Military Push Ups to Failure

  • I do a lot of exercises to failure, but realized that I always stopped short of failure when doing push ups. There can be a suprisingly wide gap between when I think I'm going to fail and when I actually do. In this case, I would have normally stopped around 55 but instead completed 63 to failure. I think the last few were harder mentally than they were physically.
    On a side note: push ups are relatively new to me, and I had previously been doing a wide grip push up and was told that I should be keeping my elbows in closer to my body. This was A LOT harder for me. Is it supposed to be harder? In this video I'm trying to use a more standard form by keeping my elbows in. You are welcome to provide a constructive comment on my push up form, I am by no means an expert here!

      Doing 15 solid, proper-form push-ups is nothing to be ashamed about, that's more than the majority of the population can do. Note the proper form though. Go deep, go slow, stay straight, touch your chest to the ground the same moment your nose hits. Focus on doing it right, the hard path, not the number of reps you can do. 15 of those, very difficult already! Keep it up!

      If you can do 15 proper form push ups it is impressive. When you do them fast and easy you can easily get double as many or more.

      @muhammedmorad2573 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@osto1094 depending on what you’re trying to achieve here or whom you’re trying to test for. For example, military standards (Navy) you shall lower entire body until arms bend to at least 90 degrees then push entire body upward and return to starting position, ensuring arms are fully extended, without locking elbows. Now full range of motion push-ups, you will then come all the way down, your chest will touch the floor and push all the way up and lock your elbows. Doing so, you will notice significant decrease of the max pushups. Hopefully this could answer your question.

      I think its all about consistency in exercise and diet. My mindset is that I don't skip a workout or take a day off unless I'm nearing an injury or sick (which is almost never). If I'm tired, I just go easier the next day. Don't give yourself the option of sleeping in or skipping a workout, ever. Even if I'm up half the night, I still set my alarm for 5:15, I'll catch up on sleep the next day. Focus on eating lean protein. And avoid processed foods (especially pastries/desserts) and calorie-dense foods (peanut butter, nuts, cheese). Lost of fish, meat, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, vegetables, fruit, grains etc. I bet you know all of this already. You just have to commit!

    In our martials arts classes the instructor would get over 100 quality push ups. When fatigue started setting in another way to extend the reps is by changing the muscle group load percentages. So some open palm like that, some knuckles, and then some arms spread wider out. That would transfer loads on the muscles some and allow to go longer. Really impressive your count total.

    I haven't done military pushups to failure since basic training. I went down after 25 or so, and couldn't push back up, no matter how hard I tried. Suddenly a drill sergeant was bent down in my face, screaming and cursing at me to get back up. I told him I was trying, but couldn't come up again. He thought I was lying on the ground, and shoved his hand under my chest. But I wasn't lying on the ground. There was just enough space between my chest and the dirt to make a fist. My entire body was trembling with the effort, but I refused to quit. I was surprised when the drill sergeant stood up, and walked away, leaving me there, still trying to come back up one more time. It was then that I realized my most important lesson in the military. It wasn't expected that one could do it all. It was expected that one didn't give up. After that day, I never did. 👍👍👍😏😏😏

      Hi Kristina. I generally lift weights 4 mornings a week and run 3 mornings (unless I'm training for a big race, then it's the opposite). I also rock climb 2 evenings and often get in another lifting workout one evening a week (just for fun because I love it). I don't take days off, but switch muscle groups or do an easy day if I'm tired.
      I try to get 100g of protein a day (that's about 1g per pound of bodyweight). Im not aiming to build muscle or bulk, but it's very important for me to recover quickly because I enjoy all my workouts and don't want to be sore. I eat about 2,100 or 2,200 calories a day, if I eat more I'll gain weight, so I have to limit myself. I try to get 20g of protein at most snacks/meals (my staples are egg whites, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, fairlife milk, fish, and lean meat). I don't count carbs/fats, but they end up limited so that I'm not calorie-excessive.
      I have no idea if what I'm doing is ideal, I've never worked with a dietician or trainer. But it's worked well for me over the past year.
      Best of luck to you!

      @@kristinakohler4150
      Since I work out so early in the morning and I'm short on time before I have to leave for work, they are usually fasted. But I'm not saying that's ideal. If I'm attempting a fast pace run, I'll eat something sugary for a boost. Or if I'm doing a long run (12+ miles, I'll eat a high carb meal first to sustain me. When I was training very hard for the pull up world record, I had a protein shake during my workout, but now I don't train quite so hard and don't feel like I need it.
      For running, I generally an interval run once a week (5 min warm up, 15 minutes of high intensity intervals, 10 min cool down. I do a 5-6 mile run once a week. And I do a 15ish mile run on Saturday.
      I lift for about 40 minutes in the morning 4x a week. Usually half of that is shoulder and knees physical therapy-type exercises to protect myself from injury. Then I'll do some harder work on arms shoulders, chest, back, abs, legs. I don't follow a schedule. I exercise whatever doesn't feel sore from the previous workout! I avoid arm workouts before a rock climbing night. I avoid leg workout before a long run. I love to bench press, deadlift, curl, triceps kickbacks, weighted leg lifts, ab wheel, declined push ups, squat, lunge, weighted pull ups, really whatever I feel like working on that day.
      Hope that helps!
