This man is one of the most positive I've ever seen, he just makes me hopeful and listening to him is just kind of enchanting, he's really a great speaker
I have been lucky enough to meet him, and he is charming, kind, smart and funny. He isn't afraid to speak out or make fun of himself, which I find refreshing. But then, that's why I adore the Irish!
Hi Bono, we first met at Kitty O'Sheas back in 1993. I was recording an album at the then ''new'' Windmill lane under the ame Daniel Weaver. Ever since then, I've been following your growth as true presence of good in our world. Recently, you said that you struggled with humility. ''I can fake it very well'' were your words. Yes, you may have worked and reworked your talk but it is clear to me that when a man has accomplished as much as you have, and this while constantly asking for HIS will to be done, there is no need for humility because there is simply no need for ego. In this talk, you have proved that brother. Thank you for all your work. Keep on being present. You are his example of the instrument we can all be. Much love to Ally and the kids and of course the boys. All my heart, Daniel (Weaver) Taddeo.
I'm sick of the hateful comments on this video. Bono's message is strong and true. He's not a saint in the least - he made that very clear in the talk - but he has experience as an activist, he's done his research, and he's invested his heart and soul into this. He's taking action - and that's what matters. I'm sure the world's poorest don't care who's standing up for them, as long as someone is.
This is one of the finest talks of Bono. Showing the solid data, his persuasive argument emerges from the inspiring groundwork that he is doing in Africa to eliminate the poverty. And the result is showing. It's good news. Yes, the poverty is reducing across the globe. Thanks to Bono like Great Samaritans. Good, Inspiring and highly recommended.
Useful? Such as helping the needy by splashing out 30 million on a 140 feet long Cyan yacht, 15 million. on an apartment in the luxury building Sam Remo building in Manhattan, and goodness knows how much on Exe bord du Mer Mansion, his U2 360 Blue Line MD-83 F-GMLK Airbus, on his 1980 Mercedes 450 SEL, Maserati Quattroporte, Volkswagen Tiguan and Tesla Roadster. He is worth 700 million, give your head a shake.
his lifestyle is absolutely not the issue here. what matter does it make if he lives in a 40sqm apartment or in a 400sqm loft? or if the edge has a fucking 30meter motor yacht? yes it makes absolutely NO difference on the things they have accomplished
I love how everyone's only counter to this video is that he hasn't payed taxes. I'm sorry that some of you people believe that one bad deed melts away every last good deed this man has done. Yes, what he did was wrong. But are his values just not pure enough? Do you really think this man is lying? He was brought to the verge of tears in the end. You must truly believe in a cause for that kind of emotion. This man will go down in history for his good deeds whether you like it or not.
+Digital Knife Studios Bono's tax issues reveal his actual values, which are private-sector-oriented, neoliberal values. Give this a read: www.counterpunch.org/2013/03/19/factivism-and-other-fairytales-from-bono/
Bono is an immense one of talent, strength and courage. Many turn up their noses at him, but he continues to invest in kindness. Believes and seeks to make a better world. He does and we can do it too.
Bono's underlying message was for the citzens of the world to unite 'ONE"..... to fight political corruption and social injustice for a world free of hunger, deprivation and want. Inspiring words, once again.
WE hold the power. Even if you are born into a corrupt, police state you can still "Do Unto Others as You Would Have Them Do Unto You". The Golden Rule is a tenet of every major World religion and also holds a high place in secular humanism (atheism). The simple act of treating your fellow man the way you would wish to be treated could help heal almost every problem in the World. The "Tithe" (giving 10% of one's income to charity) would END hunger and provide clean water and basic medical aid to EVERY single human being on Earth! Be very judicious in who you hand your $ to and do your homework before giving. As you read this we have the power in OUR hands to make the World a great place to be. The "Power of One" is quite real. (btw; I'm not some "Pollyanna", but am an old Libertarian/Conservative and often quite cynical...) Peace to all.
In Australia some would view me as possibly not that wealthy. But nothing could be further form that from my perspective. 150 ago my lifestyle was = to that of truly wealthy people. I have access to hot water without hard labour. Truly pure water to drink whenever I want. When hungry, I can order food to be delivered to me if I choose. I have electronic cooling & heating & I can command entertainment by the wave of a hand. For all that, I am truly grateful & I work doing my greatest passion.
