In the 50's, my mother and aunts swore by Pancake makeup. Mom continued to wear only Pancake makeup until she passed away in 1978, even though it made her face look like it was covered in cracked mosaic. The first eyeshadow I was aware of came in around 1960. They looked like lipsticks and only came in bright blue and emerald green. They looked awful, but Mom and Aunties all wore them with pride, even though you could see them coming in a dark room at 50 feet! Now, at age 75, I am rediscovering makeup, and thanks to you two I've managed to avoid looking like Bette Davis in "What Ever Happened To Baby Jane". Frankly, I feel like a teenager again, playing with colors and techniques I'd never hear of before. Thank you for helping me rediscover my younger self, and showing me how to have fun doing it - even when I make a mess of my face!

My grandmother was dirt poor and she said they’d take flower petals and Vaseline muddled together to tint the petroleum jelly. They then put it in old washed tins that had potted meat in them and would use it as lip tint, blush, and eye color. Some of her stories from the 50s were wild.

We had a type of paper back then in the Philippines called 'papel de hapon' which the poorer ladies dip in water then dab on their lips and/or cheeks for color. It lasts a long time.

My grandma in Mexico used boiled beet as blush and liptint. She didn’t use a lot of makeup anyway but she used to say you should always have some color on your cheeks. Beets don’t last a long time but it definitely works. 10/10 Jackies

My great grandma is over 100, lives in Canterbury and has only ever used Pear soap to clean her face and swears by it. I’ve lived my whole life in the States and she use to mail it to me once I became a teenager because we couldn’t get it here back then. A few years ago I started using it again for soap brows and it works AMAZING for that. Pear soap is glycerin. Thanks to James I now understand why it might be great for certain skin types. Sending you both oodles of love from across the pond

It's a shame that Pears soap was reformulated. It's not the same now. My mum told me to use it as a teen and it was great for my skin! Tried it again last year and it was completely different. Incredibly stripping.

I was born in 1972, but my Grandma was born in 1914, and my Mum was born in 1943 (Dad was born in 1927). My Mum's side of the family grew up as what you might describe as 'working class poor'. Women of my Grandmother's age in the period, from what I was told, did mostly tend to stick to the skincare routines that they had learnt from their mothers or that were fashionable when they entered their teen years (so a lot of Edwardian, 1920s 1930s influences). For my Grandmother that originally was a very basic soap (soap as in a Castille type soap, which would also be used for laundry and body washing) and water routine, followed by a home made rose water toner & then either tallow or lard as a moisturiser. In the mid to late 50s my Grandma did at least have the money to afford a few luxuries such as pears soap, ponds cold cream and as a real splash out even some Oil of Ulan moisturiser. Mechanical exfoliation with a cloth was done, but it was a lot gentler than what it evolved into in the 40s and 50s. Considering some of the harsh environments my Grandma worked in through out her life (at one point she was a scullery maid and cook on a sheep station, and would help the blokes break in horses in her spare time) she did have surprisingly good skin. My Mother became a teenager in the mid-ish 1950s and she did fully adopt the whole "scour the top layer of your skin off and then apply the harshest toner you can find on top of that" method of skincare, which I was always somewhat horrified by growing up , especially when she wanted to do 'beauty nights", like, "nope, I'll let Grandma do a facial for me, but you stay away with whatever chemical weapon you've got in your hand."
I don't actually know anything of the beauty regimes of the women on my Dad's side of the family, because he was estranged from his birth mother fairly early on. I do know she was a brothel madam who hooked up with a local bootlegger, so I can imagine her makeup routine at least was probably a tad on the scandalous side. That would've been pre 1950s though.

I love thiissss! Vintage beauty was a hobby of mine for years and obviously many of the techniques and products are antiquated, but some are so timeless no matter how rebranded (cold cream, let me introduce you to cleansing balm, face shaping, meet contouring). Women had so much pressure for perfection because, sadly, there were fewer men to snag after the war. That expectation was pretty solid for women with few options for survival beyond marriage (broadly speaking). It's a really transparent era for seeing how beauty and politics intersect. Thanks for the video y'all!

Also baking, meet powder setting. 👀 I remember one of my grand aunts slathering on panstik on her face then dusting on Maja loose face powder heavily and let it sit for almost half an hour. She has a clean powder puff to wipe the excess off but I've also seen her shake her head several times after doing that.🤣

This reminds me of leaving the cheap motels we used to live in because my mom married a hobo when I was in high school, a whole hour earlier than I needed to, and walking to a friend's house so she could do my makeup and hair because we were both doing rockabilly style at the time. I didn't have any cool clothes, but at least my hair and makeup looked nice.

That's a story 🤔 Hobo? How this happened

    • @LakeGael
      @LakeGael ปีที่แล้ว +4

@CoffeeGirl it's definitely a long story, but the shorter version is that my mother was more concerned with dick-chasing than what was best for me or her, and she used me as a bargaining chip all the time. We got into that situation because she decided to drop our lives and relocate from her ex boyfriend's house to across the country so she could chase some guy who didn't seem like he even wanted her. He disappeared a month after we moved, she met the hobo (he was living in his van) through her friends we were living with because they're Mormon and the hobo was a friend of theirs through the church. They got married 2 weeks later, then the day after that we were living in cheap motels and that's pretty much how my 4 years of high school went. Walking around at 2am on school nights looking for another motel because we got kicked out, asking the church to pay our rent because hobo couldn't be assed to get a real job, being forced into mormonism, etc. My only real outlet was music, anime, and the few friends I had made at school.

Marilyn used vaseline because she was dry and the foundation that she used is still around called Anita Day Dew of Denmark. It was only for the stage and was very heavy. My mom, aunts, grandma, they all swore by pancake makeup. Maxfactor heavy mascara and maybelline mascara and eye pencils. Revlon had the greatest nail polish and lipsticks. Fake lashes were still only used by actresses until the early 60s. Also, many actresses chewed gum because they believed it worked the face muscles to help fight off wrinkles.

I actually recommend rolling your feet over a frozen water bottle or a tennis ball or something like that to many people. Them specifying to roll the balls of the feet also leads me to believe it is all due to wearing heels all day.

"I'm just going to stand over here by the jukebox" yes my fav line today lol
I feel like with growing up in the same era as everyone making this film they got their information from grease and cry baby lol and that's perfectly accurate and I love it :)

That’s the reason why ‘I have to go powder my nose’ was said back in the olden golden days. Women had to put foundation powder on again after a dance or something like that.

Thursday is Hair day! It's just funny to think about my Grandmother(rest her perfect soul😇) going to JcPenney's Salon every single Thursday like clockwork & only sleeping on satin or silk pillowcases and would wrap some kind of tissue around her lil white bob clip it on the sides & did that nightly until her Thursday appt at Penney's😁;; she had a routine for everything everyday!! Goodness do I miss her more than I ever imagined I could!!!!!

OMG when Robert was putting on the creampuff, the sound of that paper pad was like nails on a chalk board. My skin flaked off just from hearing how rough that was.
