I grew up next to the Brighton main line so the only diesels I saw or heard were 33s and the daily 47s on the Brighton-Manchester cross country trains. Still love the sound of a duff working hard, just a shame I so rarely hear it these days Had the pleasure of a rail tour to Sheffield a few years ago behind Britannia 70013 "Oliver Cromwell", but I think I was more excited with the 47 haulage on the way back - brought back so many memories
I was at Immingham loco in the mid 70"s. We had many Type 4's based there. Lovely locomotives to drive (number two end was the quietest) 47370 & 47379 were the prototypes for what eventually became the HST. Caperble of working in multi. 2750hp x 2! Fantastic engines. Sadly missed.
I have to say, to me there is no better sound than a Class 47 with the taps open with a heavy load on! Its absolute music to my ears and I could sit here and listen to it all night! More of the same please!

They're used to transport sand between Middleton Towers and Monk Bretton, Barnby Dun and Goole. GB Railfreight (GBRf) have the contract for this, so they provide locomotives for such workings.
Very enjoyable 11:40 of Sulzer burble, starting on this kind of freights they sound the best. Were the BFYE, 2 tone green FYE and large logo machines all from the Riviera stable?
Love watching these thrash videos but can I ask when you have 2 trains back to back both pumping out power are the controls linked simultaneously to each other or are they separate locos with separate controls both manned ??
Thank you. Most of the time on the the national railway network they are controlled simultaneously with the use of cables running between the two locomotives. However, sometimes the latter method is used, more commonly on heritage railways where two locomotives may have issues connecting together.

Excellent video and compilation - I love the diesel Class 47 (backbone of the BR network in 70's and 80's) along with the 86's and the Intercity 125 - shame that they were re-engined.
The British Rail equivalent of the SD40-2 technically speaking is the class 59, it was built by EMD and near identical mechanically speaking. Only the class 59 had a different body shell design for BRs narrower loading gauge.
The BR blue large and small logo and BR two tone green are my favorite liveries also the intercity and rail freight liveries as well. Stick with the classic liveries and diesel loco designs there more better to look at going past through stations and countryside's plus they sound better. Modern diesels look good but they just don't sound right to me I like the class 37s growling sound and the class 20s chopper bike sound also the 47s sound great as well in this video.
I am a big fan of 47s, and think this is a good video. However, I would ask whoever films them, why can they not pan round and follow the engine as I don't really want to see carriages or trucks, just the engine. Thanks.

CM Headbanger most already are withdrawn. they've been going since 1962 and only a handful left

Thank you. 'Thrash' is a term often used to describe diesel locomotives when they are on full power, therefore making a lot of noise.

I thought the Class 37s and Class 47s got replaced by the newer Class 66s on freight services in the 1990s
When you see two locos together, towing nothing- why have both running? Surely one running and towing the other while off will save diesel?
Is it just me or do the Brush engines on 47s and have the same whine as the Paxman Valenta, VP185 and the 56 Paxman Engines.