We are less divided than we use to be. 20 years ago we could not chat like this. I do not even know your real name & we haven't been introduced & hear we are having a great conversation. A journey starts with one step & we are taking little steps forward all the time. The future is beautiful & it's happing now :)
Yeah. I don’t mind him wanting good and equality and Justice for everyone in the world, except he doesn’t actually mean it. He only pretends to and only cares looking like he cares about those things and being a philanthropist so that nobody will judge when he behaves in the exact opposite way and just starts pushing religion onto everyone.
He done more to help this world than all of the one dissing him combined.Yes he makes millions of dollars off his royalities and his investments but he also give millions to the poor without fan fare ...hes a good man
Bravo Bono, I don't understand why people dislike his efforts and his words. There is nothing wrong with helping other countries even when your own situation (Ours in America) isn't perfect, because that's what it means to be human. Social darwinism is not the next step in our evolution as a human race, no pun intended.
why so much hate? this talk is about the part that make us human, it might not be around a new science inventions or plans but he is talking about something that is the most basic of all: empathy, because without it we couldn´t solve the poverty problem even if we easily could
My reasoning is that to fear the future, is like being afraid that the sun & moon will rise & set. It just dose nothing. When I do have concerns regarding the future, I research & address them 1 by 1 & only deal with things that I can prepare for, or become more aware of to potentially avoid. Often fear of things has more to do with our past.
i don't know. i'm guessing the people who disliked this didn't watch the whole thing and are just anti-Bono...which is fine, i guess, but if they saw the whole thing, they would have learned and then LIKED it. He made a good talk here. i certainly like this TEDtalk !
I dont know much has Bono and ONE organization really helped in Africa. Maybe he is a little hypocrite. But who isnt. It is so easy to criticize and pessimic but it is much, much harder to stand up do something good, or atleast try to do. Bono is a good man and speaks from his heart. It is not important who stands up for whats right, its important that somebody does. Love and peace.
you have to experience separation before you can truly achieve unity... and to understand that having one automatically signifies the existence of the other. we're at the part where more and more people are understanding love, through experiencing the pain of being without. it's the conscious choice to return back to unity that we're seeing throughout humanity by the day. they're both there, it just depends on what you choose to see
Hi klinickaslika, It's interesting that you say that these countries are kept poor by design; there relies the idea that there's someone (or a few ones) that chooses keeping them from growing. You are talking of the power of an individual or of a small group. What Bono proposes is doing the same, being individuals standing up for equality, for philantropy. A single person is the first step for a massive change and why wouldn't you be that person?
One thing you'll learn after reading TH-cam comments for a while is that there are a large number of people who just want to hate on someone. Who it is popular to hate on will change from time to time. The worst anyone can say about Bono is that he didn't pay his taxes for at least one year. In my opinion he's done FAR more charitable work to more than make up for not giving a government his money to misuse.
I agree and doing what is right is challenging the entire system, not just 'fighting poverty' which could have been eradicated if it was in fact in the UN's and the corporation's best interest to do so, it isn't. He's a spokesperson for the elite to pacify anyone that would instead question the fact that no nation has proposed a definitive plan to end poverty. We do have a solution, but will undermine the position of any philanthropist as well.
And there are very good reasons why we don't use anecdotal evidence. But if you really want it: I live in South Africa, one of the third world nations mentioned, and over the last ten years there has been a marked increase in employment, longevity, health, and general infrastructure throughout the country. Things aren't perfect, far from it, but things are getting better. Not just in my country, but globally.
That's a valid point, though it would never be possible for everyone to be an expert on every Ted talk topic or presenter. Coming from a naive point of view about Bono as a man, I still don't see anything wrong with this one particular talk in itself. I was just surprised by the way people criticize the man and not the talk. But hey, maybe if I knew him better I would think different.
Maybe..but his wealth and fame has given him a lot of power and at least he is using that power to try and bring positive change and awareness. I dont think we can eradicate the imbalance of wealth by simply making stroppy comments. We just need to hope more of the "1%" become as aware and empathetic to the poverty situation as bono seems to be
hate is the emotion of the hour. Stop hating anyone...ever. MLK gave his life for this. Even if we do not agree with all he aligns himself with, his HEART is not filled with hate. He wants to see poverty extinguished and that makes him a "brother in arms". Thank you Bono!!! Keep shining bro!!! Keep the vision!!!!
