  • Explaining Confidentiality To Clients In Social Work
How to explain confidentiality to your client? This is a common question that many new Social Workers ask, because let's face it, confidentiality is a big deal in our profession and we never want to find ourselves operating outside the bounds of privacy.
Explaining Confidentiality To Clients in Social Work practice is one of the foundational Social Work skills that you will learn. This is a skill that you will need to use at the micro, mezzo and macro level of practice.
I have included the sample script that I use when explaining confidentiality to my clients and have also referenced an article below for further reading on this topic.
In an article by Socialworker.com it states, that as Social Workers we have a "Responsibility to Keep Client Information Confidential."
The article goes on to state that, "confidentiality means that information shared within a relationship will not be shared outside that relationship. The expectation is that what a client tells a social worker, the social worker will not reveal to others. The purpose of client confidentiality is to encourage clients to share information that may be embarrassing, or even self-incriminating. Through the sharing of such information, the social worker can help the client address an issue, concern, or problem the client may be experiencing. The social worker’s obligation to keep client information confidential is supported through state and federal law, but most often is discussed in reference to the NASW Code of Ethics."
