      The viola really gets a lot to do here! The scherzo has it doing the melody a fair amount too

      Yes, the major instrument of Vaughan Williams was the viola. He took it up as a child and played it in orchestras.
      That’s why he wrote so well for strings.

    A complex and weirdly beautiful work. This is not a piece I would have thought had been written by RVW. But I wonder if it must be reflective of the war given it was written in 1944. Thank you.

      From just the first movement, it reminds me of some of the 'weirder' symphonies. No. 4, for example? At least on the surface.