Dude, I am in my mid-20's working a paper-pushing job in a country that has a self-described globalized, free-market economy: the Philippines. I make a decent living for someone my age and have tried going into business as well. I know for a fact that the laws here in my country do not prevent anyone who can to set up a business, but there is no protection from the bullying that happens to small businesses by bigger ones, most of which aren't even from this country at all!
Yes, flight & fight is vital for human survival. To to have flight & fight towards something that is not definite to happen is another thing. To have a specific concern of a future trend & prepare is intelligent. As far as indifference, a lack of empathy has more to do with indifference than a lack of fear form my line of thinking.
I am all for Bono and his work against world African debt. No one else is doing the job and making the difference for the better, If Bono really wanted to be a typical indulged rock star, living on scandals, sex, drugs and booze, he would have chosen that life style 20 years ago, with his claimed success from the U2 band career. Bono and the band members always keep a professional image on and off the stage and have much respect for each other. So give this great man a break from criticism.
I feel like people in Western countries get criticized no matter what they do. If they dont help / intervene, they are called out for that. If they do, they are called out for interfering, or wrongly "judging" what was needed by the marginalized. If they follow a "prime directive" policy of non-interference, they are called selfish, but when they do try to help they are called for either getting too involved, or not helping enough!
actually the real problem is not the lack of food but the maldistribution of it. If you watch others videos of TED or any ONG they show us that we have food to everyone, but there are some problems that we have to face, and the the worst is the CORRUPTION, the central theme of Bono's video. So if a little critcism and justice we cant get it. I know it's almost a utopia, but we need to start somehow
I agree with your middle paragraph, while I also think I can nail my own irritation with Bono down to a simple point. Presentation. He comes across as self righteous and in this speech I questioned his intelligence in places due to what he chose to say. People who are being rallied to an altruistic cause don't like to be condescended to or called to action by someone who appears to be doing it to inflate an already over sized ego. That being said, his cause and actions are indeed good.
because heres a speech by a man on poverty, a billionaire, whos not content on making 100s of million from music but who feels the need to invest his money in property, start up companies, shares and stocks to make more money and most importantly heres a man who preaches to governments around the world to aid third world nations yet he does his best to avoid paying taxes, an irishman whos holding company is registered in holland. so i ask why is there only 416 dislikes
My point was that government is a really poor answer if you want to help people. Their actions usually end up doing the opposite of their intent despite being well intended.
I really don't like him as a guy who does charity, but going to El Salvador in the middle of the civil war is something courageous no matter what haters are gonna say
And still he shares a big part of his income to help poor people. Yes he's just one rich man. But he gives more than many other people altogether. I bet he does more than you and me.
There is no need to start to be nasty and rude. People can have different point of views but is important to respect each other and be open to dialogue. No need to insult.
I'm a middle aged, divorced Security Guard who lives in an apartment and drives an old Pickup, yet I Tithe (remember the "Tithe"?). Not to a Church, but to well researched charities and organizations. If all of us in the "1st World" were to Tithe to appropriate charities poverty would virtually end tommorow. Not a hand out, but a hand up! Old Cliche' that still holds true. What have YOU done lately?
I don't hate Bieber either and I say all the more power to him. But one thing is for sure: you can't call him an artist as most of his career is determined carried out by a variety of other people. Thus, he's a brand. Anyways, Bono never broke the law. If you have an issue with it, take it up with the government. It's their job to cover up loopholes, not our responsibility to avoid them. And you say the country is better off without people like Bono. Well that's exactly what he's done! ...
We do need physical and materialistic supplies to the poor in order to eliminate the poverty. I do agree. However, the poor will always exist, unless we show them how to overcome poverty. I'm talking about the fact the materialistic poverty is caused by the spiritual poverty. We don't need to depend on others to attain independence, both spiritual and material. We need to teach and learn from one another how to fish a fish. Being given a fish will soon face a thick wall. Unless one is totally financially independent, he/she is not spiritually independent. Education and training help, and are the only two means to attain the total independence. Even in the developed nations such as Europe and the USA, there are tons of people who are in the material and spiritual poverty. That is the fact and we have to take care of all by caring and sharing for others. We have to be others-centered. Our wealth is made at the cost of others poverty. That is the reality no one in the rich class talks about. The rich can do a lot more; live on the 10% of their income and donate the 90% for good causes, if they want to benefit more and gain peace of mind for their greed.
theres that saying...give a man a fish, he eats for a day...etc... its not about GIVING the marginalised money and thinking 'sweet, problem solved', it's about sustainability, assisting the low socio economic areas of the world ways to sustain a livelihood where there is food, clean water, education (if thats what they need) but it is NOT about what WE think they need, its about finding out what they need! Its about listening and connecting and NOT judging
I wish all people in "power positions" could use some of it for good, it would influence so many people to do the same. Think of how many famous people act selfishly for only personal gain. *My definition of power is the ability to influence large sums of people with minimal effort.
