now.

    • @REVerbtalk
      @REVerbtalk ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelmennies1685 Headphones is always part of mixing but not for full time headphones. You're speaking what he already knows. You're disagreement is way out of context and that's all you're dead set on because you only saw "don't (skipped 'just') rely on headphones" and skipped the part where he said he's been in the industry 20 years. All you focused on was the word headphones and your only rebuttal was about some video you saw and regurgitating about people listening on headphones You forgot we had headphones long before the new millennia. But you need to understand mixing on speakers is equal too because pop music(and all other genres) plays in cars, clubs, tv, movies too. That's why he he said don't JUST rely on them. He didn't say don't use them. He also never once said anything about how lesser mixing is on headphones and you created your own problem by saying "I disagree, you can do great mixing". WHere he say the lesser about them? Your argument to his comment is literally null.

    • @michaelmennies1685
      @michaelmennies1685 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@REVerbtalk Actually, I am a professional musician, voice director, engineer and mixer and I do the majority of my mixing today on headphones. I have been working in music, tv and film production for 40 years now. Of course working on good monitors works and so does working on really good headphones. In the end, what I am trying to say is if am helping someone build an inexpensive first setup for the least amount of money, I would not recommend they spend any money on monitors - better to spend it on better headphones and a better microphone in my opinion. The fact is, when you are recording your own voice, you can't listen to your settings while you are tracking through the monitors, only playback. The biggest downside to headphones is ear fatigue. Of course I check my mixes on small speakers and in the car and adjust when I hear things are way off, but basically I think once you learn what sounds good in whatever set-up you use that still sounds good in the outside world, that becomes your reference point. On top of that the mastering plug-ins today, like Ozone, are so good at helping keep things under control, it is arguably a lot easier to get a decent mix.

    • @REVerbtalk
      @REVerbtalk ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelmennies1685 Just because you been doing all of that for 40 years does not 1up facts you tried to shut him down on. You saying all of that extra does not justify anything and I got a feeling your focus is personal, there was no need to buck your chest up with "40 years". His sole 20 years is 100% focused on mixing and engineering. I know people in the industry 5 years and can do extremely great mixes purely off of cheap speakers. You want to do it right the first time, you do it right! Therefore, you get monitors. If you're gonna call yourself a "producer", then get what what producers have and you MUST have monitors. Can't call yourself a contractor and not own a framing nailer. Also stop trying to sound smart over the obvious, we ALL know you can't be on a mic with speakers bro I'm surely not going to fall into that convo trap... Once again you're trying to make him sound like he said not use it when he never said it. Yes I know what ear fatigue is because I wasn't born a week ago but your 40 years is the greater so I wouldn't know right?. So I went to his page, heard his music, subscribed because I like his music that plays very well in my car and my laptop. Where's one of your songs you've mixed? Love to hear this 40 years of experience you posses. Save your 1up's, put your dick back in your pants and zip it up, stop measuring contesting him and link me to a song you've done so I can listen to what your songs sounds like.

      Are you from UK? Gear can be more expensive but not always, Novation for example has a UK bass and there gear cost the same in the UK as USA.

    I recently bought an M Audio Oxygen Pro 61, PreSonus audio face, Presonus headphones, JBL monitors,
    mic, mic stand , mic with screen all for $175. I also recently picked up an HP Elitebook 840 G3 16 gig ram, 512 SSD, 500 Gig Hard Drive for $170 off of Ebay. It's not bad for a small budget. I'm proud !!!!

    I just switched from pc to Mac, and Macs just work better. I never realized how awesome my midi keyboards were until the nobs worked correctly. I never luck out on used gear. this is a great video topic. The PreSonus ultimate bundle new is a great value if you're trying to cross the t's and dot the i's. for the lowest price of entry new. its 299 it comes with a mic headphones monitors interface cables and a daw. It's good for the money, but you could probably get a little bit better quality if you got the "best budget" items that are highly rated.

      Sometimes you can get a laptop with upgradable RAM. So when you have additional funds you can upgrade the RAM. Until then you have something to start with.

    I believe this video to be accurate. You can get a totally professional home studio with $1500. I'd say $2500 to make it much better such as getting an apollo solo interface, with a shure sm7b mic. The acoustic panels and bass traps you can easily make.
    With places like Zzounds you can get anything you want next day at your door on a payment plan, no interest, no credit check. Its the only way I could afford my gear. 🍻

    Curious what people's experiences have been buying used gear? I've been told that some items that are more sensitive like monitors, headphones, some synths and instruments, are very risky bc you don't know how the previous owner treated them (unless you know the previous owner and can confirm they were treated well). Then there are some more sturdy items like audio interfaces that are a safer bet buying used.

    Well done great video. I think you’re going to inspire many people. One Question, the DAW you used Cubase trail version. Can you save, live record, add instruments plugins or do you have to buy the full version?? Thanks again for making this film ❤

    Fun video. I would always recommend starting folks on good headphones only. And possibly spending more money on just a USB mic, eliminating the need for an interface. And obviously it makes it impossible to come in on this kind of budget, but the Mac Airs now have no fans, eliminating a big recording problem, fan noise in the microphone.

    Overall it's true, used gear is the way to control your budget. However, for the laptop you chose in this example, the description indicates "not working for parts only". A decent used laptop may more likely be twice that price.
