    At the price point, it would make sense to go aftermarket. You could do an Alpine Halo9 and do amps & speakers for what Toyota wants for the head unit.

    Aftermarket is the way to go. I've owned 3 tundras and each was blessed with aftermarket stereos with android auto. If you s are willing to invest just a little more, I recommend new door component speakers, an amplifier and a subwoofer. The features and sound will amaze you. All for about 1k if you are savvy enough to install yourself.

    Adding an aftermarket head unit like an Alpine or Pioneer in the $600 range is totally possible.
    You might have another $200-$300 in dash kit and wiring harness adapters to retain steering wheel controls.
    $1,000 all in with installation-
    Not bad for a head unit that’s light years ahead of a more expensive OE head unit.

    This is 100% feasible and 100% cost-effective to do. I purchased an Entune 3.0 radio with navigation for $200 from eBay. Then I purchased an auto harness house plug-and-play harness for just over $200. With a little over $400. I have a new head unit that fits in the dash perfectly. I don't have anything that is protruding out. And it's fully integrated. What you are neglecting to mention in this video is when you go to an aftermarket head unit. All the integration and extra modules that are required to make the truck communicate with the radio properly. And even still, you're going to easily spend a minimum of $600 on an aftermarket head unit to gain carplay and Android auto. Yes, I will agree, an aftermarket head unit will make the speaker sound better verse the OE but you can always fix that with a plug-and-play amplifier upgrade and speaker upgrades.

      I did the same for my 2018 tundra with a 2021 radio and conversion harness, for a bit more than you paid and so glad I did. I couldn’t find the Entune 3.0 app to download, did you have any issue? CarPlay and all previous features work fantastic.

    • @sgtfluffy7466
      @sgtfluffy7466 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marksnider3808 I'm not sure what you would need the Entune 3.0 app for? I bought the radio, just waiting on the harness to arrive hopefully Monday and then I will be installing. I've already upgraded all of my speakers So eventually I'll put an amplifier in and really upgrade the sound of the truck

    • @sgtfluffy7466

      @@marksnider3808 however, I will say that I know there is a software update that's available on certain versions. Since my 19 Tundra came with navigation. I made sure to buy a head unit that I was able to have the factory navigation as well. Even though I probably won't ever use it since I have Android auto. But I'm not going to downgrade the radio because of having Android auto and carplay

    • @marksnider3808
      @marksnider3808 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My original 2018 radio had navigation as well- and more importantly the antenna. I didn’t think I would want or need the Toyota navigation with the new radio and CarPlay. It all worked so well decided any way to retrofit the new radio with the outboard navigation unit- which was another easily obtained OEM part on eBay, and more importantly needed to retrofit with a new additional crossover harness add-on to support. I did already download and install the updated application code to the new radio. I’ll update again when I retrofit the new navigation unit- hopefully this weekend. Who did you get your crossover cable from? I got mine from C & H.

    • @marksnider3808
      @marksnider3808 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BTW…the old navigation unit was built-in to the old 2018 radio- Sirius XM was the old outboard unit. The new 2021 OEM radio has Sirius XM built-in, but the navigation is the outboard unit. Seems confusing but true.

    At $4k for the cheapest version with no option to return the unit if it doesn’t work, that’s a hard no. I’m perfectly happy with my 2014s head unit. iTunes works just fine via Bluetooth. So does Spotify.

    I'm keeping my stock head unit on my '18 DC, thank you very much. If you are merely looking for a bigger screen and the addition of Apple Carplay its not worth any amount of money. And if you're an audiophile like me, going to another stock hu even if newer doesn't make any sense as stock units have crappy audio signals and power output anyways. If you're after better audio sound quality, the aftermarket is the only way to go. I replaced all 8 speakers on mine with Focals, added a 10in JL audio sub, JL audio 700w amp, JL audio DSP for stock hu integration and finally a JL Twk signal processor to clean the signals. Also added sound deadening material on all the door speakers. Difference is night and day. Total cost is about $2500 (shout out to Safe and Sound for awesome installation!) No stock tundra system will sound as good as mine, 2020 or newer

    Hi Tundra Dude,Wes here again. About 2 weeks after I bought my 2014 Tundra that was one of the things that I wanted to mod was the radio. I do not like that entune and it is my first experience around a entune. The aftermarket radio I have my eye on is the Tesla Android radio. It has options of a 10" or a 12" screen, the price is about $600 to $800 for the unit. I've seen reviews and videos of people that put them in their Tundra and for the most part there hasn't been any bad issues. To be able to mirror my phone with the unit is worth it, then I can use Google Maps instead of the navigation on the Tundra.

    The stock unit in my 19 Tundra is trash. I have been patiently awaiting the release of the Pioneer AVIC-W8600NEX head unit. It just became available for sale this month. I will be having it installed in my 2019 Tundra TRD PRO within the next two weeks. The cost is $1,200 for the unit, $210 for wiring, and $235 for the install. I have had Pioneer AVIC units in the past in other vehicles and have been very pleased with them. I am confident that it is superior to the units Toyota offers in their 2020 vehicles.

    I just picked up a 2021 tundra, coming from a Dodge Challenger and honestly man this infotainment system is so embarrassingly bad. I love the truck despite of that though. On my challenger, navigation guidance interrupts AM/FM radio and XM. And you could also control the volume of guidance and music separately as if they were on 2 channels. With the tundra it just seems like the tech is really behind the curve.

Secondly, I think the account from James is from a business perspective. In other words it's extremely expensive to go through and manufacture harness adapters between the 2 sets of pin clips that it's not a possible business move but for 1 guy to buy a few clips on ebay and some colored wire. The cost is just for yourself and you have no intention to make money off the endeavor. It's possible. Nobody's done it yet. Just my 2 cents.

    I have a Kenwood Dnx996xr with the maestro link and it works + looks like factory installed. You get Wireless CarPlay which goes great with the wireless charger that I installed in the armrest. Only complaint is about a one minute boot time when starting the truck. How long does it take the head unit on the 2020 to start up? I would love to see that in a future video.

    I was able to purchase a 2020 head unit from ebay for about 1.2k. Do you know of any place that is wiling to install it into my 2019 Tundra?

      Look on eBay , someone came up with a pnp harness for the 2020 headunit retrofit on older models

    It's touchscreen and Bluetooth, I don't need much more than that personally, it's an off-roading truck for me

    Not a chance. Way to pricy. I’m content. Besides only listen to music off my IPhone.

    My unit keeps dropping calls. Is this something covered by warranty or am I beat?

    I’d first tell someone to upgrade to a Kenwood or Alpine that’s Apple Car Play supported. Another option is this: th-cam.com/video/RvN58WY-ceI/w-d-xo.html which is a a expensive item from Korea that allows Apple Car play on entune