I agree with transparency of government and where the public's money it truly going. I also agree that natural resources belong to everyone. I will say that those who discover or extract do deserve just pay for their efforts but not all the money coming "out of the ground." We also need to realize that corruption isn't just on a government level. There are so many people out there using aid meant to help start a life as as way a way of life. When that corruption is dealt with, then it works
Gr8 work sir...by God's grace, you will live to see that zero mark goal become a reality. Pls, help us do more to hold the second and third tiers of govt. in Nigeria and indeed the whole of Africa and the rest of the developing world accountable.
Here is a fact that I noticed reading through some of the comments: Some people are watching this video subjectively rather than objectively. If you don't like Bono that's fine. If you do not like the wealthy that too is fine, but don't judge the video on the presenter rather judge the video on what presenter is speaking about. Don't question this video because because the guy is rock star -- being subjective -- instead question the video because of the data he is stating -- being objective --
the solution to poverty is not to give the poor money. that is unsustainable and would only bring them out of poverty for a short period of time. What we really need is to devise a plan that enables the poor to be self-sustaining, whether through education campaigns or governmental reforms. that is what will help the poor the most.
i didnt say anything about moving money. yes, rich ppl often donate lots of money, the unfortunate truth is that this almost never solves any problems. it nearly never has more than a temporary effect. the way to lift ppl from poverty is the free market. Bono said it himself, the largest obstacle to poverty is corruption. less state intervention will lead to less poverty.
Isn't it great how he says that computers will be serving you drinks in 2030. Just imagine that, how many people will be out of work. It really does show we need a different change and The Venus Project is a great change for poverty. We as a people can make this change and win this war on poverty. It just means we will be removing the rich as well. Living as equal beings.
I'm surprised at how many people are basing their opinion of this video on their raw emotional reaction to the person presenting it. He's rich, he wants to talk about helping people less fortunate than him, but isn't giving all of his money away. Get over it. The message is a good one: people can, and have made a significant change in world poverty, but if we slack off now we will never achieve our goal of eliminating poverty. So enough with the vitriol already, it's embarrassing.
It's so easy for everyone to criticize Bono, but what have YOU done? Seriously. Is he saying he is perfect. Is he saying his ONE campaign is the saviour of the world? Complain all you want, but his actions, connections, and influence are responsible for saving millions of lives, and for getting many people in the world to consider things that wouldn't otherwise be considered.
Bono = Genius. I have respected Bono more for his intelligence than the music. I love how the rarest of artistic minds sees something greater than just (in his case) music and fame.
I'm in Togo, West Africa today, as an American I have traveled to 6 the countries listed "Sub-Sahara." As a perpetual World Traveler of 15 years, and 90 countries I am indeed tired of listening NGO-ONG wanting receive the applause for this, or the global fund.(Bono) Yet the REAL REASON is the cell phone. Prior to the cell phone, the impoverished stayed in high risk areas. THE DESERT Cell Phone allowed contact friends, family, and to move to employment. The solution is redistribution, not money.
This man will go down in history as a double-legend. Once for music, once for Humanitarianism.
"The power of the people is so much stronger than the people in power." Well said.
In my opinion I disagree with this quote. If it was true the world would be a much better place
'It always seems impossible until it's done.' - Nelson Mandela. Be contagious.
This didn't age well
South African here. LOL, is all I can say.
When was the last time you checked in on how things are going in SA?
This man is one of the most positive I've ever seen, he just makes me hopeful and listening to him is just kind of enchanting, he's really a great speaker

I approve of Bono being entirely aware of his public perception . . . and still moving forward. Kudos, sir.
Yes Bono, "the power of the people is so much stronger than the people in power."
Great words Bono!
One of the best TED talks yet. I love Bono. I might be using this speech for a paper.
I love how at 9:36 he says: "you can tell the polititians..." and he nonchalantly sticks his middle finger out!! hahahhaahh!!!!!! YES!!
