    My hornby class 25 did exactly the same ages ago it slowed down and then started smoking then stopped. But mine was one built in 2003 and had a few years use.

      Yes it seems quite common unfortunately - though unexpected on a loco with regular services! :O

    Nice restoration! Quick build up of gunk on the commutator is commonly caused by the motor being stalled. This could be caused by running the engine too fast, pulling a load too heavy for the engine, a weak motor(weak magnet/coils), or too much resistance from the motor(not enough lubrication). Considering the engine is run with one of those pancake motors(generally unreliable, unfortunately), your best long term solution would be replacing the motor with a cd motor. Another possibility is the (presumably) graphite contacts that touch the commutator are (1) worn out, (2)not smooth, or the (3) spring is too stiff. Nice vid as always!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks very much Charles - yes it was strange how quickly this one seemed to dirty, given the good condition of the coils! If I have more trouble, I will have to fit the CD motor to this too!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    Sam, remember how I asked " How do you get cotton off of coupling rods?" I fixed it. You take a lighter and you burn it. Once it's burned. You take a razor and you cut it off. Then once its off, tap the nail back into the coupling rod hole. I have an idea. I'd like you to review the Lionel Polar Express HO Scale Berkshire. Thats what I had to fix yesterday with my O Scale Polar Express.

    "Find out how to take off the body, that'd be my tip." Gotta agree with that one. I had to return a loco a few days ago for that exact reason. It squeaked, and I couldn't put any oil on it. The body resisted all attempts to take it off. Figures it was held on with an excessive number of clips and no screws.

    Hi Sam. Missed this one - I'm back at work as 'we're a vital service to the manufacturing industry' apparently! I'm fairly certain I bought one of these when they very first came out in the late 70's.
    It was one of my favourites, as was the 'real one' - can never understand how they didn't survive and 20's did, 'though there are quite a few preserved ... just a nice size I reckon, and look pretty appealing - no ugly duckling Class 70 looks here!!
    I'm fairly certain I got it for about £7 NEW. Just looked up and the 1977 price was £9.50 so it is possible - used to encourage purchases by decreasing the list prices quite a lot in those days!!

    I HATE THOSE DIESELS!
    Sam was testing three of his stinky diesels on his railway, one on each track. Two were light engine, the third, Growler 37, had a light load of three Blood & Custard Coaches Mk. 1 style.
    Class 25, on the outside line, moved forwards an inch and blew its motor to bits. Crompton 26, on the inside line, managed to go as far as the turntable and exploded altogether. On the middle line, Growler 37 ran all the way to Gordon's Hill and cut out halfway up. He suffered a loud explosion of his own. Sam was frightened for a few minutes, the explosions making him jump half a mile. Watching with her pair of eagle-eyes, Kelly laughed out loud at his expense. Talk about a disaster waiting to happen.
    "See?" giggled Kelly. "Broome Manor is more reliable than those stinky diesels any day."
    "OK," sighed Sam inclined to give in, "I guess you've got a point. So much for getting my hopes up." The tracks cleared of diesels, Sam had Broome Manor haul the Blood & Custard Carriages. The Great Western Steamy proved she was more reliable than all of Sam's stinky diesels put together.
    Sam recovered from his little scare.
    "Anything else you'd like to say?" he asked his friend.
    "I HATE THOSE DIESELS!" Kelly mockingly yelled. Her hatred of diesels never failed to materialise.
    "Sorry I asked," he replied smiling. He couldn't scold Kelly for hating diesels so. You go, girl.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh dear Kelly - such hatred can't be healthy. Why can't you live and let live? A diesel could come to your rescue some day, then how would you feel?
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

  • @vijeolook

    Hi Sam. I have a question. If this problem happened on a modern 00 gauge loco with a new can (coreless) motor would you be able to do anything about it if
    the problem was with the motor? The old motors were maybe noisier, consumed a higher current and had a worse performance
    than the latest designs but they were built to service. Btw, I am a N gauge modeler, so speaking from N gauge experience.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No not really - modern motors are becoming increasingly difficult to service - I'm not sure about coreless motors though, I've never opened one up before!

    If the wire that just came away in your hand was a multi-strand wire, maybe it was the wire itself failing strand by strand, due to rough/incompetent handling at the factory, rather than the soldering of the joint. That could explain the uncertain running followed by a complete stop. I'm no electrician, let alone electronics engineer, but it might also explain the internal dirt, from arcing on the commutator due to massive fluctuations in voltage and current as the poor little wire worked itself to death.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may be right David, that's a good thought, would certainly explain the dirt!

    i wonder, all that filth... maybe the light service last time wasn't enough? that dirty section would have been deposited by the brushes. perhaps the particles form the brushes built up and started to short the sections together? maybe next time you should have more diagnostics first, such as taking meter readings before you clean.
    another notion, perhaps you over-oiled it last time? that could have allowed the brush particles to collect and gum up the works with the brush particles? especially if there were already excess brush particles still in the mechanism.
    after seeing you lube the gears, maybe it would be better, for that type of mechanism at least, to instead apply that grease in small dabs to the gears once its assembled and moving slowly. would let you put small amounts on and allow the mechanism itself to distribute it.
    hope you are having a great day Sam.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that could be true - though I always try to be thorough! Yes I did do that - I didn't spread the grease, I allowed the gears to distribute it themselves!

      @axelrajr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SamsTrains not to criticize too much, but i saw a several chunks of grease get flung around. :) but the brush residue is definitely gone this time around.
      i have to say though, its an interesting mechanism. it actually kinda reminds me in a way of that complex old trolley locomotive you did.
      you just need a second one of these in there. i wonder if you could replace the other truck with one? in the interest of science of course...

    Hi Sam you can get a pinion puller to remove the gear of the motor try slot car parts on ebay.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah you can, but the gear sits very close to the chassis, so the pinion pullers I already have are no good :(
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    Sam! Sorry that I only just realised that you have passed 70000 subscribers! And at the time of writing this comment your only about 1000 away from hitting 75000! Can’t wait till you hit it! And I sure that you are to! And when you hit 100000 subs I about %95 sure that you will get a 100000 subscriber TH-cam play button! And now that will be really cool! 😎🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃👍🏻
