    You oiled the shuttle race, very good. Most people neglect this. There is actually an oil wick to keep the race oiled. There is a small hole under the front slide plate that should contain a wool felt wick. This leads to a very small weep hole into the race surface. These are almost always plugged with debris and dried oil which makes them impossible to see. A paper clip or stiff wire can be bent to make a probe to insert into the oil hole and push the blockage out from the inside. A new wick can be made from a small piece of scrap wool felt stuffed into the hole. When working as designed the oil seeps out onto the race and keeps the shuttle lubricated. I dicoverd this in an old singer service manual. I have not found any info on TH-cam or elsewhere, but it seems this should be brought to light

      I have heard this wick referred to, but am unable to determine where it should be. Does anyone have a picture? The first hole, close to the center, about 3/16” diameter?
      Many thanks to all.

    There is an oil point below the front slide plate that weeps oil onto the shuttle path. You may need to fully remove the plate to find it. It's full of an absorbent material that holds the oil. You might need to poke a needle into the shuttle side of the point to get any clog out. Good video. Nice machine.

      Thank you. This is just what I am looking for on another machine. A wick is stated in the manual too. For my machine It got no wick left and it got no hole through. So I am investigating. But I noticed, that this shuttle race needs oil, because otherwise the shuttle will rattle under higher loads.

    Thank you. I just inherited a 1926 model 127 that was abandoned in a garage for about 30 years. I'm excited to have her cleaned and working again. It's amazing how they can endure almost anything. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

    Thank you for this great informative video. I just had the pleasure of purchasing a Singer 27 and have been pouring over every bit of information I can find to get her back in tip-top condition as she has sat unused for a number of years.

    What's the difference between version 1 and 2 and 3, etc? I just adopted a 1915 127 Sphinx and I'd like to know how to identify which version she is when she arrives. Thank you for the helpful video!

    Hello Virgo. I just read manual oil instructions for 127 and 128 (made 1930) - I cite: "To oil the mechanism under the slide, draw the front slide toward you and after removing the lint and dust, which may have accumulated, put a few drops of oil on the wick, which is retained in the hold in the bed of the machine. Did you notice this wick? Do you have any idea what it may be oiling. The reason I ask is, that I got a vintage Köhler vibrating shuttle machine. I think it is quite capable. But I have not succeeded in getting a manual. So I try to figure out from other manuals what is normal to oil. I have tried a bit of heavy work on it, and I have noticed that the shuttle race needs oil rather often. Alternatively the shuttle will start to vibrate under load. So I wonder that a wick might be used for that on some machines. But I cannot find a wick on this Köhler. /Viggo

      I too thought it odd that he didn't oil the wick. That's specifically why it is there, to keep the shuttle gliding smoothly.

    • @sewingmachinesindetail
      @sewingmachinesindetail 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ritamurphy9426 Thank you. Yes, I later found out, that the machine have got a narrow hole from the small oil wick reservoir and to the surface of the shuttle track surface. This hole is there to get the oil out where it is needed. Unfortunately my Köhler machine got an error from manufacturer, so this narrow hole is missing, and therefore I got confused about it.

    Hi, I have a Singer 66. I am missing the metal plate that sits to the right of the machine that houses the openings for the leather belt to go through. Could you please tell me what this is called and where I could purchase it? Thank you so much!

    Does the motor get oiled? I have a 128 and it looks like it has two oil dropper holes one one either side of the motor(by the pulley and on opposite side) having a hard time finding this out

    • @tobyssewingmachinerepair8949
      @tobyssewingmachinerepair8949  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dan, great question. Some motors do have oiling holes, but these Singer bakelite motors that you're describing need a very specific type of grease. It's a low melting point grease that slowly melts and lubricates the motor shaft as you sew. The reason why oil can't be used is because oil is very thin and will quickly make it's way into other parts of the motor where oil should not be. The best motor grease is the original singer motor lubricant which comes in a green tube. The newly formulated 'Sew Retro' grease from the Featherweight shop is also suitable for these motors. Many people swear by using petroleum jelly because it melts at around 115 degrees, which is the same melting point as the original singer motor lubricant. I haven't tried petroleum jelly in a motor, but have researched it enough to say that it should be suitable. I used to use the new Singer brand grease which comes in a white & purple/pink/yellow tube. I then found out that the formula changed and the melting point of that grease is no longer suitable for those motors. Lastly, I would never recommend using something like lithium grease on any part of a sewing machine, the melting point is too high and it will eventually harden if left for too long. So in review, your three options are 1) Original singer motor lubricant 2) New 'Sew Retro' grease from the Featherweight shop 3) Petroleum Jelly. All three will work just fine. I know my answer was long but this is a confusing topic and I wanted to explain fully!

    Where can I find replacement pieces for this machine?

    • @tobyssewingmachinerepair8949
      @tobyssewingmachinerepair8949  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on which parts need to be replaced. If you are in America I would recommend www.vintagesingerparts.com/ they have almost everything, either original vintage or reproduction parts (original is always better). If you are in Canada like me, www.stitchintheditch.com/ has a good selection. I'm not knowledgable about sources for other countries. I might have some vintage original parts to sell depending on what needs to be replaced, you could email me at virgosewing@gmail.com if you'd like to go that route. Though if you're not in Canada, the first website might be in your best interest due to shipping costs.

    Another question should the foot pedal speed be progressive or is it just on /off?

    • @tobyssewingmachinerepair8949
      @tobyssewingmachinerepair8949  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should be progressive, you should be able to increase the speed as you depress the pedal. If your pedal only runs at one speed, your pedal might need adjustment or it's also possible that there are too many or too few carbon discs in your foot pedal.