I'm sick of the hateful comments on this video. Bono's message is strong and true. Sick of the cynics in the Internet bitching about bono.... why they dont do something useful?

MacabreHeritage oh right, because millionaires can't help anyone , right? but instead let's keep bitching on the ones who does.

The man is a humanitarian

We do have a solution, but will undermine the position of any philanthropist as well.
wow he is a great speaker
We just need to hope more of the "1%" become as aware and empathetic to the poverty situation as bono seems to be
I'm a massive U2...outwith the music ... he's done so much good .
This man know his stuff and he knows how to get his point across. A good speech!
"because the power of the people is much stronger than the people in power" that is amazing
The natural order of our planet owes us a way to provide for ourselves
and continue our species
Hats off! Bono, I know you don't care but when this happens (2028) we will remember you like Madiba!
Love is bigger than ANYTHING in it's way!
This man is THE MAN !
hate is the emotion of the hour.
Indeed. A very sad truth, but one that we ought to try to change.
why are people hating on Bono so much? He has campaigned to help over people, how can you hate on that?
Absolutely phenomenal!
actually the real problem is not the lack of food but the maldistribution of it.
That being said, his cause and actions are indeed good.
because heres a speech by a man on poverty, a billionaire, whos not content on making 100s of million from music but who feels the need to invest his money in property, start up companies, shares and stocks to make more money and most importantly heres a man who preaches to governments around the world to aid third world nations yet he does his best to avoid paying taxes, an irishman whos holding company is registered in holland. so i ask why is there only 416 dislikes
thanx bono and co who have the heart and brains to do gr8 wrk and bring people like me up to speed!
Very powerful message... cheers Bono
Quite the contrary, it's the greatest force for moving money from the poor and the middle class to the rich.
theres that saying...give a man a fish, he eats for a day...etc... its not about GIVING the marginalised money and thinking 'sweet, problem solved', it's about sustainability, assisting the low socio economic areas of the world ways to sustain a livelihood where there is food, clean water, education (if thats what they need) but it is NOT about what WE think they need, its about finding out what they need! Its about listening and connecting and NOT judging
Great conversation & you both make amazing points but in the end, every time someone wins, someone else loses.
I wish all people in "power positions" could use some of it for good, it would influence so many people to do the same. Think of how many famous people act selfishly for only personal gain.
*My definition of power is the ability to influence large sums of people with minimal effort.
240p? Was this recorded on a ten year old phone?
Good talk though.
And that's why we're talking about trends, percentages, etc. and not absolutes.
OMG, I am so happy about this movement. God has blessed Bono and he is passing the blessing onto everyone that he can.
its called spreading knowledge
Gr8 work sir...by God's grace, you will live to see that zero mark goal become a reality. Pls, help us do more to hold the second and third tiers of govt. in Nigeria and indeed the whole of Africa and the rest of the developing world accountable.
They were living on less than $1.25 per day, but now they're living on less than $2.50 per day. DOUBLED! DOUBLED!
Here is a fact that I noticed reading through some of the comments: Some people are watching this video subjectively rather than objectively. If you don't like Bono that's fine. If you do not like the wealthy that too is fine, but don't judge the video on the presenter rather judge the video on what presenter is speaking about. Don't question this video because because the guy is rock star -- being subjective -- instead question the video because of the data he is stating -- being objective --
The irony of this statement is exquisite.
the solution to poverty is not to give the poor money. that is unsustainable and would only bring them out of poverty for a short period of time. What we really need is to devise a plan that enables the poor to be self-sustaining, whether through education campaigns or governmental reforms. that is what will help the poor the most.
He will always be a number 2.
i didnt say anything about moving money.
yes, rich ppl often donate lots of money, the unfortunate truth is that this almost never solves any problems. it nearly never has more than a temporary effect.
the way to lift ppl from poverty is the free market.
Yes, Bono. Together we stand for that dream!
Nice speech, good to see that things are actually going towards the better for a change.
It is very easy to criticize and be pessimistic. It is very, very hard to stand up and do what is right.
He is an amazing person why do you hate him ?
Talking about poverty seems such a great pleasure to him!
...because he knows that people take him at his word and it makes him look good
I'm surprised at how many people are basing their opinion of this video on their raw emotional reaction to the person presenting it.
The gap between rich and poor is widening, in a few years the poverty level will be shocking
Good message!
Great conclusion about the worst illness of all!
