She is a hero. She had no one to protect her. Her mother left her with a predator and known rapist to be used and abused. Then her mother, instead of working to support her little girl, put her daughter out to work to support her. With all the things that happened, Evelyn rose above the horrible, insane people around her who used her beauty to benefit themselves, and didn't lose herself. She definitely was a hero.

I really like Evelyn's voice here - very full and brassy! I recently read a (fairly new) book on Evelyn's life which was very well researched - and a great read to boot! It's called, "The Girl in the Velvet Swing" by Simon Baatz, for those who might be interested. The author did a great job of conveying day-to-day life, in "upper class society," of New York City, in the early 1900's. Evelyn was like Dorothy Gale - having been dropped into a world (which she didn't quite understand) and life's events quickly overtook her. In the end, she did prevail with a great drive and belief in her own self-sufficiency.

People age and it is normal, even for such beauty icon Evelyn Nesbit; her life was never easy after those trials and struggling to survive in later years. Brave woman as many as from that period who had to live in a culture and society brainwashing girls to accept the ideal life controlled by men. She was just a 14 years old girl already being introduced to abusive men, coming from a hard life with her mother and brother. I just have the feeling of disgust and revolt at, first, that old man (probably as many pedophile of the period who saw her as a potential toy) taking this naive girl "under his protection" without any other intention than sexual purposes. And after that she had to bear all the psychological abuse from a sociopath for long time. A spiral of events happening very quick through her transition from a young girl into a young woman...and older; it just makes me believe she never had the opportunity and support to recover from those deep traumatic experiences.

it seems those girls should thank those men for supporting them and their children, regardless of whose children they were, for their entire lives. But women are so self-serving that they do not look at it that way, only how could they have gotten more. typical female and they never change. the muslims have to right take on it. keep the female in her place or she will stab u in your back.

Awesome time capsule. At the start I love how the guy at the table leaps to his feet when his date returns to the table. As for the one and only Evelyn Nesbit, we should all age so gracefully. In her prime you had to get in line to photograph her. That was one lucky line.

Considering her age at the time, she was still quite a lovely woman. She would have been 51-52 years old here. She did not have a strong voice , but it's obvious she had considerable presence.

I disagree with the description.. this isn't exactly tawdry nor is it demeaning as some people think
. The lyrics are about being a survivor and finding humour in the situation as you crawl out of the pit of hell. Determination and exultation after surviving the long ordeal. I knew she was spunky and determined to keep her head up when I read what she said about lawyers. Survivor story and inspiring how one can keep on keeping on and maintaining optimism despite being put in such an unfair position from the get go by ones own mother and a situation doomed to end tragically

It was Evelyn Nesbit who discovered Baby Rose Marie- the child singer who grew up to star on the Dick Van Dyke Show. She lived quite a life- constantly re-inventing herself; from dancer, motion picture actress, speakeasy owner, singer- and sculptress. At times in this video- she looks cross- eyed and she can't sing worth squat- but she was definitely a survivor!

I would love to see someone make a decent movie out of her story - or even a good documentary would be nice. It's quite a story. And yes I think she was extraordinarily beautiful and a fabulous model. No wonder everyone wanted to photograph her at that time.
Some people tell me I look good for my age but at the same time, I pretty much photograph as a hag most of the time. So I think she looks pretty good here. It's just a shame about her hair but 1930's hairstyles weren't particularly flattering to older women and from what I understand about her, I doubt she cared that much anyway. At least we have a lot more options today.
She was a survivor, that's for sure. And yes, Christopher, I ordered the book yesterday! :)

Evelyn with her ubiquitous boa. The first three takes were painful to listen to but the last one was alright. Some audience members dressed in 20's style dress so probably early 30's is right. The one thing Evelyn hated about show biz was having to repeat the same song, same fake smile, same enthusiasm, day after day. She in fact quit a number of gigs in the late 10s because of this, only to sign on with other clubs. She once owned a club called Café Evelyn. Evelyn never, ever wore undergarments

The math seems off ...If Evelyn's birthdate is correct, Christmas Day, 1884...that would make her in her forties here. I don't think it is her. Seems more like a 'spoof' or something...making fun of her more than autobiographical.
IF it is her, I find it actually kind of bittersweet/sad, given the real Evelyn went through hell in her lifetime and ended up with nothing but infamy and a scarlet letter. She was used by both men.

What a piece of history of most likely Americans living abroad in Panama in the 1930s. Other than the band, they all look like gringos. Some appear quite tall. Perhaps US Army personnel or civilian workers with the Panama Canal. Colon was on the Caribbean side near the entrance to the canal. The ladies' dress and hairdos remind one of the 'flapper' era of the '30s. What a great time they were having. USA ex-pats looking for a resemblance of the US life they were missing by living abroad. I lived in South America in the '60s as a teenager and understand that need and urge--trying to get access to the music and dance revolution our stateside counterparts were enjoying (Beatles, Beachboys, Motown, etc.)

Most historians think Evelyn's mother exaggerated her age by 2 years to avoid child labor laws, so in essence she was born in 1886 , started modeling in Pittsburgh at 12, became the world's first supermodel in New York at 14, became a showgirl/rape victim/magnet for unsolicited marriage proposals at 15. Even John Barrymore, her lover closest to her in age was technically a pedophile. That would also make her age here 44.

    This ends the five-year war,
I'm sweet Miss Nesbit once more!
I can come when I please, I can go when I please,
I can flit, fly and flutter like the birds in the trees,
Because I'm no man's mamma now!
    Hey, hey!
I can say what I like, I can do what I like,
    I'm a gal who is on a matrimonial strike;
Which means, I'm no man's mamma now!
I'm screamin', "There, I know how
A fella feels gettin' out of jail, "
    I've got twin beds,
But I take pleasure in announcin' one's for sale!
Am I makin' it plain? I will never again
Drag around another ball and chain!
    I'm through,
Because, I'm no man's mamma now!
I can smile, I can wink, I can go take a drink,
And I don't have to worry what my hubby will think!
Because, I'm no man's mamma now!
    Get it fixed!
I can spend if I choose, I can play and sing the blues,
There's nobody messing with my ones and my twos,
Because, I'm no man's mamma now!
You know that there was a time
I used to think that men were grand,
    But no more for mine,
I've gone and labeled my apartment
    "No Man's Land!"
I got rid of my cat, 'cause my cat's name was Pat,
Won't even have a mailbox in my flat!
Because, I'm no man's mamma now

Loves Meraphor-I agree with you that she is the heroine in all of this. The pitiful job Evelyn,s mother did in bringing her up. The waste of the talent and intellect of this girl cannot be forgiven. Those other poor excuses for men in her life-stanford White, Harry Thaw, John Barrymore also committed sins against Evelyn that are unforgivable.

It’s been five years after this video was posted. But I am currently working on a Creative project which will be a Chapbook inspired by Evelyn Nesbit. Of course I know the full story of 1906 Crime of the Century. I was sparked by a repeat episode of the Dead Files in 2016 when she investigated a house in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that is allegedly haunted by the Ghosts of Evelyn Nesbit and her Husband Harry K Thaw. It turns out my empathy radar was working better than I thought and I think it’s time for a Writer like me to add my voice and vision to the process.

What seems to be the truth is that: First of all, her mother was too trusting of Mr. White; second, she might have known herself that when a rich man who doesn't have to work for his money starts showering you with gifts and showing you all around Europe, some kind of trouble is just around the corner.
